I've dined here twice and in both instances, it was to celebrate a birthday. This place is good for those kind of occasions, and not really for a date because it is crowded and can get a bit noisy. The food is good, but knowing that Singapore has a lot of choices for steamboat (especially local shops which have been operating for decades), I couldn't really say that this is the best of the bunch. It would be a better option if you were bringing guests and introducing them to steamboat for the first time. Or as we have done, it's a good option for special occasions. A word of caution though, this is a popular place and it is best to book a table at least 3weeks in advance, especially of you plan to go for weekend dinner. There is a small area in the lobby where the kids can play board games and ladies can get an express manicure while waiting. But if you do plan on queuing, give yourself 1.5-2hrs of waiting time. For budget considerations, allot an average of S$50 per pax, unless you would only be ordering vegetarian choices the whole time, which is not the best way to have steamboat because the meats are fresh and it's a joy cooking them in ma la stock and having to compete with your friends in fishing them out of the soup.(okay, I guess that is just for childish people like us). You should try HDL at least once for you to judge yourself if this is all worth the hype. My friends and I enjoy going here but maybe twice or thrice a year is just enough for us. It's not something we would love to come back for more frequently than that.
