Booked a room in this hotel(Jun10th,2006). Showed up on time. I was told that the room was being cleaned and it would take a few minutes to get the room ready. Checked with the reception every 15 minutes-same response - 'the room was still being cleaned'. No manager on-site. Lousy hotel. Horrible ambience. Waited for 2 hours at the reception -lost patience and left. Very terrible administrative staff.
Don't book even if it is the last place on earth. Waste of time.

I booked into Claremont Hotel because of two things--first, the rate is cheap and second, it is near an MRT station (Farrer Park Station). My companion and I were fully aware that it is a budget hotel and so we did not expect much. We were going to stay there mostly in the evenings and we intended it to be a place to rest and sleep after a long day of sight-seeing and shopping in Singapore.

I booked a triple room and we were given a room with 1 double bed and 1 single bed. I had expected it to be 2 twin beds and a fold-away mat because that was what was written in my booking confirmation. So the double bed and the single bed was a welcome surprise. The room is spacious enough for us to move around and it uses a key-card lock. It has a big window that open up to a vacant lawn space at the back of the hotel. We had unobstructed views of other buildings from afar. Apart from the usual small fridge and TV that comes with almost every hotel room, there are also an electric kettle, mugs, glasses, spoons, tea, coffee, and sugar sachets. The beds are just the right size for us (we are about 5 feet 4 inches tall) and so for anyone taller, I can imagine some difficulties in adjusting to the length of the beds. The aircon takes a little while to cool the room, maybe 20 to 30 minutes. The aircon vents have rusts and need cleaning.

There is a lingering but tolerable musky odor in the bathroom. Once you have showered and used some fragrant shampoo, the odor disappears. We are provided with clean towels for each day we stayed there. Hand soap in a dispenser is provided near the sink. Body wash soap, also in a dispenser, is also provided in the shower stall. A roll of tissue is also provided. However, there are no toothpaste, toothbrush, shampoo, conditioner, shave, and other toiletries one might expect. Fortunately, we came prepared in the event that these things are not provided so we brought our own. The shower stall is narrow but it fits us just right and so, again, just like the case of the bed, for anyone bigger or taller, I can imagine some difficulties in taking a shower.

Breakfast is from 8AM to 10:30AM. It is a buffet breakfast and it is at the basement of the hotel. There are tea, coffee, and sugar sachets, butter and bread which can be toasted using the toaster provided, juice, cereals, milk, noodles, rice, empanada, soup, and eggs. On our first morning, we came down at about 5 minutes before 10AM and had expected little food left. We were glad though when we saw still plenty of food instead.

The entrance to the Farrer Park MRT stations is just a leisurely 1.5-minute walk from the hotel. The actual location of the trains is about 3 minutes away from the entrance. The hotel is facing the Serangoon Road where many cars and buses pass by. On the other side of the road, infront of the hotel is the Serangoon Plaza. Most taxi drivers are not familiar with the hotel name and so it helps to mention the Serangoon Plaza, which is well-known in Little India, as a landmark. There is also a taxi stand infront of Serangoon Plaza. We had an early flight back home so when we checked out, it was about 4:30 in the morning. We were able to hail a taxi in less than 30 seconds and it took just about 15 minutes to reach the airport. It also took us about 15 minutes to reach the hotel from the airport.

I would recommend this hotel for anyone who is budget conscious and looking for an easily accessible place and would not be staying in the hotel the whole day. One can not really place their standards so high for a budget hotel like this. Just expect the barest minimum and be happy with the extra perks that come along.

The Claremont Hotel is convienently located in front of the Mustafa Center on Sarangoon Road and this is the only thing going for it. Their is only one lift serviceing the rooms and their is no Hotel lobby area except a porky little reception area and a tour desk which houses a desk for the tour operator and a sofa that looks like it came from a old reject shop. The rooms are air-conditioned and have a bar fridge that is stocked with cans of coke extra. The rooms smell musky- that very old like smell you get in old propertys. Bathrooms very old with mold on the ceilings. But don't be convinced that this is a nice Hotel. In fact I booked mine online because on the outside pictures of the Hotel looks pretty ok. Looks can be deceiving and I was somewhat deceived by the look of the Hotel from the outside.

To say the least whilst I was there, I travelled around Singapore in a Taxi and to get dropped of at this Hotel I found myself always trying to cover my embarrasment to the Taxi Drivers that obviously new that this was not your ordinary Hotel. In fact no Taxi Driver even heard of it and I had to explain to them where it actually was.

The breakfasts was included and to you had to go down to the "basement" to start the buffet. However what we had as a buffet was very ameteur. This was not you ordinary buffet. In fact the Hotel only has Vegetarian buffet only and what we got was Toast, Cerials, Vegetarian Noodles, Boiled Eggs, Fried Chips, Vegetable Samosa and a disgusting concoction of Orange juice I have ever tasted (Packet powdered stuff). My advise is your better of eating outside somewhere in Little India.

The Hotel has no entertainment area or anything as such as this is a two star hotel. All I can say is this- If you are use to looking at 3 star and 4 star and above Hotels then this will be a shocking surprise. I stayed 4 days here and by the fourth day I think my sences had sought of come acustomed to the surroundings. Also one thing I noticed is that the Hotel caters for a vast number of Indians/Pakistanis and I did not find any westerners here at the hotel for the four days I stayed. I am assuming this to be because of the location being in Little India and due to the ever popular close proximity to the Mustafa Centre being a major convinence to them.

Overall if you only want a place to sleep then this Hotel maybe what your looking for. It is cheap but you should not expect alot from it. The rooms are extreamly outdated and are in need of serious refurbishment but is somewhat "clean" to an extent (could be much better). Old place Lingering smell persists. In my opinion and having stayed in 3 plus hotels and above in Asia, this Hotel rates as Terrible and is a dump whilst its little saving grace being right opposite Mustafa Centre and an Indian Restaurant next door giving a fair buffet for around 14 singapore bucks. Don't expect a porter to take your baggage up because their isnt any and expect to struggle carrying baggage in the porky rickety lift to your room.
On a rating of 1 to 10 I would rate this around a 3. Faulty Towers is even better. A real Budget Hotel
