Discovery Shores Boracay
Ranked #5 of 152 Hotels in Boracay
Certificate of Excellence
Reviewed June 4, 2007

We recently went to Boracay and stayed in Discovery Shores. The place was recommended to us by a friend who frequents Boracay and has high standards in every aspect of a hotel stay. We went with 3 of our little toddlers.

We ABSOLUTELY LOVED the place!!! We were RELAXED. All i remember is my kids playing in the beach by the HUGE beach chairs in the shade all day long. the water was shallow so even my 2 yo could walk out pretty far. (depends on the weather and the wind) The sitting area has alot of trees so kids played so happily.

I'm not sure if this will be permanant but they constantly brought out complementary bandan drinks and sometimes ice cream and chicken skewers through out the day while we were on the beach. it was great because we were there the whole time with our little kids!

the transport from the airport to the hotel absolutely BEATS FRIDAYS. you don't need to think or do anything to get to Discovery. just show up with your bags and the Discovery ppl will find you and take you. if you were headed to fridays, you would have to catch a ride (and pay) and ride the crowded non airconditioned boat. each time you'd have to tip the bag people from one point to the next.

Part of the restaurant opens to the powdery beach so we let the kids run around while we ate. They do have the kids lunch menu. around 100php i think. not too expansive. breakfast was included in the $210 rate. and it was good. not GREAT or not POOR. i can't complain. kids were happy with the food. and we were as well.

the pool area could use alot of trees. it is just way too sunny to swim in the pool with sun shining directly down on you...

if you want some privacy i would ask for the upper area, which is far from the pool and the beach and would have to take the elevator. otherwise, ask for the lower deck.

There were some inconsistencies in service. my friends got foot massages. i didn't. my friends had "personal beach assistants" and i didn't. seemed that some were created with a traditional dancers, we weren't. i think basically if you go during the weekday when it's alot less crowded, you'll have a superb service. if on weekends, alot less.

nw, i would DEFINATELY go back. it was awesome.

I lurked in this forum for days, found it v helpful, so I thought I’d pitch in with a review. I hope this helps some of you.

Ours was a party of 4 last May 2007. Couple, 6y daughter, a sister. We stayed in a 1-BR suite, the daybeds served as beds. (Extra charges, but well worth it.) Room was v v nice, was v spacious even for us 4. The deep sink by the fridge was a pleasant surprise for washing swim suits, and so was the drying area. 2 closets, safety storage box can fit in our Thinkpad. iPod dock. Dining set was big enough for 4 in-room orders. 2 plasma TVs so no fights. Plush linen, beddings. Rain shower. Japanese-like sink with a small bench, great for our kid. We didn’t get to use DVD player and such.

Service was even better than room. (Was all "tipped" out.) Great shuttle service in Caticlan airport, efficient boat ferry complete with iced water and face towels! (Same type of service when we left.) Upon arrival, was met by smiles and refreshing pandan-lime shakes. Was led to our suite on the 2nd floor, upon which the nice guest officer noticed my bum ankle and showed us to another room on the ground level. Dining table was laden with freshly cut fruits of many kinds, all yummy. A canister of cookies also. Best of all, 2 carafes of iced water spiked with pandan juice. Super. On top of the bedroom, a sombrero, spray mist, sunblock. They didn’t forget thick towels for 4, comfy bathrobes for 3 adults, bedroom slippers for 3 too.

Staff kindly assisted us with all concerns such as shuttle service to D’Mall or elsewhere in the island, water activities, confirmation of return trip to Manila. In addition to usual daily room-cleaning, evening turn-down service. Nightly snacks for our group such as cream puffs and pavlovas. By the beach or pool, will be given complimentary raspberry iced teas! Carafes of water all day long, cold face towels to boot. Plush beach towels. Staff would (unnecessary often, welcome a few times) fold/sort our clothes placed in the sunbeds. Complimentary potato chips by the pool bar for kids.

Beach was “combed” several times a day, guard at bay for vendors. Overall look a bit concrete-y, needs more trees, but v v clean. Loved the automatic soap dispensers in the loos. Sunbeds bigger than usual.

So-so things? First, cuisine. Breakfast buffet was good, changed everyday with some staples. Loved the french-press coffee makers, ice-cold buko juice (in the buko!), watermelon shakes. But standard menus, evening buffet … limited, bland, sometimes overcooked. (Good thing shuttle to Aria and others was available.) Second, beach bar. So difficult to make use of, because under the sun. Third, few sunbeds as others have said. Was fine for Thurs/Fri, but come Sat/Sun, people were reserving sunbeds with books.

I was a bit concerned that some of staff, esp. cleaning staff and beach-duty folks were overworked. I hope Discovery Shores pays well.

Overall, pricey for Bora but not for Station 1, well worth it because of service, room, best beach in Bora. For meals, go elsewhere. Will go back in a minute if I could. (Too bad can't share photos, as file size too big.)

The other two reviews written so far about Discovery Shores are pretty spot on. I thought I'd add my two cents since this is a new hotel, and I looked at quite a few others before deciding to book here.

First of all, for those not familiar with Boracay (I wasn't before we went), there are three Stations: 1, 2, 3. Station 1 is the quietest by far, Station 2 the heart of the action, and Station 3 generally pretty crowded. Discovery Shores is on Station 1, a stroll (15-20 minute walk down the beach) from the D'Mall, a set of outdoor shops and restaurants that draws the crowds at night.

Discovery Shores is definitely the nicest hotel on Boracay. There really is no question about that - until maybe the Shangri-La is finished, but even then it will be on the other side of the island. The rooms at Discovery Shores, in my opinion, are fabulous. The beds are uber comfy, and the rooms very modern. Rain shower, plasma, etc all the other reviews have listed all the amenities but it really is top notch. As for the balconies, indeed they are not private. Though it was far too hot for me to sit on my balcony for any length of time anyway.

The food at the hotel is pretty average, unfortunately. I disagree about the breakfast buffet - I found a lot of choices for breakfast for Westerners and Asian alike. Lots of fresh fruit and an omelette station was fine for me. It was the lunches and dinners that I didn't like as much - some things we ordered were pretty good but on average, the food didn't match the quality of the hotel. Plus, it's a lot more expensive than eating anywhere else on the island.

As for the kids, it's true, there were a few when we were there and they did kind of take over the pool. The pool isn't so big so it's not that hard to dominate. And there are only 6 beds or so by the pool, which I found kind of sparse. The beds by the sea are very nice too, but it's also true that if the hotel is crowded, there won't be enough. But then, there was never a shortage when I was there and by that point they had opened all but the fanciest rooms (about 90% were open, I'd say).

There are a few service kinks they need to work out, but I assume this will happen in time. For example, they are not well coordinated at the restaurant (many people serve you and will give you different answers to the same question), and the front desk does not communicate well with the desk at reception where you're dropped off. However, everyone is very eager to please, and the staff is super friendly. I think I saw them doing training on a daily basis too, so this is even more reason to think the service will be Small Luxury Hotel worthy pretty soon.

In conclusion: I traveled to Discovery with my husband, who is typically the "saver" of the family. His opinion was that Discovery wasn't worth it compared to the deals you can get down the beach or even by renting an apartment (we met one guy who was staying on Boracay for a month for less than we paid per night at Discovery Shores). I consider(ed) it a bit of a splurge - a bit on the expensive side but overall a nice, comfortable time too.

If this hasn't convinced you, I hear Fridays, Sur and Waling Waling are all pretty nice. Those are the others I considered.

We've stayed for 4 nights at the Discovery Shores. Its absolut the most beautiful hotel on Boracay. Its brandnew and member of the Small Luxury Hotels of the World. The suites are very spacious and the interiour is very modern, but still native.... Flat-screen TV, I-pod, CD/DVD, Save, Alarmclock, everything is there..
But..... The suites have no privacy at all! If you want to relax on your balcony, you must count with the fact that everyone can see you.. You have to shut down the shades, if you want some privacy....
The breakfastbuffet for western guests is very poor! For Asian guests there's a lot to choose.... The service during the breakfast is chaotic, a lot of staff, but they aren't working very organized. If you order something, you have to wait a long time... I've had the feeling they did'nt had a overview(maybe because its a brandnew hotel???)
The beach is really one of the best I've ever saw! The staff and service on the beach is impeccable! Very friendly and they run for you! But....... The hotel has 88 suites, but only 26(!) sunbeds! So if you're a longsleeper, petty for you... No more sunbeds....

During our stay, there was a group staying from TELEDATA and they tought they owned the hotel! Unbelievable rude, loud and bold... And if you don't like children on your holiday, dont go to the DS..... They are pretty child-friendly hotel... They "take over" the whole pool, so If you want to make a swim.....use the sea!

At the weekend the DS has a Lounge/Club evening on the beach, a nice idea, but the music was so loud, you couldn't conversate with your direct partner... And at the same time(!) they had a live band at the poolside... So you heard, from two sides, very loud music.... We decided to leave the hotel for dinner at Fridays.....

But overall, the Discovery Shores is a very nice hotel for younger, more upperclass people with children.... The whole setup is very beautiful, the beach is breathtaking and peacefull! The staff is very friendly and helpfull. Despite the negative things, I enjoyed my stay at the DS!

this Hotel is brandnew..opened on the 20th of March 2007.

50% of all rooms are in operation, the others will follow by the end of April 2007. Their normal SPA is also not yet ready but they openend 3 nice rooms for their treatments.

This hotel is defintely the best in boracay at the moment.
Located at the best and quietest part of the white beach - next to Fridays....

It has a beachfront location with a lot of sunbeds and umbrellas right @ the beach in the middle of a few coconut palms. The waiters are taking care of everything when you're relaxing @ their sunbeds....cold towels, fresh fruits, icetea and fresh towels are available and will be brought to your sunbed without request.

breakfast is very very good..they are changing their buffett every day so ther's no change to get bored...Quality is outstanding...

The only small downpoint concerning the food is the location of the restaurant for dinner...It's not as nice as fridays where the tables are located in the sand before the restaurant...so Fridays has got a little bit more atmosphere if you want to have a very romantic dinner..just below the stars...
The tables @ discovery shores are placed inside the open restaurant - everthing looks faboulous - but for a romantic dinner I prefer a table in the sand outside the restaurant.

The rooms are defintely worth 6 -stars. Very large rooms with balcony, and a very big bed which is extremly comfortable.
LCD Monitor, DVD Player, Pioneer CD Player and Reciever, IPOD Dock - Fridge with Minibar, fresh fruits and some sweets everyday.
The room maid will take care of your clothes when you leave them hanging on a chair...Bathroom equipped with waterfall shower - towels changed 2 times a day if you wish - bathrobe, slippers are provided.

Airport transport is arranged by the hotel free of charge - same with transport on the island...they'll take you everywhere you like on the island, drop you there and collect you @ a pre arranged time without any further cost.

This newly built resort is definitely the best on borcay island in terms of service, design and luxury. It's designed in a very modern way so such guest looking for a native styled resort will definitely don't like the hotel.
Everything is new, everything is high tech but from my point of view it fits perfectly into boracay island. something other, something new....
If you like the minimalistic tech design, like I do, you will definitely have the time of your life.

Absolutely fabolous hotel! - 6 Stars!
