“Great hostel”
Reviewed September 14, 2013

Location is nice: lots of restaurants around. Nearest MRT station around 10 min away. The 6 bed dorm was clean. Showers worked well. Wifi-connection worked also pretty well. The staff is really polite and friendly. They have a full-day breakfast included in the price, which is really convenient! No need to rush up before 10am for breakfast! :)

I would stay here again!

The location was fantastic, great shopping, eating and drinking all within immediate walking distance. The MRT is, realistically, about a 10-15 min walk away, as is the nearest ATM. The cafe downstairs is cute and has slow, but friendly, service and realistic prices ($4 slice of pizza, $8 craft beers, $5-6 sandwiches). So it's a good option if you don't feel like wandering far for a meal.

I stayed in the female 12 bed dorm. While so many beds in one room was not ideal, it was the only one available with a window. The other all female, 8 bed dorm, slightly resembled a dark cupboard. The beds have their own lockers, lights and power sockets. The bunk beds were cute, but not at all sturdy. They shook when someone moved to the higher bunk, they shook when either person shifted in their sleep, they shook when either person sat up, etc. An easy addition to this style of bunks would be curtains, so as to block out unwanted light and provide some privacy when necessary. Maybe something for them to consider. Also, while the two air conditioning units were great, the second flooded the room for an entire week. It made it difficult to store luggage, a bit unsanitary and the fact it took them so long to organise a technician really didn't reflect well on them.

The bathrooms had fast hot water. They are combined toilet/showers, constantly wet and about the same size as a public toilet cubicle. No aircon in this part of the building. Only 2/3 had a mirror.

The rooftop bar and lounge were nice, if a bit dirty and run down. It feels like they attempted to do the whole eclectic vintage thing but fell a bit short. Instead of looking old, but with character and charm, it was a bit more like someone just donated a bunch of their old furniture that was on the verge of falling apart. E.g. the flaking door table. Maybe sand it back and varnish it?

The kitchen was limited, with possibly the tiniest fridge I have ever seen. Like, calling it a bar fridge would be generous. I am really not sure what you could fit in there. The breakfast was great but occasionally people would forget to stock it.

As for being a 'social hostel', while the rooftop bar does allow for socialising, it just isn't on par with other, more established hostels, who frequently organise fun/cheap/free things to do around the city with other travellers. The most this hostel offered in the week I was there was a pub crawl hosted by an external company that cost $25.

I know this sounds like a lot of negatives, but I did enjoy my stay here and the people here were warm and lovely. It's just that this hostel has so much potential, with its great cafe and location. It just fell frustratingly short of the mark. That said, it looks superior to a lot of other Singaporean hostels, and the price was very reasonable.

Room Tip: Try to get a bed away from the door.

Hi biancayh thanks for the review, we are glad that overall you enjoyed your stay and we welcome you to return on your next visit to Singapore to enjoy some of the changes we have made! We have made a big effort on the rooftop with some new tables, a swing seat and a bit of a redesign. We are still a new hostel and so we are always interested in what improvements our guests think we can implement to further enhance their visits.

Cheers,
Basirah

I stayed here with a friend on a quick trip through Singapore. The location is very handy for the subway (which goes straight to the airport) and there are plenty of restaurants and bars in the adjacent streets... the 12 bed dorm is an L shaped room meaning it feels more like 2 sets of 6 bed dorms. There is also a lovely rooftop which we enjoyed breakfast in the mornings and drinks in the evenings... Throughout of 3 night stay there were 2really nice and helpful girls on reception who would give us advice on where to go and chat about our plans for the day! The oy minor downside was there are 3 toilets/showers on the ladies floor meaning there is often a wait... This is a great little hostel an I would stAy there again!

Room Tip: We stayed in the cheapest 12 bed female dorm and the shape of the room made it feel.more like 2 sets...

Nice location in Arab street which has lots of chic cafe and shops. I stayed in 8 bed female dorm, the bed and quilt were comfortable, there are 3 toilets with showers. Shampoo, irons and hair dryer are provided. I liked that the breakfast is 24 hour but best to be there when stuff are re-filled. However, my friends stayed in 12 bed female dorm which has leaking air-con. The water was dripping on the floor and it doesn't seem to be fixed although staff was saying they will get it done asap.
Pros: Free 24 hour breakfast, nice rooftop area, good location, and signs to tell people to be considerate. Also there is a nice cafe called "Workingt title" below. It's actually the best part of this place in my opinion.
Cons: Not suitable for people who has problems with stairs and sharing small space with others. Floors need sweeping a bit and curtain for the bed would really be helpful at night as some guest can be a bit considerate despite the signs everywhere in the hotel to turn off lights after 10 PM.

Room Tip: Female only dorms are on 3rd floor and it has double security. One for entering the room and the bat...

Hey Chantinee B,

Thanks for your time in dropping us a review!

We sincerely apologise for the leakage in the room and the delay it took to get it fixed. There was some communication breakdown between us and the technician resulting in the delay :(
But it's all good now, finally :)

We will inform our housekeepers to step up on the cleanliness of the room. It is, anyway, our priority to keep it spick and span at all times for the comfort of all guests.

Thanks again for the review and we hope the next time you are here, you will have a much pleasant stay :)

Cheers,
Basirah

Shophouse was the first hostel experience for me. I was staying in 12 bed ladies dorm. I got the upper bunk bed closest to the door. The bed was clean and provided with pillow and blanket and it has its own power socket, small dispenser/bucket and 1 hanger. I also get a locker, just enough to store my bag and valuables. The room was fully booked at that time but luckily i took the ear plug eventhough it not much of a help againts my roommate's noises. There are 3 toilets/bathroom with shampoo/shower gel dispenser. The cleaning lady came every morning so the toilet is pretty clean. You can't feel the AC in a hot day or when everyone is in the room, so a little improvement is needed.
Breakfast is available all day (cereal, bread, coffee, tea) and every guests must clean their own utensils (just like what you do at home).
The rooftop area is great, nice view, you can have your breakfast while watching the activity on the nearby street and shophouses. Also they have public computers, TV and books to keep you entertained. All floors have wifi and they work fine.
Location not that close to MRT, but still in walking distance. And there are food court nearby (around 10minutes walk): Golden Mile.
Overall good hostel, will consider staying here again if I visit Singapore.

Room Tip: Get a bed farther from the door and closer to the AC. Always grab the earplug from the front desk to...

Hey Priscilla167,

Thanks for your time in dropping us a review!

Hope Shophouse has given you a great first-time experience of being in a hostel!

We will work on the air-con bit as it can be pretty hard getting every guest to remember to close the door behind them so as to retain the cool air in the room :)

We hope this isn't the last time you'll choose to stay in a hostel when you travel :)

Cheers,
Basirah

This place is seriously awesome! It is located just about 7 mins away from Bugis MRT. Considering the location, the price is really worth every penny. They provide all-day free breakfast (bread and cereal) and drinks (coffee & tea). They also have iMacs, playstation, board games and books so you won't get bored. The rooftop is a nice place to see the surrounding area of North Bridge Road. The room, bed and all washrooms are clean and tidy. You have to pay a refundable $10 deposit for the access card and locker key. Book directly from their website and you save $2.
