Partner and I stayet at the Stamford as what was supposed to be a last week of luxury in a three-week stay in Malaysia and Singapore. And seeing as our room at the Stamford would cost more than triple what we paid for an entire three-bedroom condo in Kota Kinabalu, we were expecting great things.

There are, to be fair, some wonderful things about the Stamford. We stayed in the executive floors (57-60) and as such had our pick of several locations for a very nice free breakfast; among these we liked the variety and authenticity of the spread in the hotel's "Kopi Tiam" the best. Also, the spa (gym/spa/pool) was fantastic with a men's spa that was pure luxury. The location was tremendous, right above City Hall MRT and steps from too many dining options, high and low end, to count. And the staff was generally very nice and accommodating.

The problem was with the rooms, and no matter how nice location and amenities are, if the room isn't good then neither is the experience. The trouble started when we were first booked into a smoking room on 57 despite adamantly pointing out that this was unviable for us. The room reeked of smoke, especially the mattress, and on first complaint the hotel operator asked if we wanted it SPRAYED. Amazing. We said we wanted a new room and after waiting something like 90 minutes in this smelly room waiting for a "porter" (why, exactly?) we finally got into a nonsmoking room on 58.

First problem: 58 smells like smoke too, a problem that we eventually got used to but really why in the 21st century are hotels even allowing smoking? Bigger, MUCH bigger problem: The AC is woefully insufficient. This is SINGAPORE. It is HOT and unspeakably HUMID and without adequate AC your towels (you know, the ones you want to re-use to help the environment?) never dry and sadly neither does your sweaty body or your post-shower corpse, and with two people in the room, it just gets warmer and warmer. We complained several times and after night 4 (of 7) being almost completely sleepless, I called to say that we either get a new room or we are leaving.

So we get a new room, on 59. And of course, the AC is just as bad. But we endured and made it out, sleepless and sticky, and were thrilled to return home to Calgary, Canada where it was -15C on our return. It felt like baptism.

A couple more minor complaints: S$30 a DAY for WIRED internet is worse than absurd. It was also annoying that we were forced to take the elevator every time we wanted to get two (and then one) storey up to get to the executive lounge. The stairway door to our floors were unlocked but 60 was always locked- why? This was wasteful and very time consuming.

When I checked my folio before checkout I was under the impression that I had our first day's charges waived and in light of how poor my experience was here I was happy to see this. Nope. Just an accounting catch-up I guess- no recompense at all.

I adored Singapore but compared to our first two nights' experience at the lovely and AIR CONDITIONED Parkroyal on Kitchener Road, the Stamford was a massive disappointment.

Great location next to Raffles - best location to see NYE fireworks.

Room on 55th floor obviously had great views. However, it was filthy when I checked in and I had to get housekeeping up as soon as I got into the room.

Buffet breakfast was good but expensive unless you have a deal - I had mine though Singapore Airways Stopover, which is worth it.

Have a drink at the top of the hotel - great views - and I think the Singapore Sling is stronger than at Raffles long bar!

Just come back from staying at this hotel over Christmas! We had stayed here previously when it was called the Westin Stamford so knew what to expect overall. Check-in was prompt and the staff member attending to us was very welcoming! Actually all staff during our stay were very attentive and courteous. Room was big enough for 2 Adults and 2 children. Plenty of toiletries stocked in the bathroom. Only thing about the room that needs improving , maybe putting a child proof lock on the sliding door to the balcony, a little bit worrying with a four year old on the 32nd floor. Swimming Pool area has plenty of room and plenty of chairs with a separate kiddies pool. Plenty of choices right outside the hotel for food. Hotel joins on to Raffles City Shopping Complex. City Hall MRT station is next door to the hotel as well. Orchard Rd is 1- 3 MRT stops away depending on which part of Orchard Rd you want to shop at. You can actually walk to Orchard Rd, probably take 15-20 mins. Nearby shopping complexes Marina Square and Suntec City are accessible via the underground pass Citylink Mall so shops galore! Suntec City had plenty of sales while we were there, I absolutely love Carrefour! Wish they had one of those stores in Perth! Worst thing about my stay in Singapore was it was too short, 5 nights just went too quick!

Stayed for 2 nights in April as part of a stopover from Australia to London.

On arrival at the hotel (around 4pm), the check-in area was absolutely manic and we had to wait around 20 minutes, but staff apologised for the delay and were very friendly.

Our room was on 27th floor and was relatively small but comfortable, clean and had everything that we needed. The added bonus with this hotel is that all rooms have a balcony which is great (if not rather scary when you're that far up!).

The hotel is in a great location for sightseeing and almost next door to Raffles Hotel (you must go in for a Singapore Sling).

You must try out cocktails at Equinox on 72nd floor of the hotel. We timed it just before sunset and the views were amazing. We treated ourselves to a massage (thanks Henry!) which was just what we needed after a hard day of sightseeing :-)

We didn't eat at the hotel as there is such a choice of restaurants nearby.

Overall, would thoroughly recommend this hotel, especially if you are flying Singapore Airlines as you get a great discount.

My wife was in Singapore for two weeks on business, and I joined her for a long weekend in the middle of the trip. We picked the Swissotel due to its central location and due to its availability during our timeframe.

We had a room on the 34th floor, overlooking the harbor. The view was wonderful. The room itself was nicely appointed; I wouldn't say it was sumptuous, but it was quite nice.

The staff was quite friendly. They helped me out with tourist questions a few times. We ate at the breakfast buffet, which was wonderful. It was somewhat expensive, but the food was great, and the selection pretty impressive.

The hotel sits right on top of a subway station, which made getting around a breeze.

Highly recommended!
