Attraction details
Owner description: At the School of Hard Knocks located at Royal Selangor’s Clarke Quay flagship store, participants will learn how an enterprising teenager from China practised his craft, laying the foundation of what has become Royal Selangor. A fun-filled 30 – 45 mins session using just a few simple tools (hammer, wooden mould, scraper), participants will make a pewter dish personalised with their initials or whatever message that they wish to engrave onto the dish.Step by step, our experienced pewtersmith will guide them through the simple processes of forming, scraping, polishing and packing. The finished dish is to keep, along with an apron to complete the memento. A personalised certificate will be presented to the participants to attest to their newfound skills. The School of Hard Knocks is conducted in groups of 2 to 30 people per session. It is essential to make reservations for the hour-long fun-filled workshop to avoid disappointment.

“Great Fun For All The Family”
Reviewed October 18, 2013 via mobile

Having just arrived in Kuala Lumpur to live, we have been taking in all the tourist attractions when we can.
Today we visited the Royal Selangor pewter factory and visitor centre in the North West of the city.
We called ahead and booked both the "Foundry" and "School Of Hard Knocks" tours at the visitor centre.
Essentially, the "hard knock" is a chance to mould a pewter bowl with your own hands and mallet. Our two teenagers (15 & 13) really enjoyed the tour and gave then understanding on how the pewter was formed years ago. Upon completion, you get your bowl, and a lovely certificate to take home! Very good value for £12 per head.
We then did the "foundry" tour where you get to actually make things with molten pewter. There are moulds and you receive instructions on how to make necklace, trinkets, and the like. This lasted a whole hour and again was so much fun. You are allowed to take one item you have made which is included in the cost of £30 per head.
The visitor tour is pretty good, however there were parts of the centre being refurbished and not accessible.
There is also a cafe at the centre which provided good quality food at reasonable prices.
Also, the factory shop has some unbelievable pieces for sale.

Cannot recommend is tour highly enough. Defiantly want to do the tour and the additional "school" and "foundry" tours.

Five stars!

“A bashing good time”
Reviewed October 27, 2012

I love tinkering and this was one of the best things I did on this trip, for about $30 each you get to make your bowl out of pewter and you get to keep the apron you wore during the making. Had a good laugh worth doing
