“short stay”
Reviewed March 8, 2014

I had level 3 for 1 person, facing balestier street, a bit noisy and also facing roof. If prefer more quiet and more room space the option is superior single. Room lights buttons are hard to press on, need repalcement or maintanance.

Room Tip: Rooms facing back and side are quiter and more space, however the option is superior room.

The first 4 nights we had a room in level 4 and this is a smokers level, I think. Avoid it if you are sensible on smell. The second 4 nights we stayed in level 5 and thats a great difference. Theromm size is very tiny but OK for the price and very clean. The staff is very helpful. The rooms are quiet and I slept very well. The hotel is relativ close to center if you use public transport the MRT is 15min walk or you take the bus right in front off Shaw Plaza to Orchard with one change.

We stayed 8 nights at the AQUEEN; staff were very helpful; room was very clean and comfortable (didn't realise there was no fridge but we didn't miss it as cold drinks were available close by)
Great food court up the road and lovely local market with more than 40 food stalls 5 mins walk away. Cheap by Singapore standards but that is quite expensive by SE Asian standards
It was 800 meters from the nearest station at Novena but I enjoyed that walk through the hospital each day

Located 10 mn. walk from Novena MRT (bus service available as well) and from here 6 mn. by MRT to Orchard. So not in the center but not really away from it. Rooms facilities are good (flat screen TV, multi plug, coffee amenities...). Room is small (superior single) but very clean. Will recommend if location is not a priority factor. Friendly staff.

While not a bad hotel, the Aqueen Balestier would not be my first choice if I had to choose again. First, the location is not ideal for touring the city. It is about a 10-15 minute walk to the Novena MRT station, or about a 15-20 minute bus ride there. Not really ideal for easy access to the rest of the city. Second, there is not a whole lot in the area. There is a small selection of Chinese restaurants and convenience stores, while a couple of blocks down the main street there are small shopping centers with other restaurants (including McDonalds and KFC if you need it) and grocery stores. The hotel itself is small and compact, with a little bar in the front lobby area. Staff are generally helpful, but a bit reserved. Each floor can only be securely accessed with the elevator by using the room key card, which is nice feature. The room itself is tiny, with only about 50cms of space around the bed to walk. There is just a little space on the window ledge to put your bags. The bathroom is so small that the toilet is located in the shower space. This means that the toilet gets wet when you take a shower, so I recommend using the toilet first! The lighting in the room is horribly dim, which made it hard to read at night. The same can be said of the low lighting over the bathroom mirror, which made it hard to shave accurately. The bed had to be the hardest I've ever slept in anywhere. The hotel decor was nice and modern, but the hallway carpets could use a good cleaning.

Pros: none really

Cons: location, room size, lighting, hard bed

This small, neat and relatively new hotel is fine for travelers who aren’t particularly concerned about being away from the CBD and the overpriced boutiques of Orchard Road. In recent years Singapore hotels have become very expensive and there are few bargains to be found – unlike in most other large Asian cities where you can stay in a luxury property with king size beds, a swimming pool and sumptuous buffet breakfast for the same price as you get a windowless old dog box here.

The Aqueen has several advantages over its rivals at the budget end of the market, most importantly that it has been well maintained and all of the appliances in the room work, including a good sized flat screen television, and the rooms actually have windows - a comparatively rare thing at these prices . There is no wardrobe and the toilet is collocated with the shower – but these things hardly matter for a solo traveler staying for one or two nights. My bed was a single and quite firm, with good clean linen. And the wifi is free and fast – a nice feature because many other Singapore hotels gouge mercilessly by charging for internet access, which in this day is like charging guests for water and air.

While the immediate surrounding area is not especially glamorous with many high rise apartment blocks, there are plenty of nice cafes and restaurants on the main street Balestier Road – so organsing reasonably priced good quality Chinese meals is not a problem. For the truly desperate there is even a McDonald's directly opposite. Having said that, it would be nice if the rooms included a small fridge for cold drinks and food – but you can’t have everything in a small space and at a budget price. There does seem to be some sort of bar arrangement next to the foyer, but it didn’t seem to be open during my short stay. The most common local shops seemed to specialize in home lighting, with plumbing a close second, so if you are after a new lampshade or different type of electrical socket or that hard to get spigot, then this is the place for you.

The taxi ride from Changi cost SGD25 and the trip took about 45 minutes in peak hour traffic. The check in took place at a leisurely speed and the staff seemed helpful and friendly. The nearest MRT station is apparently 20 minutes walk away, but given the low cost of taxis that is not a major concern.

Positives:
The room is very clean and free of cigarette stench.
Adequate space for 2 adult.
Located near 2 bus stops (each bus stop appr. 150 meters from the hotel), no need to get taxi.
Eventhough the hotel don't provide food, so many places to eat around.
Very very close to Boon Tong Kee (one of the most recommended Singapore Chicken Rice).
Fast check-in and check-out time.
Employees were very helpful to try finding my misplaced item, eventhough in the end i found it myself buried in my luggage.
relavitely cheaper than similar hotels around.

Negatives:
Bed is not comfortable, unless you prefer firm type spring-foam bed. we use medium type spring-foam bed at home and find the hotel's bed not very relaxing.
There's a weird "clanging" sound every few seconds, especially when we were using the bathroom (shower, toilets, faucets). We suspected the noise came from the piping or pump, and might be more noticeable since we were staying on the top floor. it would be nicer if the hotel can fix it or at least install some insulation to reduce the noise.

Room Tip: try to not get the top floor
