We bought a 2-day package (for 2 people) with Hippo Tours which allowed us to use any of their 5 tours over 2 days which only cost us $12 more than the one day ($27) tour. (SGD$78).

We decided to do the Trolley Tour first and the City Hop-on Hop-off later then the following day the Heritage Tour and the Night Riverboat tour.

We hopped on the “Trolley” tour which had live commentary at 10am and as we were the only ones on it we got our own “personal tour guide”. The tour guide was chatty and pleasant and very informative.

The City & Heritage Tours are recorded commentaries and go in different directions and although some places are duplicated in the tours we personally didn't mind. The tours are via double-decker buses with air-conditioning below or up on the top deck was open air and some under-cover seats.

As we had a 2-day bus pass we decided to use the 6pm (last bus for the day) to take us over to the Casino rather than paying for a taxi - bit cheeky, but why not! :)

For the "River Cruise" we caught the last yellow City bus tour and hopped off at Clarke Quay where the River Cruise tour begins. We caught the 6.45pm Hippo River Cruise which took us up and down the river – a 45min cruise in total - and saw some of Singapore’s highlights, eg. Merloin, Fullerton Hotel, Marina Bay Sands Hotel etc - the harbour was really pretty at sunset.

Tip: The river cruise does stop at a few places where you can get off, but make sure you tell them beforehand otherwise they will not stop automatically.

The Hop-on Hop-off Hippo tour is is one of the best ways to see Singapore. We found that the buses arrived frequently and there was room for us to hop on board each time.

We always try to get on a hop on hop off bus wherever we go as its a bit naff but also good to get bearings. We went on the heritage and city buses but didn't bother with the purple one as it seemed to cover most of the same leg as one of those that we had done already.

The HiPPO hop on - hop off bus involves 3 routes around the city and the pass includes a short river cruise (take it) at one of the stops. You receive a good map to follow along, so the stops are self explanatory. All bus stops in the city have a number that serves as a code, so you can also "reverse engineer" your tour map, which has the listing of codes.

Be aware that the main ticket office at the Suntec City Mall has two problems.

First, there is a sign for a queue, but the desk where you purchase the pass is across a passage to an adjacent door, so people arriving keep waking up to the desk ahead of the line; solution: post one of your party by the desk to direct people to the queue and be firm. Queue promptly on arrival.

Second, although busses start running at 9 a.m., the ticket counter inexplicably does not open until 9:30! So you may be wasting some time on your first day, if you arrive earlier. We were able to persuade them to open 10-15 minutes early, but it was still a hassle. If you get a paper receipt paying for your pass online, you are supposed to be able to hand it to the driver on the bus, but we heard there were some problems with this approach. Plan your schedule ahead appropriately.

All that said, this was a convenient way to see some of the Singapore sights. Tip: Singapore is hot and sunny!! Dress appropriately and bring water and a hat for shade. Then, enjoy!

The tour narration was fine and the routes are good, but the customer service was poor and the quality of the buses was concerning. I took three different buses with them.

Here's what needs to be improved:
1. Communication: 95% of the tourists were english-speakers. There should be a fluent English-speaker guide/helper on the bus to assist passengers with questions. There are bus drivers, but they didn't speak/understand English, and they should be focused on driving, not answering questions.

2. Safety: It was raining and the bus filled with rainwater. The driver had to stop to drain it. Not very safe. They should have buses that don't fill up with rainwater.

3. Viewing Sites: The bottom level of the doubledecker bus had windows that were covered with designs/ads for their company. The designs/ads should be removed from the windows so tourists can easily and clearly see the views.

4. Sentosa: I do not recommend the Sentosa bus. It doesn't take you around Sentosa island. It's just a bus to/from Resort World. This needs to be made clearer on the advertisements. (It would be great if it was a tour of sentosa island, but you only see the ResortWorld garage).

5. Feedback: If the buses had helpers/guides to assist, the company would receive ongoing feedback and could improve.

I bought the 48 hour pass online which gave me a free boat tour, so that's something to consider as the boat would have been $18 on its own.

There are three routes that go all over the city. Worth the money and staff were helpful.

My only issue was that the buses were often off schedule due to traffic, so sometimes I waited for a bus for quite a while.

Tip for the organizers would be to provide a bit more information about what can be done at each stop. For example, I got off a Little India and found myself just standing on a corner not knowing where to go or what was to be seen there. This was a bit of a let down as I don't think I saw everything that was to be seen there. More information about the stops would help a lot.
