This is a part of old Singapore that is gradually taken over by commercial food outlets. Today, one can still browse in antique furniture shops, traditional Chinese herbal shops, old style bread shops and even one that makes paper 'houses' to be burnt as offerings. Thankfully, the number of KTV lounges and bars has not increased lately, although at night, they are frequented by a different crowd. There has been a noticeable increase in the number of modern food outlets that sell chocolates, Vietnamese food, bakeries, etc. I hope they retain or preserve the older shophouses, many of which still have elaborate Peranakan designs and patterns.
