“Great stay!”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed June 28, 2013

Clean, well maintained hostel with very good showers. There is a nice common area and rooftop terrace, and the central location in the middle of Chinatown next to the MRT is very convenient. Only small point for improvement concerns the breakfast facilities (get a new toaster!). Single loft room was very small, but actually quite cosy, and with good aircon. Overall a pleasant stay!

Service was excellent. Breakfast was just right. It is a good place for a group of youths to stay in. However I do not like the concept of toilets with showers overhead. It gets the toilet seats all wet. I hope they solve this problem.

Stayed in 6 bed dorm - impeccably clean, tastefully Spartan rooms. Great outdoor breakfast area/patio. Reception had a rather cool, minimalist design - iMacs for use by guests. The trendy and hip staff at the reception made you feel very welcome. I loved staying here. I did think the bathroom facilities (while very cool in design, naturally) were quite dirty and off-putting. This is one thing that absolutely needs to rectified immediately.

My husband and I stayed in a room with a bunkbed (both beds were single). We were surprised to find that the size of the room was very small, barely enough space to get in and out of bed and to place our luggage in.

I would like to suggest perhaps a shelf or two just to place small items on for convenience, and perhaps a pole rather than a hook to hang towels or clothes on. While I am aware that the hostel does provide towels, some people might prefer to use their own.

Additionally, I would say that a dehumidifier in the corridor might help to solve the problem of the lack of ventilation as most of the rooms do not have windows. Due to Singapore's humidity, the beds did tend to feel a little damp and smell musty due to this.

One last point on the subject of the rooms, light sleepers like myself - be warned as the walls are incredibly thin. Our room was a few metres away fron the outdoor area and we could hear everything. People slamming the sliding doors really do not help either.

I was also shocked to find that the hostel charges SGD$12 just to use the washer and dryer - additionally so when there was no system to help guests book times when they could clean and dry their clothes. Also, I found that no maintenance had been done on the washer and dryer which should be necessary in order to keep them functioning at their best to accommodate all of the guests. Again, I would like to suggest paying a much lower fee to book a particular time to wash and dry clothes at - $12 seems a bit excessive.

On the subject of cleanliness, I did not find it comfortable to walk barefoot in my own room as I felt the floors were quite dirty. Perhaps the hostel might benefit by having lockers for people to place their shoes in at the entrance that leads into the rooms, making it easier on the staff to clean floors as well.

Service-wise - there were a few incidents that did stick out.

My husband and I were sleeping in our room at around noon when the staff tried to open out door, when my husband tried to keep the door shut and said we were trying to sleep - they kept trying to open the door until my husband had to shout at them to go away. Understandable as we were both quite jetlagged and rudely awakened by men trying to get in.

Would suggest that your staff gently knock first before barging into rooms. Would like to add that we got no apology as well.

Front desk service is polite and well spoken.

In regards to the toilets, was quite annoyed by unstable toilet seats. It might also do the showers some good if the walls were given a scrub. Was definitely impressed that I did not see a single pest (cockroaches and lizards usually being quite common in SG)

All in all, I think this hostel would be great if it just paid attention to very small details. The location is fantastic and the staff in general, polite. The outdoor area is lovely and quite nice and cool despite the weather.

Had the utmost pleasure of staying with the 5footwayinproject properties in Chinatown very recently
First and foremost all the members of the staff are remarkably cool folk
You.can take the Mtr to the Sentosa monorail within 2 stops
There is a neat open food market nearby
The property is amazingly clean and there is wifi, including two state of the at iMacs for a travelers critical access to outside information
4 and a half stars (minus half as it or not, the aircon was too strong!)

This hostel is a very good place for cheap budgets as it is in Chinatown and near the main places around the marina. Everything was as described. It is a quiet place, sheltered from the outside, but a bit noisy in the rooms. The staff is very friendly. The kitchen, with also free hot beverages and water, is open to the outside and a good place to relax. Bathroom equipment is a little spare and breakfast has only few choices. But all in all we've spent 2 great nights because it's a very interesting location and a clean hostel for a reasonnable price.

We stayed in a 4 bunk room for a few nights, the beds and bedding were really comfortable. The room was pretty tiny, but reasonably clean and in a good location. Great airconditioning, and there was a decent breakfast included.

There was a major problem with not enough bathrooms, only 2 toilets for the whole building and they were combined with showers, so early morning there was an unbearable wait!
