Hotel for low budget traveler

2.0 of 5 bubblesReviewed Aug 7, 2011
The room is extremely small. Never seen such kind of room before.

The location is great. MRT station can be reached in 5 minutes walking.

The staffs were not friendly at all. This was the most annoying part for me staying in this hotel.

Summary: if you are traveling on low budget and expecting to sleep only, then go for this hotel. Basically this is not a hotel but rather a hostel.

We have terrible experience with the most careless and ruse staff we have meet since long time.
Given the difficult situation (we cheched 6 hotels in the nearzone, with no room available) we had to accept to check in at 11PM (really!!) and we had to pay same price than usual.
The cost is average, but cleanliness is well below, room are really small but this is uual in Singapore

Hotel 81, China town is one of my favourite budget hotels in Singapore. It is very conveniently located in almost the centre of Singapore and all taxi drivers know it. It is also close to the station China Town.
Economically priced, the hotel is easy to book over the net, (generally through agoda.com) and one has a pleasant experience doing so without any hiccups or unpleasant surprises. The check in is straight forward with staff who are quite friendly and straight.
It is a multi storied corner building with a lift. The ground floor is numbered 1 as all other buildings in Singapore.
The rooms are small and a bit cramped. There is not much place around the bed and it does get a little uncomfortable if one is used to walking around a bed while unpacking or packing. However they are quite well equipped with shower, wash basin, LCD TV, kettle for coffee and tea etc. They are quite clean and well maintained. However, once I did have a leaking wash basin. The rooms are air-conditioned which is a requirement in a hot place like Singapore no matter what time of the year it is. One should always request for an outside room while checking in as they are a bit bigger than the inside ones. The windows are permanently locked so it is not possible to enjoy fresh air.
There is a lot of interesting happenings around the hotel. Shopping areas, food streets, china snacks etc are very close to the hotel and easy to find after a little exploration.

We spent four nights there in the beginning of April… and it’s not a horrible place, like you may think from some of the previous reviews… It’s just very basic – room is small and most space is taken by the bed, but the bed is clean and was made every day. And yes, the shower room is tiny and everything inside gets wet when you take a shower.

It’s just very overpriced for such a basic room, but I guess it’s no surprise in Singapore… so don’t expect too much when you decide to stay there and thus you won’t get disappointed

I stayed in this hotel for 1 night before my transit flight
1/ You can find lots of restaurant and hawker center nearby the hotel, between 2 or 15 minutes walk
2/ Room size is quite small comparing to my previous booking in hotel 81 bugis
3/ Airport shuttle cannot provide drop you off at the main entrance of the hotel, you need to have 1 minute walk instead. Similar arrangement for pick up service
4/ Other service is in average as per hotel 81 standard

It's a budget hotel but the rate is not low. There should be better choice if you pay the same rate. Yes the location is good. MRT station is just 1 minute away. There is wide range of choice for dining or shopping. But I really cannot stand the size of the room and there are ants and little flying objects in my room. Soundproof is not done well and you can hear people walking and talking outside. I won't recommend this hotel unless you feel that location is your utmost concern.
