Poor value for money - a meal of chicken, roast pork and veg for 2 cost close to S$40 - it may seem reasonable but for a no frills place and small portions it veers on the side of 'expensive'
The roast pork was dry and hard
The portion of chicken was average
And the rice which used to be the highlight of the meal tasted bland
We were surprised at the bill and tried to get the old guy at the counter to explain - but he was unwilling to do that -either he didn't understand what we were asking ... or he simply had a take it or leave it attitude.
Next time am going across the road where there is another chicken rice place

Since 1940, Yet Con has been serving their fragrant Hainanese Chicken rice and steamboat to the multitudes of foodies even before Singapore got her independence.
The main dish is the steam Hainanese Chicken Rice. Firstly, the rice is very fragrant and not oily. The chicken, although not presented very well, was soft, tender and juicy (unlike other places where the chicken would either be too oily or dry).
We also order a plate of Hainanese Pork Chop which was delicious. There were many Hainanese that were cooks to the homes of the British during Singapore's days as a colony. They learned many English cooking from the British and the Hainanese Pork Chop is one where the Hainanese has added their twist too. The ones were had at Yet Con were crispy and the tomato sauce not too overpowering. A right combination.
The steam boat (or hot pot) is a small cauldron of chicken broth on a small fire. With green veggies, some sea food and an order of beef to cook in. The beef was very well marinated, soft and tender. Great to go with the Chicken and Chicken Rice.
Regrettably, Yet Con's operators are in their late 70s and it would be sad to see them leave the food scene of Singapore.

I love chicken rice. I came across this place by accident as it was very near the hotel I was staying. I would say the chicken rice was above average, although the portions were a little small. Rice and soup were tasty. Decor was average, dating back to the 80's. Service was abrupt and needs improvement. Was also a little expensive for what it was.

Overall I would probably go back, but i am sure there is better chicken rice restaurants in Singapore.

When people go to Singapore, they must try the famous and popular Hainanese Chicken Rice.
This restaurant is highly recommended by the travel guides. So my friends and I decided to go there and tried it.

We ordered Hainanese Chicken Rice. And we ordered white rice to eat with the chicken.
The soup was complimentary, the taste was average. But, the chicken is really tender and soft...totally different from what we have in Hong Kong.

Below average chicken rice served with thin tasteless chilli sauce, dry chicken and served with surly customer service. Plus, the back of the house kitchen is filthy and the toilets are dangerously slippery. The bill for 2 people came to $50.80 which is pretty expensive for chicken rice.
