“Great base for a family holiday”
Reviewed July 16, 2013

We (2 adults, 2 children age 5 & 7) stayed for a week in a 3-bedroom apartment on the top floor (level 7) at Village Residence Clarke Quay. Reservation experience was the best of all the Far East properties we enquired with – a very helpful and enthusiastic response from Carine Tan and Winifred Peter made the booking process very easy, and made us feel that they wanted us to stay.

Check-in about 6pm after flight from Australia was fine, reception staff escorted us to our room and showed us how the apartment worked (including how to access the wonderfully fast and free wifi).

Apartment was a good size for Singapore, about 100 square metres, with a big master bedroom with king be and ensuite, and two other bedrooms – one with a queen, one with two singles. Two large TVs in the master bedroom and living area accepted our Aussie DVD player input no problems, a very small but functional kitchen (full-size fridge, gas stove, crockery – but we mostly ate out) and 5 split-system airconditioners, which were great to get rid of the humidity. Big couch, an armchair, and a 6-seater table. There’s a shower over the bath in the large ensuite, and a much smaller shower and toilet/basin in the second bathroom. The windows opened, for a breath of fresh air before it warmed up each day, and there was a nice basic view towards the city and Clake Quay. The apartment was beautifully quiet – no street noise at all. Beds firm but extremely comfortable.

Free (well, included in the tariff) breakfast in the complex’s business centre Mon-Fri is fine, a good selection of yoghurt, cereals, bread, croissants (kids liked them) and bacon & eggs available on request.

Cleanliness was very good – apartment looks a little quirky at first but is clearly very well maintained, and was very comfortable for our entire stay. Servicing is advertised as 3 times/week, for us only twice though (we arrived on Saturday, room was serviced on Tuesday & Thursday) – but we didn’t really require servicing apart from emptying bins (we since discovered spare rubbish bags and a garbage shute, so not a problem for next time). No washer/drier in our room, there’s in in-house laundry for $4/load, but we just hand washed in the room and air-con dried the clothes overnight.

Location is excellent – about 5 minutes walk to either Clarke Quay MRT or Chinatown MRT stations, and again about 5 minutes walk to Clarke Quay eating precinct. There’s a Fairprice supermarket in the basement of Chinatown Point mall for bread/milk and other essentials. We mostly ate at the local hawker food centres, there’s a small one in the Hong Lim complex behind Chinatown Point mall (about 3 min walk from the apartment), however our favourite was in the Chinatown Complex, on the corner of Smith St & Trengganu St, awesome noodles, rice & black carrot cake for $3/plate each. Kids loved the food!

There’s a great pool on level 4 with a kids pool and a large, clean adults pool that’s suitable for doing laps or playing tips with the kids (as we did). We also visited the fantastic Sengkang and Jurong East swimming complexes, where the kids loved the waterslides (and at about $4 for the family, payable on your MRT card, a lot cheaper than the resort-style waterparks).

We enjoyed our stay here – apartment quality and location were certainly high points – and we’ll come back when next we’re in Singapore. This is a very good place to base yourself for a family holiday – thanks to all the team at Village Residences Clarke Quay for a most pleasant stay.

Room Tip: Ask for a room with washer/drier

Dear CandN73,

Looks like you and your family had an exciting short stay in Singapore.

Village Residence Clarke Quay is near to Chinatown where one can be spoilt with choices on local delicacies.

We do apologise for the number of maid service given as there was a mistake on the schedule arranged.

We look forward to having you and your family back to stay with us soon.

Best regards,

Stayed here with my wife and 10 year old daughter.

2 bedroom, with Kitchen. Was well laid out, clean and plenty of room in the lounge and dining area.

Great location, short walk to Clarke Quay or Robertsons Quay. Cose to the Clarke Quay MRT.

Alround a good place to stay, a little expensive but probably comparable to most places so central.

When- June/ July
Who - 2 adults, 2 kids
How long- 7 nights ( this is the minimum stay)
What- 2 bedroom serviced apartment with small kitchen & washer/ drier.

We have stayed in many apartments but these were perfect. Great location, with a 7/11 downstairs (5-10 minute walk depending on your speed to 2 MRT stations, plus a Fair Price supermarket) close to Clarke Quay and China town with a great swimming pool. A shallow pool for toddlers plus a larger pool that you can easily swim laps in.
A continental breakfast is available Monday to Friday ( not swanky hotel buffet but very nice with pastrys, fruit, cereal etc) but ask for directions to breakfast room as a little hard to find.
I loved that we had an in room washer/ drier and an asked for drying rack materialized no sooner than I hung the phone up- great service and really clean well serviced ( 3 times per week) rooms. Really good showers too.
Lovely attentive breakfast, reception and cleaning staff with cheerful security guards always happy to flag down taxis.
If you are after a hotel experience with room service etc don't stay here but if you want some of the comforts of home plus great service you can't go past this property.
Highly recommended.

Room Tip: Our room had no common shared walls and overlooked the pool- very quiet.

Late last year, I stayed at CSVR for five (5) weeks for a business trip. I particularly liked its location (near Clarke Quay, Chinatown and the CBD in Raffles city) and the spacious apartment area. Further, public transportation is very much accessible within the area. For the first few days however, I faced some difficulties in finding my way back to my service unit as for some reason I always make the wrong turn. Nevertheless, I felt very much at home with the unit that there were weekends when I just wanted to stay in the unit as opposed to going out and further explore Singapore because it really felt like home. The administration regularly provides written announcements beforehand so I was well informed of what would happen which may affect my scheduled activities. Overall, it was a great stay at CSVR.

Stayed at the Central Square Village Residences for 3 weeks during april and may 2013, and for one month in jan. 2012... The very nice, efficient and helpful staff alone would make it worth staying there ! Add the good location, near Clark Kay and Robertson Kay, walking distance to the financial center near the bay area, MRT, very nice clean and spacious apartments with simple but well equipped kitchen, very convenient shopping and a great swimming pool and it will definitely make you feel more at home in Singapore then any hotel room.

Again, my special thanks go the lovely and efficient staff at the Central Square Village Residences, they make the difference, they contributed making my stay an unforgettable good one...

My wife and I lived at Central Square in a 1-bedroom apartment for nearly 2 years, and we really enjoyed our time here. After a year living in Singapore at CSVR, we actually went on a serviced-apartment hunt to gauge other options now that we knew the city and to see what else was available for our budget. We toured or visited 12-15 different places near the Robertson Quay and Orchard Road areas (both within and outside of our budget), and we walked away from those long weekends relieved that we were in the absolute best place for us, ultimately deciding to extend our stay for another year. We recently moved back to the US and miss our "short-stay" apartment in Singapore and the friendly staff that helped make it "home."

If you are looking for a short-term place to stay as a business person or even as a 3+ day visitor in what can be a very expensive hotel/apartment market in Singapore, I would highlight a few key reasons why CSVR is your best option:

--Staff--
Led by Ace, the entire staff is extremely friendly and helpful, from the front desk staff, security/taxi flaggers, housekeeping, and the maintenance guys. Whenever we had questions, requests, or minor issues in the apartment, everyone was quick to help, making our experience there feel like home. As we collected furniture over time from our travels, we would request that the pre-furnished items in the apartment be removed, which they did with no issues. We even hung about 10 pictures in the impenetrable concrete walls, which would not have been possible without the maintenance staff's assistance. The cleaning lady was very professional and always did a great job. Even the lady at breakfast ("Good MORNING!" and "THANK you, have a NICE DAY") was always happy to greet and serve people. As an example of their customer service, my wife actually requested that the gym be opened early so frequently that I think they decided to keep it open 24 hours just to accommodate her!

--Location--
The location is ideal for public transportation, the CBD, and restaurants and shopping. The Clarke Quay and Chinatown MRT stations are about equidistant walking from the complex (7 minutes flat), and there's a bus stop right in front of the building on Havelock. If you ever need a taxi, security will flag one down for you or the front desk staff will book one for you. Chinatown is just across Havelock, accessible from an overpass walkway, and the Riverside Pointe/Clarke Quay/Boat Quay/Robertson Quay areas are very close by. The CBD is about a 10-15 minute walk, but it's literally a 3 minute walk to the river where there are hundreds of bars and restaurants that snake along the river towards Robertson Quay or east towards the Marina. There was a Fairprice (grocery store) built about 5 minutes away on Havelock a few months before we moved back to the US, and we frequented the Subway and 7Eleven at the base of the building. While many of our expat friends lived further north closer to Orchard, we really enjoyed (and ultimately preferred) our location and the proximity to so many different transportation, commercial, and dining options.

--Amenities--
The hotel facilities themselves were great and were actually renovated in the middle of our nearly 2-year stay. The upgrades included a fire alarm system with sprinklers along with new furniture in the living and dining room area. The living/dining room area is huge, but overall, the apartments aren't enormous (though no apartment in Singapore is large by most peoples' standards). The kitchen, outfitted with standard cookware and features, is large enough to fit 2 people comfortably; the bathroom is a bit smaller and more of a solo mission. The beds are king-sized and comfortable, and there is good storage space in the bedroom. The internet is extremely fast, and there are some decent channels on the two large flatscreen TVs in the bedroom and living/dining room area. The pool/barbecue area is huge and family-friendly, though we didn't spend much time out there (FYI Singapore is real hot). The gym (now 24 hours!) is nice and has your standard exercise equipment.

All in all, we had a great experience at the Central Square Village Residences, which I have recommended to co-workers who are in town for short-term assignments or just for a few weeks.

Room Tip: For a quieter room, request a high-floor room facing the courtyard, preferably one that is closer to...

Stayed for 10 weeks on a business trip. Rooms are spacious, albeit old fashioned... the staff are very friendly and in general you will have a comfortable stay. The pool is very nice (although the jacuzzi never worked the whole time I was there) and the gym is small but modern. For the breakfast, ask for directions because there isn't ONE sign to show you the way.

Room Tip: Better to get a view overlooking the pool.
