I love burgers and its not easy finding a place that serves up a decent burger in Singapore. I have even tried the burgers in DB Bistro Moderne in the Marina Bay Shoppes and other places recommended by food bloggers in Singapore.

My idea of a great burger is the beef patties itself - the meat has to be of good quality, the buns just the right amount of texture such that the any garnishes added to the burger doesnt start to make the buns start sogging, and of course good and not skimpy garnishes. And if I am paying top dollars for a great burger, it should not taste like it came from one of the fast food joints.

Bergs serve decent burgers. There is a decent selection of burgers - you can see it on their website - my favourite being the Berg itself...large size. There are two sizes and unfortunately, fries and drinks costs an additional S$4.

There are even vegetarian and chicken options. Had a meal with a vegetarian friend who had the Falafel vegetarian burger and conclusion was that it is very good.

Overall, there is not much of an atmosphere in the Berg in the CBD area but it does what it is suppose to do - serve decent tasting burgers.

My only complain would be 1) quality of fries - wish it is crispier 2) choice of drinks that go with the S$4 add on - you are given a choice of lemon ice tea or ice tea - no other substitutions. I think that is rather poor.

A meal would set you back around S$15-18 - not pocket change but is a place I would return to whenever I am in the mood for a decent burger.

I would definitely not be going back. It seems like a pretty crowded place, so this may be it was an isolated case.

Bergs is one of the many restaurants in the Far East Square, a roofed-in collection of businesses near Raffles Place. They do at least 12 different varieties of burger (including two breakfast burgers). I think you’d have to lead a rather wayward lifestyle to think a burger is a suitable meal for breakfast, but then who am I to judge? And besides, they have two (not one! Two!) vegetarian options, the Good Falla (falafel) and the Krakatoa (tofu). Yes, those names don’t make much sense, which is in the fine tradition of other upscale burger joints. Like Hong Kong’s Shake Em Buns, Bergs also offers innuendos masquerading as food. Or perhaps I’ve a dirty mind and a Morning Glory is just a burger that’s glorious in the morning. Hmm. And again, hmm.

Service is prompt and friendly. There’s not much atmosphere, because as well as being in the famously antiseptic, planned and manufactured city of Singapore, you’re within an antiseptic, planned and manufactured mall. Only the tinny “Chinese” music playing over the mall’s PA distinguishes this from anywhere else in the world, despite the best efforts of Bergs’ stereo to drown it out with middle of the road hip hop.

Ah well. Antiseptic isn’t a bad thing: the food is prepared in a clean environment, without any insects swarming over you while you sit and wait. On reflection, I don’t mind a bit of air conditioning, in its place.

And what about the burgers themselves? They come in two sizes: regular and small. Small is enough for me. If you don’t trust my judgment, they’ll show you both sizes of bun for comparison purposes. Which is nice. Fries are chunky, not bootlace, very hot, very salty, very good. Burger was very flavoursome, with an unexpected slice of avocado on top, and good, crisp lettuce. Also a bit salty: you’ll want to get a drink with this.

Maybe pricy at $16 for a burger and fries, but that’s not extortionate. Not McDonalds prices though.
