“Disorganised allocation of rooms...”
Reviewed September 21, 2009

When we reached the hotel at 4 pm, the front desk was crowded with people. The lady who attended to us told us that our room wasn't ready! The check in time starts at 3 pm. She then gives us another room on the 7th floor instead of the room on the 8th floor so as not to keep us waiting,. I checked with her if the view is as equally good since we booked a deluxe sea view room. She assured us it was. We went to the room and to our dismay, there was a common deck which could be accessed via a small gate by anyone! Furthermore, our view of the pool was blocked. I called the front desk to reflect our disappointment to them and told them that we'll wait for the room that wasn't ready. It was then they told us the room had been promised to another guest! We were shocked! First it wasn't ready, then it was promised to another guest! After much persistence, the room operator told us that we can have the room on the 8th floor but we have to wait til housekeeping gets it cleaned up. By the time we got into the room, it was already 5.40 pm. If they had allocated the room to us, they should have gotten it cleaned up before the checked in time at 3 pm. I find them very disorganised... It's very unpleasant to start off a staycation in such a manner..

This is our second stay at the hotel, we were last there in 2001. As expected, the hotel is looking a little 'tired' They will have problems next year as there are many new hotels being built close by. The room was large, comfortable and clean. We had a sea view with an adequately sized balcony. Breakfast was good, lots of choice and good service. We dined in the Barnacles resturaunt by the beach. Sevice was fine, although a little too attentive. The choice of seafood is just great and cooked perfectly. After our meal, the chef, Joanne, came out and had a chat with us, there was a very low key and relaxed atmosphere.
We only stayed 2 days, 3 nights so we did not have time to explore the Island, but we know from our previous visit that there is lots to do to keep the little ones happy, this after all called a 'Resort Island'
This hotel, being on Sentoas Island is away from the huslte & bustle of the city, a free shuttle bus takes you into the city to a MRT station. A tourist day pass can be bought which can be used on the buses and trains and is very cheap. The underground goes to most places of interest and this being Singapore, is very clean (London take note!)

I had some trepidation about the hotel after reading the reviews. But my stay was totally pleasant.

This was a business trip but colleagues brought their family along. I ended up with a seaview suite, an upgrade from the hillview because it was the low season.

The hotel does look a little tired and I was told they were going to shut it down for a massive renovation. So I am afraid this review may be of limited use.

The hotel is quiet and away from the city. Its restaurant is good and there are others around. There is a spa and a sizeable pool for swimming or lounging. So a spouse or partner can have a relaxing day out while the other person goes to office.

Because of the vacationing crowd, the downside is that some places can get pretty rowdy. For us, they offered the executive breakfast area located a floor above the cafe. Breakfast at the cafe was very good. Only Movenpick's spread can beat it.

In my case, we had a small group of us. So rather than pay for the meeting room, we opted for the suite. The carpet was fairly new and clean. The wireless internet was free. Everything worked as they should. The owners of the hotel are known to be fussy about details. The toiletries are L'Occitane. Towels are thick and heavy. There are two sets of slippers--the white fluffy one for the bedroom and the green rubber one for the beach. All in all, lots of thought have gone into the design and furnishing of the room.

So to those who had a negative experience, I can only attribute it to the fact that the hotel is being closed down. The renovated hotel should be worth a visit.

(And in case you are wondering: no, I am not related to the owners and neither do I own any shares in any hotel. I think the Internet is bringing down the rates of hotel. Tripadvisor being a good example of how that is working.)

Stayed with my wife and 2 kids (3 yr and 1yr old) for 3 nights in a sea-view room on the 9th floor in Aug.

Room - The room shows its age as other suggested but spacious and have a great view of the resort (see pics). It is spacious enough to house the extra sofa-bed provided and the baby cot on-demand. I didn't notice the smell others mentioned. The air-cond temperature controller wasn't working which make the room a bit cold. We looked at the Hillview room through the door and agreed that it worths the extra ~US$23 to switch to a sea-view room. The view from the balcony (even from the room) is much greater and made you feel like you're on vacation.

Services - Swift response on request. There was no hot water coming out from the tap but was fixed within 15 min after calling the operator. The pre-requested baby cot and bottle sterilizer were there when we get into the room after check-in. The missing strollers (free) was also delivered within 10 min after calling. No problem on room cleaning at all. We even requested for extra towels on the last day for our use after swimming.

Food - The breakfast is good with much variety. They realized that it would be crowdy on Sun (in fact Sat also) so they opened and extra venue (with notice to hotel guest the day before) to cater for the extra demand. Sorry that we don't eat in the hotel except breakfast which is included in the room charge and cannot provide much info here.

Facility - The swimming pool was great even our kids were too young (and we are too old - adult restricted) to play the slide. We enjoyed very much in the sallow water area of the pool. My boy had his first table tennis experience there and he had much fun there.

Conclusively, it is a great hotel for family. The hotel is a big old and no way luxury but that is not we are looking for.

Just came back last night from a week at the Rasa on Sentosa. Yes the rooms are in need of a makeover, however, everything else makes up for it. Stayed on a ground floor Garden suite where you have direct access to the pool, beach and garden areas which are all beautifully maintained and kept clean and the ground staff are all very warm and friendly. The room attendants are also very nice - nothing was too much trouble for them and our interconnecting rooms ( as I mentioned a little tired and in need of a makeover)were serviced daily with lovely clean linen and ample towel supplies. Check-in was an absolute breeze as was check-out with the desk staff very efficient , cheerful and helpful. We arrived very early in the morning and were most surprised to have our rooms all ready and waiting for our arrival which was very welcomed by us as we travelled overnight with two very tired children. The buffet was excellent with lots of variety for both breakfast and dinner and this is where the staff outdid themselves in making me, my children and grandchildren so welcome. always, always greeting us with a smile and making the little ones feel so special - it was a lovely touch. My grandson had a little acciden and bit through his bottom lip and management and staff were absolutely brilliant in making sure he was sell looked after medically and had a tray of goodies sent to his room for him when he arrived back from the doctors. They then called every day from then on to make sure he was ok and we were not in any need for any more assistance. I have absolutely no problems recommending this resort to families with children of all ages - from tots to teenagers - as there is always something for them to do. I would happily return with all my family and even with just my husband and myself and have a relaxing stay at this home away from home atmosphere. although not 5 star. was 5 star in our eyes.

This was our third time staying at the Shangri-La and we always enjoy it. Has clean, comfortable rooms, fabulous pool and fantastic staff. The children centre staff in particular are brilliant. Sentosa Island is a fabulous place to stay with children as there is so much to do - I did lots of stuff on my own with three children as my husband was working during the weeki. It is so easy to get around Sentosa and the staff at the Shangri-La were always on hand if I needed anything.
The only difference this time was the in-house band were not around as much in the evenings - they seemed to be at the restaurant (Barnacles) more than anywhere. This was a shame as before we have been able to sit with the children in the lounge bar and enjoy a drink whilst being 'entertained' by the band. The kids loved asking for a song.
But, all in all, this is a fab hotel that offers plenty for families.

My daughter and i stopped over in Singpaore on our way to Hong Kong and back. Both times we stayed at a Shangri La resort, The Traders Shangri- La in Singapore on the way over and the Rasa Sentosa Shangri La in Sentosa on the way back.
We arrived at the first one at 6am, after a night flight, very tiired we were allowed immediate check in and were not charged for the previous night. They also checked our departure flight time and organised check out to accomodate that time, again with no extra charge.
This makes soooo much difference besides the cost, you can relax at your hotel and leave just before your flight. You are not rushing out on your last day to be met at reception with loads of others doing the same thing.
A week later when we arrived at the Rasa sentosa, again the same thing on chcek in our departure flight details were noted and they advised a 3pm check out, no extra charge.
I think hats off to Shangri-la, for this sensible, fair and customer focused policy!!
In addition all the staff at both hotels were the friendliest Ive ever encountered.
From now on we wont be staying anywhere else!!
