It is undergoing construction but its ok. Free breakfast is basic, you can add-on for a good price. Most of the staff are really nice. Fruit shakes are really good and affordable, the restaurant outside is affordable too. Rooms are clean and the staff are efficient. We will go back to this place definitely.

El Centro Beach Resort is not 5-star but it is perfectly adequate accommodations. We stayed 3 nights in a room for 4 with 2 breakfasts included. The room was spacious, as was the bathroom. The air conditioning worked very well and we even had a refrigerator and electric fan in the room. There was also a veranda for smoking and hanging wet clothes to dry off. But there was construction right outside the veranda so it wasn't a pleasant place to hang out. I'm guessing construction will be done by peak season.

Choices for breakfast were limited and alarmingly basic (example: tapsilog without the tapa so essentially egg and fried rice) but they let you accumulate your breakfasts over the duration of your stay giving you the option to eat out/sleep in without losing anything.

As for location, it's only a few steps away from the beach (Station 2) and has a couple of lounge chairs set up for guests' use.

We never got our room cleaned so I can't comment on that. But they handled our requests for ice and water promptly.

Bottomline: Clean, complete and close to the beach without being expensive.

First of all, let me say that this is a review of the NEW El Centro. Gone is the old El Centro that everyone who's been to Boracay before the tourism boom remembers -- cottages by the beach, hammocks outside the rooms, etc. The resort is now one the second floor of a building that's located right beside the old El Centro.

ROOMS

We got the family room at a pretty decent rate (PHP5,000 - more or less $110), considering the resort's location. The room was new, clean and pretty big - about sixty square meters. It was good for eight people, but I think it could have easily fit twelve to fifteen provided there are extra mattresses.

The downside though is that it only had one toilet and bath (separate rooms), so it makes you'll have to schedule using them if you're a big group.

NOISE

Unlike the old El Centro that had cottages, the rooms now all have tiled floors and concrete walls. The corridor outside the rooms is a bit narrow, and it also has tiled floors. The reason I mention the tiled floors a lot is because they get slippery when wet (and they often are, considering the occupants frequently come from the beach). The other issue with tiled floors and narrow concrete corridors is they trap noise very well. So when you have excited yuppies or upset babies walking outside, you're sure to hear them inside your room.

In terms of noise, there's also the music from Seabreeze cafe that can be heard from the room every night from six to nine. Since the rooms are in the second floor and the flat pane windows face the beachfront, there's nothing to get between the room and whatever noise is in the beach.

Good thing everybody in our group sleeps like a log. But if nighttime noise is something you're sensitive to, this hotel may not be a good idea for you.

LOCATION

The new El Centro, like the old one, is right at the geographical center of Borcay Island (hence the name). It's at the beachfront of Station 2, so you get right in the middle of things the moment you step out. This is good if what you want is easy access to the beach, restaurants, bars, etc; bad if what you want is peace and tranquility.

FOOD AND SERVICE

Food was so-so. It was usual Filipino dishes, unremarkable but cooked well enough. For the prices though, I can't really complain (PHP100-PHP150 per dish).

Service was decent. The guy who cleaned our room did it very well and very quickly, although he didn't seem very happy about it. The front desk people were helpful and nice.

Overall, still pretty good for me. Although it has its fair share of faults, it's the kind of faults that don't matter to me, my wife or my kids. And the affordable rate they charge for a large, clean room by the beach is enough to keep me coming back.

Traveled November 2012 with my wife, three kids and two nannies.

I am a regular at this hotel. A family owned business not heavily advertised. They've had the same staff for a decade, so they are very consistent. Clean and friendly. Breakfast is plain, but you can add on. There is no restaurant, but they have a shake stand where you can put fresh fruit (and beer) on your hotel bill as well as post cards and sundries. It is truly in the center of everything happening in Boracay. Almost to a fault as Boracay gets busier you might want a back room where you can get away from the noise and the bustle. No pool, but it's on the beach. Very reasonably priced. I've always walked in during Peak season and got a room. In fact your best rate is a walk in rate. They are more flexible when you are standing in front of the desk with your suitcase and cash then on the internet with a credit card. You don't need reservations unless you go during what they call Peak Peak (or Holiday season). Nigi Nigi Nuu Nuu's is only a couple of doors down for the rest of your meals and the best Happy hour. D'Mall is close too. Say hi to No-No at the front desk and Jonny (security-bell man-concierge). Rooms are recently remodeled and clean. The one down side is watch out during rainy season. June 1st or 2nd, a storm blew through and flooded the pathway to the back of the hotel (not the rooms), so they upgraded us to the front free. This is not a concern except from June to Sept.

Room Tip: the back rooms are quieter

If you are considering this resort simply because it's beachfront and affordable, forget it. There are a lot of BETTER options. Their receptionists just stare and don't even greet you upon arrival. Even the owner who was seated at the hallway when we arrived.

We were supposed to be confirmed in a family room for a 2-night stay in this resort but upon check-in, we were turned down as the family room can accommodate 7 persons only (we were a group of 8). The owner even interrupted and told us to get another room. We asked if we can get an extra bed for the extra person (at an additional charge) to which she retorted "of course not, you won't fit in the family room!!". It felt like they were refusing our business and they did not even bother to offer an alternative. We even could have confirmed the 2nd room if only the owner was more accommodating. We could have ignored the rude receptionist but the owner?!

This Mrs Tirol should get a basic course in customer service. Any person in the hospitality business know that you don't just turn down a potential customer. You should be polite enough to offer alternatives. When Mrs Tirol was asked what she can suggest she just said " I don't know with you! You should have your own decision!". When in fact we were the ones misinformed. These people did not advise us that they cannot accommodate 8 persons upon booking.

We could have confirmed the 2nd room as we understand that each hotel/resort has their own policy but because of the owner's appalling behavior, we decided to book else where. You can get a better resort that's also beach front with better rooms and better facilities (they dont have a pool).

El Centro's only saving grace is that they're beachfront. Other than that, it's not worth the trouble.
