Mayo Inn
Ranked #199 of 317 Hotels in Singapore
Reviewed November 9, 2012

It took a while for me to find a decent and affordable place to stay since I was with family during this trip. BUT when I finally settled for Mayo Inn, I didnt have regrets at all! In fact, I'm recommending it to all my friends. The place was clean, the staff was really friendly, and the place was secure. The location was also good. There's a convenience store right outside the budget hotel so just in case you need food in the middle of the night, you can always get a quick snack. And for a no-frills hotel, there's free bottled water in the room, coffee/tea, basic toiletries, and towels!

Downside is that it is a good 10 to 15-min walk to the Bugis MTR Station. Not really that near. They also don't have any food in the hotel. Although this is understandable since it's a budget hotel. The walls of the hotel also seems to be a little bit thinner than usual. I can hear everytime the other room takes a shower.

But all in all, the downside is something we can all tolerate given the affordability of the place. The basics are there and that seems to be more important to me. So if you're looking for an affordable place to stay in expensive Singapore, then Mayo Inn is it!

Room Tip: If you want more room space, get a room that's good for 3 or 4.

If you are looking for the most economical place to stay in Singapore without sacrificing comfort, then, Mayo Inn is the best place to stay in. Prior to our trip I must have researched for several weeks and contacted numerous hotels or inns. Most of them too small or too expensive. Mayo Inn is not that glamorous but its comfortable.

The Good:
- Their family room is spacious enough (we were 4 adults, 1 child).
- Walking distance to Bugis and Little India.
- Clean room and bath room, regular changing of towels.
- Water, coffee and tea replenished every day.
- Reception (well at least most of them) were friendly. They dont impose full payment right when you arrive (anyway, the first night is paid in advance).

The Bad:
- The lift was not working when we stayed. Not a biggie for us we were in the 2nd floor, but I hate to think for those staying in the upper floors...although it can be considered exercise.
- No breakfast. There is a convinience store accross the road and near by food stalls, but it just seems to make life easier when you know you have breakfast in the morning in the hotel.
- Carpet tiling in the room can be better just for aesthetic sake.
- Staying in a room facing the road can get quite noisy in the morning.

Over-all its still a good place to stay in while in Singapore. If you are in a budget but would like to stay in a decent hotel then you should consider Mayo Inn.

the hotel was really comfortable and the price was brilliant for singapore.

The location is alright....felt safe enough seeing as it was singapore but anywhere else and i would want to get a cab to and from the front door.

Overall experience was superb.

We were three friends who stayed here in a triple room a couple of nights in late July. The room was really nice, clean and big! It was very well maintained and had really cool decorations (the bathroom was nicer than the one we had at Holiday Inn Atrium, a 4-star hotel in singapore). The only problem is that it's located right next to Jalan Besar (a very traffic intensive street) and was not that soundproofed. Had it not been for this, I'd given it a 5 out 5 straight away. Amazingly friendly front desk staff! We were staying here whilst looking fo a private apartment, and they actually helped us print out some adds that they had found and thought would interest us. I'm really sorry that I can't remember their names, but it was two girls in their mid twenties (my guess).

I would definitely recommend this place, but try to ask for a room that is quiet.

Room Tip: Ask for a room that is quiet, and if possible (I'm not sure) that does not face the Jalan Besar.

We recently stayed at the Mayo Inn, and can thoroughly recommend this little place.

Granted, it isn't perfect, but then again, it isn't the price of the Raffles!

So let's look at what's good....

Location - Well Little India is perhaps not the best part of Singapore, however the Mayo is very much on the edge of this area. The wonderful and characterful Bugis area is a very short walk, and for this, the location is a plus point. Again though - it isn't the most luxurious location, however it has a certain character you won't get elsewhere.

Cleanliness - the place is spotless!

Lots of hot water available, brilliant complementary wi-fi, flat screen cable tv, fridge and kettle with coffee provided (regrettably 3 in 1 coffee, sweetened)
The beds are very comfortable and the decor is agreeable. The reception is particularly pleasant with a water feature.

Staff - all completely charming. For us, the two younger ladies were absolute stars.

Things which could be better -

The lift needs to be up and running again. This has already been mentioned in reviews, and will probably be history soon. The stairs used for access are an obvious fireproofed escape exit, with it's concrete lining, and little consideration given for pleasing decorations - but in a way this is good because I can confirm this hotel is a safe one.

There is considerable traffic noise. This might or might not bother you, if you remember you are in a small almost boutique guesthouse, and it's in a "real" area with character, then it's maybe to be expected.

This is not the hotels fault, but sometimes a hotel going that extra mile to keep the prices reasonable (not cheap - there is a difference!), it might attract the odd guest who just wants to pass quickly through and may not be the best fellow guest.
This happened to me with some completely selfish idiots staying for one night only thankfully, but still talked loudly, shut doors noisily late at night, and woke me up by shouting down his cellphone in the early hours - but right outside my room door and on loudspeaker to boot.

In all, the Mayo I could recommend to most. It's a most charming older colonial building, but which has been modernised inside.

As a footnote, the outside might not look so charming as it could be right now, as like other buildings, there are props supporting it. This is due only because a new MRT station is being built nearby, and it might otherwise collapse or receive damage.

Dear Yorkshiresheep,

Your description of the Inn and the surroundings was spot on. At the moment we still cannot use the lift although we have complied with the requirements set by the Authority. Until we receive their letter of authorization we will not be able to use it. The other areas which you feel could be better, we will look into it. Thank you for a fair and excellent description of us.

difficult to get an hour extra checkout..not flexible to help customers or guests..

Dear alex H,
Thank you for staying at our Inn recently and also your review. As we have only 23 rooms it is difficult to accommodate requests for extension of check-out time.If there are no guests checking into that room in question that day we usually allow such requests. This to allow our housekeepers to clean the room for the next guest. However, upon checkout our guests may leave their bags with the front desk and continue with their shopping or sight-seeing and pick it up before leaving for the airport. Once again thank you for staying with us and we look forward to see you again.

We stayed for 4 nights and didn't want to pay too much knowing we would be out and about most days. Unfortunately the lift was out during the stay but knowing it was for safety reasons it didn't bother us too much. My only complaint was the staff ( well one of them in Particular). We found it very hard to get help about the area and what to do and the staff member was more interested in their mobile phone than the guests. When asking about where to go within walking distance it was a simple "just walk around". We ended up going to the closest mini mart to help us. The other staff were friendly. Overall it was a good location and clean room.

Dear Traveltripper123,

I apologize for the rude behavior you received from one of my front office staff during your stay with us. The person concerned has been dealt with and given a chance to improve herself. Despite this incident you have given us a favorable review which I appreciate very much. Thank you.
