“Shangri-la Rasa Sentosa Resort - Fantastic”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed October 17, 2007

My sister, myself and my daughter who is 2 years old stayed here from Oct 8 to Oct 11 2007 and we had a fantastic stay. We found the staff very attentive to our needs. Excellent place for a family and there is also quite a bit to do on the island. The bus stop was right outside the main gate to the hotel and the buses take you to whatever attraction you want to go to for free, even catching the express train to Vivo city was free, just ask for a travel pass at the hotel. I would definitely go back there again. My only concern about the kiddies pool with the waterslide is that it was very very slippery because of the type of tiles used in the pool.

  • Liked — Pool and food and attractions were close by
  • Disliked — slippery children's pool

5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed October 12, 2007

We have just returned today from Singapore, and I feel compelled to write a honest review about the Rasa Sentosa Resort, where we stayed for the majority of our trip. My sister lives in Singapore, and so our trip was mainly to catch up with her, but also to have a well earned break in a resort environment, catering for both our needs and those of our kids (aged 6 1/2, 3 and 11 months). We also wanted something that was within a cab ride to my sisters condo, yet had all the facilities we would expect from a resort.

We booked the Long Stay Package direct with the resort. This included 10% off Spa treatments, 20% off all food and beverage purchased at the hotel, and the Kids Club activities for free.

Quite obviously being an older resort, I had a few misgivings as despite visiting the resort personally in July for a day, I read a lot of bad reviews on Tripadviser and other review sites, so I felt it was at best a bit of a gamble. And what a fantastic gamble it turned out to be.

Yes, it took a long time to check in. Why are you in such a hurry anyway - you're on holidays or there for a conference. Sit and enjoy the waterfall and lush landscape outside reception, chat with your partner or associates. Chill ..

We were shown the room we booked (a Deluxe Seaview room) however felt that it was a little small for our whole family. These rooms are a normal hotel room size, but not quite big enough for us to be comfortable. Upon mentioning this to our reception assistant, she immediately showed us a Premier Deluxe room overlooking the pool and sea, with a massive paved terrace (and I mean absolutely massive - you could have had a party for 100 people up there LOL). This was great for the kids to run around on, but also, was in the sun for a few hours in the morning, so perfect if you are into sunbaking (Im not, it was very hot) and more mundanely, perfect for getting any washing dry!! This room was allocated to us for a very nominal extra charge per night (in Singapore $$, not AU), and it was well worth it.

Our room, whilst not inner city modern, nor super flash at first glance, was comfortable and accomodated us all very well. The older kids slept in a fold out double couch, we had a fantastic KING size bed, and bubs had a cot, supplied with fresh sheets every day, and an amenities pack including baby powder, shampoo, lotion etc etc. A lovely touch - very welcoming. Yes, there were a few things wrong with the room - the sliding door was hard to close, as were the wardrobe doors, and the pen holder was broken. And no the staff dont answer the phone always, but what the heck, ring back! Its not costing you anything. You're on holiday, get over it. Otherwise have some patience - its a big resort. Its certainly not a staffing issue, as there are masses of staff, and you need to realise that the staff there are paid a heck of a lot less that we are anyway. So that begs the question, why are they always smiling and happy, and we in Australia are generally so poorly serviced by grumpy Customer Service staff?

Which brings me to one of the highlights of our stay - the fantastic staff at the Rasa Sentosa. We could not fault them, truly. Being so used to bad service here in Australia, we were more than pleasantly surprised at the staff (from cleaner to manager) greeting us, their friendly conversation, their smiles, and genuine care to make sure our stay was wonderful. They loved the kids and our little bubs, and towards the end, even greeted us by name! You would not get that in Australia. No, I cannot say they were always super efficient or dealt with things as fast as we would have liked - but again, what do you care? You're on holidays - you're there to take things a little slower anyway .. and if you are there on business, I can tell you that we did attend the business centre only to use the internet a few times, and the staff there were super efficient and couldnt do enough for us.

The pool was fantastic, and the kids pools and three waterslides amazing. The pool bar served up the normal chips and burger fare, a bit expensive side but again, you're at a resort so you have to expect that anyway. Yes, beers and alchohol in general is expensive, but its expensive anywhere in Singapore - its highly taxed by the government to keep alchohol abuse down. Go elsewhere if you dont want to pay the resort prices - there are plenty of bars etc down the beach within a short walk. And Happy Hour from 6-8 was lovely - a band played for the first part and drinks were 2 for 1! Very relaxing.

The spa was lovely, and I have been there a couple of times now for treatments. Yes, its expensive - but we would pay the same here unless its Dial a Massage! The surrounds were beautiful, and my sister and I booked a private room which was very peaceful and included a spa and steam room. My therapist was extremely respectful and caring with me, and whilst I couldnt understand everything she said, I got the general idea. I havent been so relaxed for a very long time (mother of three kids, thats saying something!!!)

Breakfasts, whilst noisy unless you sat outside, were bountiful and provided every single type of breakfast food you could want (except weetbix, so bring your own or you can buy in the Vivo Giant supermarket). You could fill up for the whole day until dinner time! And we had dinner a couple of times in the resorts new "Barnacles" restaurant - again, a little expensive but the food is wonderful, and with the 20% off we got, it was no more expensive than a meal out here in Adelaide. The seafood was so fresh.

And the Kids Club was amazing. The staff there genuinely love kids, particularly the Entertainment Manager. They have a lot of patience, and are very friendly and interactive. It is for kids from age 5-12, and runs from 9 am to 6 pm each day. And they will take the kids for lunch, and an early dinner most days, all included. It was free for us on the package deal we paid for (not sure if it is however for other room rates). Our 6 1/2 year old begged to go there every day, and was constantly doing something interesting, or down by the pool or the beach, completely supervised and thoroughly enjoying himself. And because he was there, our 3 year old daughter was also able to attend the indoor sessions, which was fantastic for us as for example, we could drop the kids off in the morning for an hour, then have a leisurely breakfast with just bubs and ourselves to feed. Note that they are not big on sunscreen (I guess because they assume the kids are sun smart by age 5 anyway) so you just need to stress that before the kids go in the pool, they need to be reminded to pop their sunscreen on and put a hat on. No big deal though.

Taxi's were always available, in fact we got a Mercedes taxi a number of times!! The cab fare into the city from the island was a matter of dollars, to my sister around $12 on a normal day. So about $10 Au.

So in summary, no, its not a 5 star Shangri-la resort. Its not fast, new, gleaming or modern. Dont go there if you expect an inner city high efficiency hotel, bland decor and cloned staff. Its not what the resort is about. What makes up for the lack of panache is the beautiful, relaxing surrounds and slower pace of life, the friendly staff, the breakfasts, the Pool and the Pool bar, the super Kids Club and the Spa. My brother in law put it very well when he said its quite a good family resort, without being an in your face family resort (and he travels widely all over the world for business). I think it probably has something for everyone, just depending on your expectations. And if you expect glam, pay more elsewhere on the island, or stay in Singapore city.

For us, it was paradise and we are already planning our next trip back to visit my sister next year for a couple of weeks - and stay at the Rasa Sentosa of course!!!!

We had booked a deluxe sea-view room from 29 September to 1 October 2007. When we arrived after a day of travelling at 5pm, we were told that our room was not ready. We were offered a drink at the lounge, which was open and hence, hot and humid. We checked every 15 minutes if the room was ready, but was told they were cleaning it because of previous late check-out. We eventually got our room at 7pm - can you believe that? The only compensation we got was a bottle of red-wine (without opener) and a free dinner for 2 - which was not a good experience either as the dining room is not well airconditioned and very full.

The room we got was on the 11th floor - very nice room, with a balcony with a great view. Another good thing about this hotel is its proximity to the beach. However, since its pool area is open, non-hotel residents could easily use the swimming pool of the hotel.

On both mornings, we had to queue up for breakfast. There were many tourists on package holidays, and the place was very busy with screaming kids. No offence to family vacationers - but if you are a couple looking for a nice and romantic time on Sentosa, this hotel is certainly not for you - unless things are different during the week.

Overall, we agree with the previous reviews that this hotel is very family-oriented, but certainly not the choice for young couples without children, and the slow service certainly has lots of room for improvement.

  • Liked — The room and the view from the balcony
  • Disliked — The slow service, too many kids and package-tourists, poor air-conditioning of lounge and dining room

We had to queue for at least 15-20mins to check-in which i though it's a waste of time. When we got into our room, we realise the boiler flask is broken and leaking. Tried calling housekeeping, but no one ever picks it up. So we had to grab any hotel staff from the corridor. The quality of the hotel's service is absolutely terrible and unbearable. For the price that we are paying, I would say it's not worth it.

The cleaniness of the hotel was terrible as well, we had a open drain trap choked with tissue paper residue at the balcony. The hairdryer was an antique. It seems like they've been using since the day they started.

MARVELLOUS Mexican cuisine, Mariachi music, sensuous dancers were not the only thing I enjoyed here recently. Coupled with colourful Tequila Sunrise cocktails and ice cold Margaritas, I could play it cool the whole night and more! The views and ambience of this resort hotel are so good, it can make you de-stress in a few hours. Attentive service is always family friendly and the little children are made to feel really welcome. This is especially so in Trapizza, the unique beachside pizzeria where the kiddies can sit at special low tables, and actually make their own pizzas, under careful supervision, of course. The other outstanding feature, that I have not seen anywhere else in he world during my extensive travels as The Travelling Gourmet, a Travel, Food & Wine Writer/Editor, is...a real TRAPEZE! So diners can do a Burt Lancaster a la Hollywood imitation, and fly on the Trapeze. For the uninitiated, Burt lancaster was a real trapeze artist in a circus, before becoming a Hollywood leading man, and he used to make lots of movies with a Circus theme, where he would do in the movies what he did before in real life. I respectfully recommend that you do this trapeze act before dinner, for obvious reasons. The General Manager , Ben Bousnina, who is French, is one of the most jovial gentlemen I have ever had the pleasure of meeting, with a slightly mischevious sense of humour. Stay here soon when you visit Singapore, and you may not want to leave, especially after you enjoy a slice or two of freshly baked Pizza Quatro Stagioni (my personal favourite) with some robust and macho Barolo Italian wine, and watch the sunset over the island of Sentosa in the Ruby of the Orient that is Singapore.....By Dr. Michael Lim The Travelling Gourmet, a renowned Travel, Food & Wine Writer in Asia.

We were apprehensive after reading some poor reviews on TripAdvisor but were very pleasantly surprised. We stayed in the executive seaview rooms which were very freshly done up, with excellent aircon (some other reviews said the aircon didn't work). Rooms were clean and comfortable (a little small but most are these days). Great for kids - brilliant pool area.
Sentosa has loads of stuff to do. Overall we were pleased with our stay and would go back. May not be for honeymooners or people without children.

We stayed here for a long weekend. Sentosa is a great place for kids and this pool was the icing on the cake. We had ajoining rooms - a suite and a regular room with 2 twin beds and a pull out bed. The suite looked as if it had been redone but the regular room was a bit tired. My husband stays at different Shangri-La hotels in Asia so we were upgraded to this more deluxe suite. The patio off of both rooms had beautiful views and were a great place to have a relaxing drink at the end of the day or a coffee in the morning. The breakfast was good but very crowded. The other meals we had and room service were not very good - with the exception of Trapizza (pizza place on the beach) which was GREAT. They have 3 water slides that even a 2 year old could go on. My 10 and 7 year olds loved the slides although technically the 10 year old was too tall.

Sentosa has a lot to offer also. Do not miss going on the LUGE ride. You can get there by the complimentary beach shuttle. My kids loved it and so did we. There is also an aquarium across the street and you can go and swim with the dolphins (make reservation early though because we tried 2 weeks early and they were all booked.) We also took a taxi to Singapore's Night Safari which is also not to be missed!
