“Awful, stale, left-over food served by an unhelpful waiter!”
1 of 5 bubbles Reviewed October 27, 2012

I (attempted) to dine at this restaurant on 27th October 6.38 pm. When I requested a vegetarian thali (meal) I was told by the waiter "We don't have it"! Never heard of an indian restaurant that cannot serve a standard vegetarian meal with rice/roti/naan and sabji (vegetables)! I finally scanned the menu and ordered vegetable biryani, salad and a soft drink.

When the food arrived, the biryani was stale (had been cooked a day earlier or in the morning) and tasted like left over food that was reheated. I refused to eat it and walked up to the counter to pay for the meal.

The woman at the counter refused to acknowledge it was the restaurant's mistake. Did not bother to apologize and just said "We will cook and serve it fresh". I left after paying for the drink.

This restaurant has been made popular by caucasian tourists and local chinese who would not know the difference between fragrant, well seasoned spicy indian food versus the hot chilli masala indian food. They just lap up the rich hot masala that is slathered in liberal amounts into everything - crabs, lobsters, fish, chicken...

“Apart from the Banana Leaf, it is just passable!”
3 of 5 bubbles Reviewed October 21, 2012

If you are not very particular about the cuisine that you are looking for, this restaurant is as good as any other. If you are looking for genuine North Indian food, this is surely not the place. Generally, it serves decent food...more like a counterpart of the American Diner. I came across Sankranti, located on Syed Alvi Road, near Mustafa, Serangoon Road. This place serves genuine Andhra Cuisine. Banana Leaf in general, serves South Indian Food.... a mixture of Karnataka, Chennai & Kerala cuisine.

“Best Fish Head Curry...”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed October 21, 2012

Basic looking restaurant with banana leaf 'plates', always very busy and bustling. I have eaten here on many occasions and never been disappointed, the food is delicious and reasonably priced. The highlight would have to be their Fish Head Curry, it is absolutely delicious and a great meal to share.

“Excellent Fish Head Curry !”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed October 19, 2012

We tried the much hyped Fish head curry in Singapore at this restaurant ... well it looks more like a canteen. The south indian food , fish head curry, chicken masala are really nice and worth a try but not the northern indian ...it has too much color...and similar tastes, since we know how good north indian food can be the one is just average. It is too crowded so better make reservations.

Wish it had a better ambience, and northern indian food and improved from the canteen look !

“Good as ever!!”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed October 19, 2012

We always have a meal here when we are visiting Singapore. The food is consistently good and we love the banana leaf 'plates'.

Have to say, it was much more charming when it was a basic food hall and you lined up and got a dollop of each of your choices, rather than seated ordering as it is now. However, the food never fails to please and the service is cheery and well paced. It is pricer than eating in the food halls in Chinatown, but still worth it.

We will continue to eat here when we are in town for sure.
