“Very cheap hotel in a good Geylang area”
3 of 5 bubbles Reviewed October 3, 2012

A lot of people stay away from Geylang area hotels for a reason. This one is an exception though. There are no "naughty" places around this hotel even though I noticed a few Karaoke bars with gilrs smoking outside. So, I decided to book a hotel room here and did so on Hotels.com. When I arrived at the hotel, they informed me that my booking had been moved to Fragrance Rose because of unavailability at this hotel. I protested because my business was near to Joo Chiat Road and I wanted to stay only in that hotel. Floy was kind enough to accommodate me in a nice room (don't know how). She made sure that I had a good stay and everything was taken care of.

My only complaints would be about the missing shower curtains and the bad quality of bedding. Other than that, I had a good stay at Fragrance, Joo Chiat Road. At no point, I felt threatened or disturbed by the naughtiness that Geylang is famous for!

We originally booked two nights but got there a day earlier so we added on another night, but there were no rooms available matching what we had booked so we got a free upgrade for all three nights, bonus.
Rooms were ok size, clean and comfortable, however there was a lot of noise made by other guest at all times of the day and night! Staff were very friendly and helpful, you could leave your baggage. A bit of a walk to the closest MRT stop, but there were lots of restaurants on the same road of the hotel.

Room Tip: Do not get a room near the lift!

Ay, Singapore - your hotels are ridiculously over-priced!

This place is considered "East Coast", which is a little misleading since it's actually on the south coast, in the direction of the airport (which is east, btw.) As such it kind of gets lumped into airport hotels and has a remote-ish sounding location.

It's not. This area is lively, full of nightlife, restaurants, a giant bazaar, etc. It is surrounded by a residential area. Very nice area to stay.

I'm not that familiar with transport in the area but there are several main boulevards running about so there are plenty of buses and taxis. I'm not sure where the nearest MRT (subway/metro) station is but surely can't be too far.

The area is populated by a lot of recent immigrants from Vietnam, Indonesia, etc., mixed in with a pretty strong muslim influence. That leads to a lot of diversity in food choices and a worldly charm with the old buildings and such.

Now the hotel, hmm. It's a giant thing. There are very few services but the rooms are clean. It was, in fact, one of the biggest rooms I've stayed in for this category. It's not a big room but it's not a closet either.

The front desk is very helpful with whatever you might need.

The room had the barest of essentials. Ancient tv worked but it was beat up and a bit fuzzy. No cable or satellite tv - just over-the-air. No big deal but the set made the room look worn out - better just remove the tv altogether.

You get two cups (yes cups) of water and that's it. Maybe a coffee maker but I'm not a drinker so I don't remember.

The bed was - to be nice - functional. The mattress is covered in some sort of thick vinyl so the sheets slip and slide and it can be sweaty. Not very nice.

The bath was sizable but unappealing. The entire room showers, including the toilet, etc. Not a big deal, but if you have to "go" in the middle of the night, you're going to step in cold water on the floor and the entire room is tiled so it's pretty cold.

The bathroom ceiling had large patches of black mold/rot.

The a/c will be off when you leave as the key card makes the room "start up". So you get back and it's hot and yucky.

Since the place is tiled, it can be loud if your neighbors are banging doors or some such. Get a room at the far, far back.

So why am I giving this sort-of sub-par hotel a "very good"? Well, it was $47 Singapore (USD 36). I got more than $35 worth of hotel.. At that price, it's easily half of what the same room would cost elsewhere in Singapore.

If not for the price, it would be a poor choice as there are many hotels around $100 Singapore with similar facilities and slightly more modern.

Room Tip: Get one at the far back.

Moderate hotel and do not dream of car park (even if the ads say so). You can feel the vietnam surroundings. One thing that i would never forget was the receptionist attitude. She treated me as if i want to stay there for free! This hotel is not welcoming you!

Not really happy with our stay here just a few weeks ago. The hotel lacks a few things like bath mat, hot water, iron, fridge. Most 2 or 3 star hotels would have these. The shower was slippery so you have to be careful. There was no shower curtain so the bathroom would all be wet everywhere. The hotel does not supply bath mats and shower curtains. There was no hot water , fortunately it was summer. Most of all the staff male who worked the night to early morning shift was very unhelpful.

The room was very small.
