An overview: We were greeted by Mr. Vaughan Pratt himself, with a warm smile and cold drink. Despite the poor weather, the treatment we received from Vaughn and his staff was exceptional. We thought that our stay in this inn is going to be very nice, and how right we were.
The inn: My first thought was okay, the bar and restaurant needs a little fix as it shows signs of tiredness already. It has a traditional nipa hut design, nothing much to rave about, but we can feel being welcomed into the place. The place offers spa and diving packages, just ask them about their rates. Right on the beach front, they have small huts with beach chairs free for relaxing or watching the kiteboarding activities.
The room: We booked a Garden Room, initially we wanted the Ocean View room, but we are not disappointed at all. The lush garden is so beautiful, refreshing and quiet, we have no trouble sleeping at night at all. Each room has a veranda and if you just want to sit there and enjoy the garden view, you can do so with peace and quiet.
As for the room itself, it smelled like fresh linens when we arrived and very clean. There are two double beds, a mini ref, working aircon, cable tv, and a large wardrobe with safety box. The beds are okay, mattress is clean and the pillows are soft and plush. I immediately checked the toilet and bath, and no disappointment here, it was very clean albeit small, with rolls of tissue paper and complimentary soap. If you the type of person who cannot take a cold bath, then you need not to worry, the hot water supply seems to be ample for everyone in the room. The only downside I can think of is if you are a plus size person, you may find it difficult to move around the bathroom. Also, you may need to ask the front desk for extra bath towels. No phone in the room so you need to walk to the front desk for stuff that you may need. No big deal, it's not that far anyway.
The location: It was the next day when we realized that Station 3 is a bit far from the restaurants and bars in Station 1 and 2 so we need to walk about a kilometer to get there. But considering that Station 2 is where all the tourists converge, it tends to be noisy and crowded, so if you want a quiet escape at night, Station 3 is the a great location. We don't mind the long walk as there are many sights along the way so each walk is not boring. Another plus is there are almost to no hawkers at all. There is only one hawker I have encountered right in front of the inn so it was not so bad compared to the hawkers swarming in and around Station 2. This is also the location where kiteboarders go to so if you want learn or just watch them zip through the air, this is the right location.
The food: Breakfast is included but limited to pancakes, waffles and toasts. Huge servings of breakfast, but again, limited. It will be very nice if they can offer Filipino breakfast too. However, like all the other hotel restaurants in Boracay, a meal would be around Php350-500, which is expensive for us. Good thing the inn allows food and drink inside so if you are traveling on a tight budget, it will be better to buy lunch from cheap restaurants and have it to go (we recommend Smoke Restaurant located near D'Mall and Hey Jude resort, and Chicken Inasal in D'Mall).
The staff: When we were having a little chit-chat with Vaughn and some of his staff, we instantly felt that we are home. They always have a smile and very informative too. Don't be shy asking them for things you need, if they have it, they will give it. If they don't, they will tell you where to get it. Another plus is they helped us get to Caticlan port where we took a van going to Kalibo. Vaughn asked one of this staff (we forgot his name, sorry) to take us to Tabon port where he took care of everything from paying the fees to assisting us with our baggage until we reached Caticlan port. He even took us to where the vans to Kalibo are located. This is a huge plus in their service for a small amount of fee.
The amenities: Well, no swimming pool or fitness gym, but who needs a pool if you have the long stretch of white beach right in front? And if you need exercise in the morning, no need for treadmills. Just walk all the way to Station 1, or if you are up for the challenge, walk to Station 4. Strong and fast wireless internet is available but weak signal inside the room. If you don't have a laptop or smartphone with you, there are two desktop computers in the lobby. Another huge plus for tech savvy guests.
The rundown: Backpackers and young couples will enjoy Blue Mango Inn for its simplicity and warm hospitality, thrown with great service. Families with young kids and elderly might find the location a bit far from the central hub but they can ask for transportation assistance from the staff or take the trikes on the main road. For the super cheap price, the place is a great value for budget travelers and those who would not compromise quality service for discount fees.
