“Beautiful old building”
Reviewed December 3, 2013 via mobile

Beautiful old building in the centre of Singapore. The first Christian church in Sing, built in 1835, a great place to see- white church building, nice garden, history and religion mixed together in one location. Some nice photos on the walls as well, like the Armenian community of Singapore of 1917. Do not miss!!

ArmenianChurchSG, Manager at Armenian Church, responded to this review, December 21, 2013
Dear Sir, Madam -
Thank you for your interest in Singapore's oldest standing Church, built in 1835 and consecrated in 1836.

The Church is a National Monument and is in fact open every day (including Sundays & Public Holidays) from 9am to 6pm. All members of the public are welcome to visit the Church and the grounds during opening hours.

Please note that the Armenian Church was built by and is currently maintained by the Armenian Community in Singapore. The Armenians are a Christian Community, and not Jewish as you mention in your review.

Other famous contributions by the small Armenian Community to Singapore since the 1800s include the Raffles Hotel (built & managed by the Sarkies brothers), the Straits Times (founded by Catchik Moses) and the National Flower of Singapore, Vanda Miss Joaquim.

We look forward to welcoming you to our Church.

Thank you,
Armenian Apostolic Church of St. Gregory the Illuminator Singapore

“Serene oasis in middle of Singapore”
Reviewed July 8, 2013 via mobile

This church is the oldest church in Singapore. The Armenian people are fascinating and their trade in the old days would have brought them over to south east Asia via the straits of malacca. The church is small and has some garden grounds with old tombstones. A great place to sit and reflect on life.

“The oldest church in Singapore is the Armenian Church”
Reviewed June 18, 2013

This church called the Armenian Apostolic Church of St Gregory the Illuminator is located at Hill St. It is the oldest church built in 1835 and it was designed by an Irish architect called George D Coleman. On the lawns are shown the various statues of Christ during the prelude to His crucifixion. Behind the church is an old cemetery which dates back to the 1830s. Some of the heads of angelic statues were decapitated by falling trees. The interior of the church is still preserved and used on Sundays for services . Mr Lee Kuan Yew the former Prime Minister once paid a visit to the church. You can view my video on this church at You Tube at the website:
