Make sure you go on a Thursday night food walk! Hostel guests only pay $30 Singapore dollars ($24 usd) and you get to try about 30 different dishes and get a thorough guided lesson from the owner, Tony, about what makes Singapore unique. As for the actual hostel, we stayed in the private room - 3 of us fit very comfortably. It does share a bathroom with a female dorm room. The commons area is cozy and chock full of information about Singapore. Light breakfast and coffee is free and there is a pool table.

Warm welcome, great vibe, -no so clean kitchen- but overall , good choice to stay when backpacking through Singapore C: Tip: If going in a group it's a good idea to book a private room, it usually has a toilet and shower within

I have stayed there twice already and will come back! My last stay was for a month from Oct to Nov 2013. Uncle Tong and Tony are the best and make the hostel feel so homey and welcoming! There is a ton of food within a 5 minute walk from the hostel from restaurants serving chili crab to all kinds of hawker stands. Also the hostel offers a free gym just 2 blocks away. The common room is cozy and great for meeting people. They also sell beer and snacks at the front desk. Oh, and you must do the evening food walk, it is great food and you learn alot about Singaporean history and culture! I recommend not eating a heavy lunch the day of the tour! Can't wait to stay again!

Room tip: The eight bed rooms are a little quieter.

Went on 15 Nov, stayed for a night in the private double room. Very spacious with ants as companions and was bitten by one as I napped. The air con is incredibly loud; like some grasscutter just beside me working on his machine. Had to turn it off to actually get some rest. There are three openable windows which is good. Looks over the first floor's roof and air con machine/vents. When it rains it is really loud, not the nice kind you get to induce a good sleep.

The light switches are strangely on the outside of the room, lights are huge fluorescent tubes. The mattress is quite worn and is not thick anymore, just sinks down. The pillow is ok, some have yellow stains on it. The blanket is a thin rough excuse, sad case.

There's a limited number of toilet/shower rooms. Only one on the floor I was on. Did not clash with anyone's bath time though. The door is hard to lock; didn't actually know you could lock it till you succeeded by accident.

Plenty of food outside, nightlife is full of cigs and hookers and weird men staring. Any woman or girl should be on her guard.

The staff was friendly though. Polite smiles can be seen. Would be quite a blast staying if the air con is not a killer to the ears.

We didn't stay at the hostel but we met there to do the food tour one Thursday night. The hostel common room looked very welcoming, and this is where Tony (our host) and the rest of the tour group met and got to know each other. After we broke the ice, we (about 12 of us) went off on our food adventure!
Tony arranges all the best delicacies and dishes to be served up and enjoyed at various points as you walk around the Joo Chiat and Katong districts. Any food lover will appreciate the rare chance to taste so many different foods, many of them quite unique to Singapore.
Just as enjoyable is Tony's insightful tour - he'll give you a whole wealth of facts as well as his personal critique on the historic area and the wider country, and Singaporean life. Ask him anything - he's a fountain of knowledge and loves to chat. We left the tour around midnight - but it was still going strong! It's a great way to enjoy the ambience of the area too, alongside "real" Singaporeans away from the usual tourist traps. Not to be missed!
PS - If you have dietary restrictions, don't worry - just let them know in advance!
