“Steamboat with great service”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed August 30, 2013 via mobile

I been there twice in August 2013. The second time I was there the service level dropped slightly but it was way busier the second time. Though both are weekdays visit.

During your queue, they will seat you and offer fruits, snacks and drinks. When you are seated they will provide an apron for your usage.

It's an ala carte steamboat so you can order when you wish to eat. Dessert and fruits are free flow.

“Love it!”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed August 29, 2013 via mobile

I can't describe how much I enjoy this restaurants! I've been in Haodilao in Beijing and Shanghai too because I know how good is the service! Lots and lots of customers of course, but while you are waiting you can get your nails done, your mobile phone cleaned or just sit and drink some tea. Then, they give you an apron to cover your clothes and gloves to eat with your hands, amazing! The first time I just placed my camera on the table and a waiter came immediately with a plastic bag to put my camera in it. About the food itself i would say it is good, pretty high quality for a hotpot but for this whole great dining experience, you dont spend that much really! To me is definetely worth the money and the waiting! If you have kids, ask for the hand made pasta, it would be a entertaining life performance for everybody!

“Fiery Deliciousness, Great Service”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed August 26, 2013

I’d heard a lot about the hot pot and looked forward to trying this. I was not disappointed to say the least!

Location
Hai Di Lao is located on Clarke Quay, with a view of the water outside and sprawling malls beyond the waterway.

Food & Drink
The hotpot was delicious. The aromatic simmering broth is not too spicy for those who have a good tolerance of spice with the distinct piquant flavor of Sichuan pepper and ginger. We chose to add chicken, pork, lamb, shrimp cakes, chicken dumplings, fish balls, bamboo shoot and black mushrooms to our hotpot. I recommend plenty of those crunchy black mushrooms – they imbibe the savory broth and burst with flavor with each chew.

You have a choice of broths and I’d recommend you choose depending on your tolerance and hankering for spice. There is even an option of choosing a “half and half” – a portion of two broths.

There was a choice of two beverages (unlimited at $3-$5 per person) to go with the meal. I opted for a plum juice. It was very similar in flavor to Roselle Flower juice and worked like a charm to cut the spice completely each time I felt my tongue tingle with the chili-peppery pungency of the hotpot broth.

You can choose to make your own dipping sauces from the do-it-yourself counter with an array of spices and sauces. But you don’t really need dipping sauces – the flavorful broth works well enough on its own.

Soy custard is served as dessert which, although quite bland, helps to soothe your system after that fiery meal.

Service & Staff
The staff was polite, efficient and pleasant, showing us how to work the temperature of the hotpot, keeping an eye on it to see that it didn't get too hot, and ensuring that my glass of plum juice was always full.

Ambiance
The restaurant, located on the first floor, is not very airy or spacious. You’re hit with the not-unpleasant scent of piquant pepper as soon as you walk in. Not much attention has been paid to the restaurant’s décor, but with the quality of food being served here, who really cares? Take a table by the few windows as these are brighter and airier.

Value For Money
I haven’t been able to compare this restaurant with other hotpot restaurants in the city, but, from what I’ve heard, it is more expensive (none of the hotpot items are ‘unlimited’ unlike other places). However, given their location on Clarke Quay, no doubt they have steep overheads to cover.

Tips For Diners
Make a reservation. Take a table by the window if you prefer a brighter ambiance. Not for those with weak stomachs.

Overall Impression
A delicious fiery meal and memorable dining experience. I would definitely go back here.

“Best of the Best”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed August 10, 2013

I visited this restaurant at least once a month. The service was extremely good, while waiting for our seats, we can do FOC manicure at the manicure counter at the entrance area. After seated, the waiter served us immediately. We did needed to order the foods through the Ipad and within short period, the foods were served. The waiter were always standby the area thus no long waiting time for the order. The foods were very fresh, good quality, the ambiance was good too. To avoid disappointment, it advisable to make appointment in advance.

“Great service but expensive”
3 of 5 bubbles Reviewed July 28, 2013

The restaurant was busy, but there was an area to sit with snacks to eat whilst waiting. The restaurant is expensive compared to hot pot restaurants in China Town. The cooking soup costs $16, and then each vegetable, meat or fish you want to cook costs $6-$20. Free flow soft drinks cost a further $4 and sauces another $4. Despite the cost the restaurant was busy and noisy.
