Owner description: Singapore City Gallery is a great starting point to get to know the city for free. Located beside the Maxwell food centre in the historic district of Chinatown, this 3 storey visitor centre goes beneath the skin of the city to understand how the city came to be with its memorable buildings, historic districts and walkable street. Design your own city through a dynamic 8-player game. The main draw is an enormous model replica of the City Centre with uncannily accurate miniatures of building, giving you bird's eye view of the streetscapes of Singapore.

“Understanding the urban landscape and planning”

Free entry to get a "bird's eye view" of the city (in model form) and to understand the rationale for the current layout and future plans.

“Explains a lot!”
Reviewed January 27, 2012

I found this after visiting the Design Museum down the road and being thoroughly disappointed and $8 poorer. The City Gallery offers an excellent, and interactive, account of how and why Singapore looks like it does, and where it is headed in the future. The interactive nature of the displays is particularly thought provoking. Whilst I was there, there was also a display of design award winners which I found infinitely more insightful than the neighbouring design museum. For $0 it's got to be worth a trip!

“Free and informative”

Nice little stop on your tour around Marina Bay. This place tells you everything about the history of Singapore and has a great miniature display of the city center.

It might be interesting to look at those models but I personally found it no so interesting. However if you are into architecture and urban planning it might be good to pay a visit.

“Dynamic and interactive display of development of modern Singapore”
Reviewed December 29, 2011

The name doesn't really describe this well - it is in fact a large and impressive display of the planning issues of modern Singapore done by the Urban Redevelopment Authority. It's free and is located in their office building which is in the Chinatown area.

There is a very large model of Singapore and every hour there is a short sound and light display which highlights various parts of the island. There are lots of modern interactive displays of various things, such as how, because of the limited land space, they have reclaimed land from the sea and also built down below the ground. Good displays too about how they are attempting to preserve heritage buildings and streets.

It's fun and interesting and educational. Suggest spending about an hour there.
