After a week of feasting on traditional Chinese food over the Chinese New Year period, we decided it was time for something different. So we put our chopsticks away as well as the fork and spoon and decided it was time to get back to basics.

Off we went to Race Course Road in Little India, Singapore to savor the traditional fish head curry, curry vegetables, butter chicken and deep fried fish roe. After a through hand washing at the facilities there (3 sinks fully equipped with soap, hand dryers and paper towels), we dived in with our hands (actually you only use one hand to touch the food). The other is reserved for picking up your drinks, adjusting your glasses and of course scratching your..... (You get the idea)...

We had a small fish head curry which cost about $22 SGD, butter chicken for the kids (not spicy), deep fried fish roe (also not spicy), spinach with cottage cheese and a helpful of white rice (you can ask for as many helpings as you like). The meal comes with free flow of vegetables which the waiter brings around from time to time in 2 silver containers and popadums (deep fried round crackers the size of your palm, which taste great with beer - actually many things taste great with beer, but I digress).

There were many other items on the menu but since there were only 4 of us (out of which 2 were kids ages 11 & 12), what we ordered was more than enough. We also had some nice drinks like lime juice, mango lassi, plain sweet lassi (lassi is an Indian yoghurt drink which taste great - after a lassi you can have a beer).

The staff was good and friendly. They even helped us take a picture of the family without prompting. Our whole meal came up to only $75 and we definitely over ordered.

I have had Indian cuisine in a few countries. Singapore offers some of the best. Banana Leaf gives you a "down and dirty" experience of Little India. OK, so it's not really dirty and it is a few hundred yards from the main strip. It does have easy access to the Metro and offers you a delicious taste of South Asian cuisine when you are looking at a change from the Striaghts & Chinese food on offer elsewhere.

The service is as attentive as you would expect for this particular price point. The food is tasty, the toilets clean and the bill relatively small.

I'll be coming again on my next visit.

Hi,

A few point to note about this restaurant:

1) Price is reasonable, the taste is average
2) Lady at the counter where you pay your bill is so sulky and unpleasant, we are paying customer it doesn't hurt to smile and say thank you.
3) There are better places to eat other then this such as Briyani Stalls at beer garden (cheaper) and Muthu's, slightly more expensive but better service and taste.
4) We use to go to Apolo very often, till a friend recommended us to other option around that area, after experiencing other options we will not be going back to Apolo for a very very long time, main reason is being the poor customer service they give.
5) We always don't use the wet towel but it will be charged in the bill, then each time we have to ask them to remove it from the price, ridiculous to charge for a 30 cent item, might itself just include in the food price and give it for free, don't have to be so cheap skate.
6) Ambience quite dull, nicer to sit on the walkway outside but very hard to get service.

Thanks

well worth a visit to little india if you are visting Singapore. So easy to get to on the undergrond...just a few hundred yards from the station. People recommended this restaurant when we were chatting in the lounge at Heathrow and we were not disappointed, excellent plentiful food, great quality at a good price.

The service was indifferent if not hostile. Without being told we were charged 30 cents for a packaged wet towel and 20 cents for tap water. Were surprised the silverware didn't carry a rental charge. The chicken korma sauce actually was quite good, but the amount of chicken in it negligible (same with the amount of lamb in the lamb biryani). The bill for two was high ($35) considering we ordered no drinks except the house tap water.

Personally, I don't care for the banana leaf gimmick. It's a bit like eating off a bath mat.
