Hillman restaurant has been around for ages and this has always been our restaurant of choice when we want to enjoy some good old fashioned food.
We would typically stick to the claypot dishes - all of them used to be done really well but recently we just noticed that the food tasted really salty and oily. The claypot beef slices are still one of our favorites. The claypot fishead leaves you gulping loads of tea or iced water. Something about the dish, maybe the msg or something that made all 6 of us really thirsty.

I guess the service is just the most terrible bit. They had some chinese waitress that didn't seem to know the menu or couldn't communicate very well. We had this problem during our recent 3 visits to the restaurant. She could not quite explain what was in the dish and when we tried ordering some of our old time favorites, she kept trying to upsell to us by asking us to get the large portion when we wanted to order a smaller portion so that we could order a few more dishes that we each liked. If she wasn't trying to convince us to get the large portion, she kept asking if we wanted to order more...and that kept on going till dessert. Gosh!
Overall, I think it's about time we went to other restaurants. The food isn't that great anymore and I guess the service was the one that really did it for us.

Nothing special. My first visit since ten years ago.

Paper chickens are very dry and it's just oily.
The service is lousy. They try to sell very hard sharks fin egg as it's expensive.

I am NOT ever going back the place. Check the bill when you settle bill.

Recommend this place for group gatherings or taking an overseas visitor to try this famous restaurant. Paper bag chicken is very good, and so are the claypot dishes. We tried to Happy Tofu which was also very nice and soft. Worth the visit!

My sister and I brought my mother for dinner after finding their new outlet at Kitchener Road.
Arrived 10 mins before opening time, the staff were having their dinner and ignored the group waiting outside. The restaurant opened at 5.30 pm sharp. Less than 10 medium sized tables
downstairs and some guests were asked to climb the stairs to the 2nd level. Quite a few tables were reserved. We did not made any reservation and were given a corner table.
Having patronized the old Cantonment Road outlet since we were kids, mum and us were looking forward to tasting the cray pot bee hoon we so used to loved. We also ordered the cray pot fish head, fried kai lan with crab meat and their paper wrapped chicken. The cray pot bee hoon looked the way it was cooked years ago, but we were totally disappointed it was not as tasty as it looked. Something is lacking, we are agreed. They have the usual lots of whole garlic and shallots but somehow the gravy is lacking in the taste we still remember from young. Somehow the gravy in the fish head taste better, so we ended up mixing the bee hoon with the fish head gravy/soup. The fried kai lan was good and the chicken was ok, we have tasted better ones elsewhere. Surprisingly, 90% of the patrons while we were there are Japanese.
The bill came up to S$60+ for the 3 of us. We were still wondering what is missing in the cray pot bee hoon, and we decided it must have been our taste buds now as compared to those days where eating out is a luxury. Now we are all so spoilt for choice with so many good food and restaurants out there. We asked, would we make a return trip, and all decided no.
