The location of this hotel is the best aspect. Right in the heart of Chinatown - near vendors, the train station and hawker center. While many comments say the rooms are small - they are in line with lodging in Singapore. The rooms are clean and have a flat-screen television and free wifi. The design of the bathroom is somewhat odd and with the shower area near the toilet. With no wall to capture the water, the shower is easily soaked! It took me a couple of times to figure out how to keep from soaking the entire bathroom but it can be done with a little finesse.

Breakfast is included in the price and is nothing overly special. The breakfast area doubles as the bar at night and is rather small. Have breakfast early to avoid the sqeeze of the crowd otherwise it can be a little hectic.

I thought the hotel was very quaint and comfortable. There was definitely value for the money as hotels in Singapore can be rather expensive. Being in an area that is busy (more vendors set up tables behind the hotel at night to create a great food market feel), so close to the train and with lots of temples/mosques within walking distance, we felt like this place was almost perfect for a short stay.

The location is unbeatable. Right smack in Chinatown. 5 minutes walk to an MRT station, 5 minutes walk to bus and taxi stands. Eateries are everywhere. However, the room I have is so so small. I can barely walk properly with my luggage in the room. The toilet is also tiny. With a shower, the whole toilet floor will be wet and flooded. Sound proofing is poor. The rumbles of cars and trucks can be clearly heard through the window throughout the night - if you are a light sleeper, you will get little sleep! Although I love the location, I dont think I get value for the money I paid for the room.

Room Tip: Ask for room that does not face the streets.

Dear Valued Guest,

Thank your for your review and we are glad that you liked the convenience location.

The streets in Chinatown tend to be a little bustling at night, and whilst it reflects the ambience in Chinatown, it can be troubling for travellers like you, which we are sorry to hear about. Our practice is to offer our guest a change of room that is not facing the streets.

Whilst the room size of Santa Grand Hotel Lai Chun Yuen may not be preferred by all travellers, we do have other Santa Grand hotels in our chain, like Santa Grand Hotel Chinatown just a minute walk from Santa Grand Hotel Lai Chun Yuen, Santa Grand Hotel Bugis or Santa Grand Hotel East Coast to meet the diverse need of customers.

Once again, thank you for sharing your experience with us on TripAdvisor. We look forward to welcoming you in the near future.

It's LGBT friendly (in fact, in front / across this hotel is the gay bar, you can see the flags there).

If you arrive Singapore in such a late nite, don't bother to take other transportation, just queue the taxi from the airport and it will cost you SGD27 (one way, 1USD=SGD1.22 as of now or today).
There are 2 Santa Grand which thy are all on the same street and they are same management and this one has name Lai Chun Yuen. It's nice when you have all detail info about this, since not every taxi driver will know right away, you need to tell this hit or clue, in Chinatown on Temple Street, they will recognize it right away...

Arrive very late at nite, of course I said to myself, this is not Ritz Carlton, so no one will open the door for you. Well, I have checked in the morning or day time too, it's still the same, nobody. Okay, I like the fast and quick check in especially after 20hours flights? Yeah... they call my name (I bet I'm the last one that hasn't checked in...lol).

I booked standard room, ..no deposit money nor credit card asked, they trust you.., that's the way it should be. I look around and I say to myself again, interesting..., I like the concept, red colors surround and I feel relax and so cozy tho. No elevator, only escalator, to second floor the elevators work well, from 2nd floor to 3rd floor seems elevator not working, so gotta walk on that elevator, it's not a long one but still. Watch out the floor, because it's not same height and you barely can see it too, so don't get slip or you may fall.

Now, my room, uhmm...if you are such a claustrophobic, this standard room IS NOT for you at all. NO. Open the room and gotta have to put your key on th wall in order to activate the light and AC. It won't take long, AC works well. There is small LCD TV on the wall in your bedroom, they have free safety box, and sufficient bathroom(no tub) with limited toiletries. The bed, I am not a firm bed lover, so can't really sleep. One bottle water is just for a there on the table, and a pair of sleeper too in the armoire. And just one towel.

Breakfast in this hotel is terrible, beans, omelette, sausage, hams, and breads are served, watermelon and papaya too, and OJ, milk and water, that's it, the breakfast place is very small, it's too small actually and it's not comfortable. And service is below to average.

I choose this hotel is because location near to MRT/train station named China Town, and just right there with all bargaining shops and Budha Tooth Relic Temple and Museum (free entrance and so amazing) also near Sri Mariaman Indian Temple (there is entrance fee). You prolly still ask me, but why still this hotel? Most of hotel around this area, either terrible or so so, unless renowned chains hotel. I learned something, USD89 + USD27 taxi , well honestly, there are couple nice ones around USD128 (thru www.hotwire.com) but not around this location. So, either is gonna be expensive one with a nice one or just expensive like this one for so so or so cheap ones for even worst, so you decide. I also ask courtesy late check out, it's said to me, up to one o'clock due to full occupancy. Ok...

The staff are reserved, not really have a personal touch, meaning they are like robot. And make sure if you wanna ask something, for example questions about a place or similar, make sure they understand your point, necessity, wish or hope and clarify it. That's what I'm gonna say.

In my opinion, the price for this hotel is for location only, it's because an opportunistic location, other than that... It's just not worth for your $ to spend so just better get the cheap ones around since you will get the same treat and the same size of room as well. How you do that? Check the map around the area and browse all the hotels surround it, I'm sure you will get one you like.

Dear Valued Guest,

Thank you for taking time to write us a review. Indeed, Santa Grand Hotel Lai Chun Yuen is a heritage of an opera theatre converted into a hotel which we are glad that you liked the concept and also the convenience location.

As regards the breakfast, we serve simple continental breakfast to cater to a wide preference of our guests. This is generally quite acceptable to guests who can also have the option of eating along the food street to have a taste of the local Singapore hawker fare.

Unfortunately, our hotel standard room is small and is only meant for solo traveler. To increase guest comfort, we would encourage guests to use the lobby and stage area which are very quiet and conducive, and full day complimentary coffee, tea and free wi-fi service.

Once again, thank you for sharing your opinion and your experience on TripAdvisor. We look forward to welcoming you again in the near future.

This is my second time staying at this hotel. I chose to stay this hotel again because I'm a solo female traveler. The hotel located in the center of chinatown which is so convenient and safe for a female traveler to walk alone to MRT station. The room is small but it is just nice for a single traveler but the wall soundproofing is poor which the next door turned on the tv the whole night that i could not sleep well. The wireless coverage is perfect! The bed is comfortable. The toilet is nicely decorated and clean but the light is too dim.
