“Small but comfortable”
Reviewed September 10, 2012

This is my second time staying at this hotel. I chose to stay this hotel again because I'm a solo female traveler. The hotel located in the center of chinatown which is so convenient and safe for a female traveler to walk alone to MRT station. The room is small but it is just nice for a single traveler but the wall soundproofing is poor which the next door turned on the tv the whole night that i could not sleep well. The wireless coverage is perfect! The bed is comfortable. The toilet is nicely decorated and clean but the light is too dim.

Dear Valued Guest,

Thank you for your partonage at Santa Grand Hotel Lai Chun Yuen. We are extremely pleased to know that you have enjoyed your stay with us. We are also glad that you liked our opera-styled and the convenience location.

Unfortunately, the hotel room is small, and to increase guest comfort, we would encourage guests to use the lobby and stage area which are very quiet and conducive, and full day complimentary coffee and tea and free wi-fi service.

Once again, thank you for sharing your experience with us on TripAdvisor. We look forward to welcoming you back anytime!

Regards,
Hotel Management Team

I'm writing this review on behalf of my parents (late 50s to mid 60s) who stayed at this hotel a month ago while I stayed in a backpacker hostel nearby. The review is based on their comments and my observations.

Design + Decor: Really, really interesting. Good job to Santa Grand who managed to preserve an old Chinese opera theatre and converted it into a hotel. You got to go there to appreciate it.

Service: Not bad. My mom remarked that their morning call is a little unconventional. The staff knocked on the door rather than use the phone.

Rooms: My parents stayed in a double deluxe. Room is small (as with many other Singaporean hotels) but clean and comfortable. Bathroom is surprisingly rather spacious and clean too. Room has a little balcony overlooking the streets which is a nice touch.

Location: In the middle of Chinatown. Very convenient. A couple of minutes walk from Chinatown MRT. Bus stops are located nearby. 10 minutes bus ride down to Orchard Road. I highly recommend taking buses as it gives you opportunity for sightseeing without having to walk!

Food: Are you kidding me? It's location ensure that food is literally within 10 metres of all directions!! Just do a google search of all the yummy food places within Chinatown.

Room Tip: Choose highest floor if possible for high ceilings in the rooms. Probably less noisy too.

I chose the hotel based on location and pictures, and indeed both met the expectations. It is in the middle of the touristy Chinatown, only a minute away from the subway. The building is an old and quite nicely renovated Chinese Opera theatre. However: water leaking in bathroom, permanently flooding the bathroom floor; pretty noisy from the street because of poor window insulation; noisy from other rooms and corridor because of cardboard-like interior walls; and the room was infested with fleas, leading to a nice bunch of bites to wake me up in the morning ... the rooms are so tiny that there is no room for a bedside desk even. given SIngapore's hotel price average, I guess much more could not have been expected, but still an experience I would rather not repeat.

Room Tip: not sure whether available, but if there are rooms NOT facing Temple Street, these should be less no...

Dear Valued Guest,

Thank you for your valuable feedback. We are glad that you like the hotel’s location and convenience in Chinatown, and the opera-theme decorations. We also recognize some shortcomings in our facility that you have mentioned, and it has attracted our management’s attention. We have taken immediate action to correct some of the areas to improve and will continue to monitor the situation. Such feedback like yours will drive us to do better.

The streets in Chinatown tend to be a little bustling at night, and whilst it reflects the ambience in Chinatown, it can be troubling for travellers like you, which we are sorry to hear about. Our practice is to offer our guest a change of room that is not facing the streets.

Once again, We thank you for your feedback and hope to have a chance to host you again soon.

I stay here on my trips to Singapore, I love the location, the hotel design and the staff are helpful.
I have tried many around China Town, and I like this one the best.
Sometimes they have good pricing on rooms as well
Will stay here again for sure!!!!

Stayed in the superior room and it was really very small! Was abit shocked as I have difficulty crossing the walkway inside the room.. i even have to give way to my partner who wanted to walked past the walkway. There is only 1 mirror which is in the toilet.. but it is quite dim and i cant even see myself clearly in the bathroom! The toilet is quite dark and I do not know how the other people use the mirror! The sunlight does not shine in as well! Or maybe their light in the toilet is the cheap kind... The shower is good and there are 4 small bottles of 2 in 1 hair-and-body soap and also toothbrush, toothpaste, comb and shower cap. What I love most is that the bed is super comfortable! I had a good night's sleep. There are advantages and disadvantages... The good thing is it is located in the heart of chinatown and when you exit the building, the whole stretch of food awaits you. The bar at santa grand lai chun yuen is not very good..very typical kind of bar. The welcome drink is a cup of orange juice and the breakfast consists of bread, baked beans, sausages and ham and comes with tea/coffee or orange juice. As I'm not very particular about food, Im quite satisfied with it as it is a buffet. I believe this is of a hostel standard type of breakfast. The hotel staff were very friendly and helpful.

I will definately come back to this hotel. But I will choose the deluxe room next time! I will give it 5/10. At least a pass! Please dont be deceived by the luxurious reception hall.. I decided to choose this hotel is because of the reception decorations.

Room Tip: get deluxe would be a better choice, although i have not stayed in there before. superior is bad eno...

Had been staying in this hotel for the last 5 trips to Singapore. The reason for choosing this hotel is basically due to the location of the hotel as well as the room rate is at my budget.

Pros:
The main lobby is definitely a GRAND view.

The room is adequately enough for single person (whether for holiday/business trip).

The hotel is surrounded by FOOD in Chinatown, I can say you will never go hungry here. There are restaurants/cafes/dessert shops/food courts at every corner.

Cons:
Some of the single bed room has a quite "Unique" toilet bowl position. that seems to be quite uncomfortable for people with long legs. Yes, the toilet bowl facing the wall had a very, and I really mean narrow leg room.

Besides that, the toilet door somehow could not keep the water from flowing out of the bathroom. Thus, you will find water stain on the bathroom door from the outside wall.

Nights could be rather noisy with the stalls closing shops, lorry cleaning the roads and stuff. BUT this won't be a problem if you are a night owl or can sleep soundly with no concern over the noise.

OVERALL:
This is a recommended place to stay if you are looking for convenience of FOOD and MRT.

Thanks
Willy

Room Tip: Room on the highest floor (third) would have lesser noise.

The location is excellent. This hotel is in the centre of china town, near to cheap eateries and bars, and the china town night market. And not so far from the city centre/marina area in one direction and Clarke Quay/Robertson Quay in the other.

The rooms and indeed bathrooms are small and compact, but adequate and sufficiently appointed. The hotel itself is quite attractive, with the Chinese Opera House retained in the centre of the building, making it quite charming.

There is free wifi, and also free tea/coffee available.

Breakfast is quite disappointing, I would say it's better not to book it and just eat at one of the many nearby restaurants.

There is an Indian temple nearby which is worth a brief visit (Sri Mariamman), it is also near to a
mosque which is less impressive (Jamae Mosque).

Dear Valued Guest,

Thank you for your great review. Indeed, Santa Grand Hotel Lai Chun Yuen is easily accessible with the MRT stations, Chinatown market, and attractions just a stone throw away. We are glad to know that you have enjoyed your stay with us.

As regards the breakfast, we serve simple continental breakfast to cater to a wide preference of our guests. This is generally quite acceptable to guests who can also have the option of eating along the food street to have a taste of the local Singapore hawker fare.

Once again, thank you for sharing your feedback with us on TripAdvisor. We look forward to welcoming you back anytime!
