Let's get the logistics out of the way first. Lots of insect repellent and sun block needed, especially for young children.

Sungei Buloh is a great place to surround yourself with nature and an abundant population of the avian type that visit this pristine wetlands in Singapore as part of their migration schedule through the year apparently. Professional bird-watchers please forgive me, I am but a casual visitor.
That said, I have to share some incredible experiences I believe would make a significant impact on those with children. Even at my age, most of what I've seen of wild animals has been at the zoo. But here at the wetlands, I've had my NatGeo moments with my children. It was here where m

We have been several times and were very lucky the first time seeing massive monitor lizards ambling just on the path in front of us. We come back here because it is a great place to "air" the children and ourselves while living in Singapore. Little coffee shop is good for a snack. Great to observe wildlife.

We have been to Sungei Buloh many time since 2003, It's nature trails through mangroves and tidal wetlands are good, and during bird migrations in Spring and Autumn can be spectacular. Lots of Water Monitors everywhere - we saw at least 12, some very large - 2m+). Plenty of birds and squirrels, mud skippers and other fish and communing with nature. Walking all the trails adds up to just over 12kms but there are good maps and visitors can do as much or as little as they want.

Visitors need a certain amount of confidence in local public transport as the only access is by 925 bus from Kranji MRT station, followed by a 1.5km walk along a busy road (there is no pathway just a grass verge). Taxis are not really an alternative. But the MRT/bus is fine - pity though that the Sunday servcie to Sungei Buloh cannot be extended to other days.

Take a picnic as the cafe is closed. Soft drinks and water are available.

Great place to take children to wonder around with monitor lizard roaming the land occasionally and plenty in the water. Small cafe which could be better. Very hot and humid and wear some mossy repellant when visit.

Sungei Buloh Wetland Reserve is under the jurisdiction of NParks, Singapore. This sprawling mangrove swamp is full of monitor lizards (Varanus salvator) and occasionally you can spot a few crocodiles. First opened by Prime Minister Goh Chok Tong, this public park is a great attraction for joggers and those who love nature. There is also a tall look-out tower where you can see migratory birds if you bring along your binoculars. You can see my video on You Tube under the title "The Malayan water monitor of Sungei Buloh, Singapore" by author hengcc. You can also see the water hen which appears near the water edge if you do not disturb this wading bird.
