“Excreptional service and concept. Great hotel for Singapore”
Reviewed January 27, 2013

This hostel provides an excellent, clean, trendy, and cheap accommodation all in one. An excellent place to stay for non-luxury travelers to an expensive city like Singapore. The rooms were all clean and the beds were surprisingly comfortable. The mixed dorm had a nice view of the street and I definitely appreciate all of the anemities. The location was in a prime section of the city near a very pleasant and quiet street. There were restaurants and pubs nearby and it was near one of the main tourist attractions, Chinatown. It is near one of the main transit stations, the Chinatown metro, which is about a 5-minute walk away. Perfect location, perfect service, perfect price. I'd definitely like to see hostels like this more often.

I was meeting my boyfriend for the first time in this hostel. I stayed for a week with my mom and my boyfriend.

The bed and the bathroom is really clean :) Just need better conditioning at the Spring Mist room. Its cold, but people need to share :) For Moslem, there's water in the bathroom that you can use. The best spot are massage room and loft :P

Clean kitchen, where you can get free toast, cereal, fresh milk, coffee, and apple juice all day :) Just don't forget to wash your dishes.

Don't worried about the privacy, we got enough privacy, and at the same time, we can have a chit chat with other peoples around the world.

The officers? The best hostel officers that I ever met in my life. If you need a help just ask them

Thank you the Matchbox....I can't wait to come back :P

Room Tip: For moslem, you can choose ladies room. Its more private and cozy :)

I've stayed at Matchbox on two separate occasions during the Fall of 2012 in the large mixed dorn. The location is top-notch, right in the heart of Chinatown with access to two subway stations, cheap hawker food centres (perfect for those on a budget), shopping and nightlife. The staff is extremely friendly and accommodating, especially if you are looking for off the beaten track attractions and great shopping. The hostel, although small, is clean, organized and comfortable. The loft space, with couches, bean bags and even indoor swings is a great place to unwind after exploring Singapore. The pods are a good size and they also have nice comfy queen beds for couples. Continental breakfast and wi-fi is free, which is also a bonus! I also appreciated having free access to laptops as well.

The bathrooms are communal, but clean and offer hot showers. I really liked the free soaps and shampoos available.

Negatives: the kitchen is really small, but that's bearable when you have super cheap food stalls around the corner. Breakfast can get busy. It can also be a bit anti-social if travellers never leave their pod, so get out of bed and mix and mingle in the common areas (there's two!). Air-con should be a bit cooler in the rooms or add a few extra fans to improve air flow.

Tip: book on a site like hostelbookers or hostelworld because the rates are a bit cheaper.

This is a well located hostel momemnts from Chinatown and MRT station (10 min walk with backpacks!) and a food hawkers mall (average meal $4) (large tiger beer $6)
The 16 bed dorm ($30sgd pp) was possibly the best dorm I was in, really clean, nice aircon, aditional fans if required, wifi in room, I really likes the cubicle style bed, espically as mine was on the bottom, it ensured a great deal of privacy, one normally does not get in a dorm.
All day breakfast, tea, coffee, toast jam, peanut butter, cereal and fruit juice. Kitchen is extremely small, do not plan to cook anything here!
There is also a nice common room where you can relax and watch a dvd.
my main issues is sometimes breakfast bar was empty and not refilled regularily. Other issues was that yo hadnto go down to flights of stairs to access the shared bathroom.

Stayed at Matchbox for three days 5th to 8th January 2013. Experienced traveller etc as you can see by my contributions so feel more qualified then most with my honest review.
Hostel in Chinatown part of town but unfortunately most of old character Chinatown demolished and where this hostel is is a very trendy and expensive part of town, certainly not a back packer area. Food and drink very expensive if on a tight budget. Having said that, it is 5-7 minutes walk to food court.
Hostel itself has been badly designed, a backpacker /traveller will immediately see the problems.
On ground floor you have showers and tollets in same area. When on toilet, your trousers get wet when floor damo. Tiles and showers okay, but no privacy as you have to get changed in confined space or get changed where different sexes are. Leisure room on ground floor with massage chair- total waste of space and not neccessary- a gimmick.
No other showers or toilet apart from ground floor, hence if you need to go to toilet during night it is a long walk to toilet, id you have to go several times during night it gets annoying.Needs to be toilets on other floors. No handrail or bannister when walking stairs, very dangerous and could lead to slip or fall.
The kitchen on the first floor housed a pantry with food stuffs and a washer and dryer, this room was very small and tight. Technically it may provide eating area but Totally inpractical. Very poor. Needs to be much much larger kitchen and dining area with chairs etc and self catering facilities for eating and preparation of food.
Bedroom Dorm- Gimmick pods!! These are a row of single beds with a couple of double beds in middle section( Springmist room) There is no curtain for privacy when you are in your bed. Consequently I saw several people in their underwear of different sexes. Totally unacceptable in todays travells. This could have been avoided by having a curtain at entrance to bed space.
Get away from this name of Pod, nothing like in Japan, this is simply a row of beds. Think of it as a rabbit hutch and you will get the picture.
Lockers in dorm- good idea but in the locker there is a fixed shelf, so consequently you cannot get you main/big bag in, just a smaller bag. Consequently, rucksacks littering the floor space!!
Top floor. Common room with large TV. No External TV stations just DVDs, not good!!
There were a pile of bean bags in the room and 2 swings!! Whats the purpose of the swings for for goodness sake- apart from the fact it makes it trendy but totally unneccessary and wast of space!! This area here could be kitted out with kitchen facilities and table and chairs.

So that is my honest review. A nice clean hostel, trendy and appealing for youngsters, first time travellers etc.,impressed by gimmicks. Not for experienced travellers who will immediately see problems as I did straightaway. The owners need to redesign the hostel as a matter of
urgency.Particular privacy and kitchen facilities. Its not trendy to see people in underwear etc,
The hostel is more a weekend hostel for people visiting the local very expensive bars. You'll know what I mean, no cheap bars, trendy couples bars. Replace pod name with rabbit warren/hutch. Sorry Match box owners but have to be honest.

Room Tip: Try another hostel if possible. If you are a young traveller you may think its a friendly trendy plac...

This hostel was an amazing place to stay. Best thing about this hostel is that it creates a great environment to meet other travellers but also keep your security and privacy. The second best thing about this hostel is the location; if you walk down the road you go to the China-Town area with cheap food, temples and trains. If you venture up the road you walk into the city centre, high end shopping, great nightlife and the Quay. Friendly staff tops off a perfect stay!

Room Tip: Mixed Dorm - Great to meet new travellers. Smaller Dorm - Good if you don't want to be disturbe...

The hostel is very well done and the common spaces are excellent. Everything was very clean. The matchbox beds are very convenient as they provide some isolation from noise, lights, etc., while allowing you to read on your bed without annoying others.
