“Lovely hotel but too secluded”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed January 5, 2011

This is a beautiful hotel, with it's own amazing beach. The problem is that when you leave the hotel, you have to go to the very touristy D'Mall. The rooms are expensive, and food at the hotel quite pricey. Also the only way to get there is to fly to caticlan and the staff will take you over in a speedboat. It would be perfect for people who just want a lazy holiday anddon't want to leave the hotel.
They do have a shuttle into and out of D'Mall. Staff are brilliant, no complaints about the actual hotel. The swimming pool is sensational, and hot rock heated with little bubble beds scattered throughout.

We were here for a week just after New Years. Hotel is 100 % full with mainly a Russian feel to the place. Our expectation was that the Shangri La would be exclusive and exemplify a world class service level....oh how we were wrong.

On check in. We arrived at 5.30 pm and told our room was not going to be available until 7.30pm. No complimentary drink, no sincere apologies...nada.

The poolside/beachside restuarant and bar. This was the worst part of the hotel. A total joke. You wait anywhere upto 30mins for a simple drink. They NEVER stock any diet or light drinks, even though they advertise this. There are literally upto 20 people behind the bar sometimes. No one knows what they are doing. Shangri La should be totally ashamed of this and fire the entire food and beverage group. We saw atleast 30 different couples complaining every single day.

The SPA - the prices are astronomical compared to other hotels of the supposed standard level.

The plus - food and drink is cheap compared to a US hotel. The location is good. But if the hotel is busy they run out of sunbeds and chairs.

Overall this hotel is a complete failure. We stayed here for our honeymoon and were totally disappointed and at sometimes disgusted with this hotel.

Fantastic views, friendly staff, private beach and excellent swimming pool. A great combination for a truly relaxing and wonderful Christmas vacation. I've been to Boracay before, but this experience was truly one of a kind - from the reception at Caticlan port, to the arrival at their private dock, to the view of the beach on your room's balcony. They also have their own shuttle van to bring you to the town and back. And to go from place to place within the resort - you don't have to walk (you are, after all, too relaxed in this environment). Just call reception and there will be a buggy waiting for you to take you wherever you want.

My only suggestions for improvement are on their food and beverage (breakfast buffet, especially the Philippine cuisine, was great - others were disappointing) and coordination among their staff - especially the front desk. They are very friendly and accommodating, but effective communication among themselves and to guests can still be improved. For example, Christmas mass was advised to us by various staff to be on the 25th, when it was held on the 24th. Needless to say, we missed it and had to go to church in the nearby town.

Despite this, I would go back there in a heartbeat. I'm sure that these will be rectified; once that happens, this place will truly be "Shangri-la".

Shangri-la Boracay is a huge property with a small private beach and an inviting pool. The rooms are spacious and charming (but you can go all out and get a villa if you feel like it). For some peace and quiet, pick this resort since it is not on the main beach (White Beach) where all the action happens. Shang offers free shuttle service if you do want to go to the main beach (approximately 10-15 minutes away) so no worries. If you're taking a tricycle from the main beach to Shang (or vice versa), it's going to set you back PHP 120.

Now on to the point of my review -- The best thing about Shang Boracay is its staff. Fantastic, I tell you. Each one of the employees has mastered Customer Service 101. Always smiling, always willing to help, just impressive. For instance, when I realized I lost the key that would open my jurassic luggage, they sent over someone with this thingamajig intended for forcing locks open (I guess I wasn't the first one). Another example was when we were running late for our boat ride back to Caticlan, this lady from the front desk actually went ahead and drove us to the port (via buggy) so we could catch our trip.

As for budget, be prepared to shell out some moolah if you're staying here during peak season (summer and holidays). During the rainy months of June to October, however, rates go down to about 50% off the regular price. Room rates are usually inclusive of boat transfers (speedboat, weee!) and buffet breakfast at Vintana (wide variety, but nothing super spectacular).

Last thing, the main beach is still wayyyy better than Shang's private beach. Take this into consideration before booking.

this is our 3rd night staying at this new wonderful resort and guess what...my wife has been complaining about not being able to take a hot shower for the past 7 hours....the hotel sent an "engineer" to test our room water and after his assessment, he expertly asks after turning on the shower water "isn't this hot?"....the water is actually lukewarm....we call the manager on duty Carlos Vega a few hours after and he advises us that the problem is actually with the boiler and they are working to fix this. it was very odd that the engineer was unaware of this 3 hours before and peculiar that nobody at the hotel failed to advise us of the problem before our having to call the manager....would I ever come back to this hotel...ZERO for service....

I value TA's reviews and so I owe it to the readers to give my opinions as well.
Travelled with my 6 year old son and family for 3d/2n in late November. local's rate turned out to be 12k a night for a deluxe room.

From Caticlan, a van took us to the Shangrila lounge at the jetty port where we were given lemonade and some cookies. From there, our luggage was tagged and we took a convenient speedboat ride to the resort (10 min as opposed to the 20 min ride on a normal banca) From Shang's port, the hotel manager Mr. Kirk greeted us and a golf cart took us to the open air lobby. Check in was 2 minutes long and we were led to our rooms. We requested for ground floor rooms.

Rooms were clean, bathroom was huge with 2 sinks, a nice tub, a rainshower, separate toilet and l'occitane toiletries. Nice themed room, a mini porch, a mini sofa inside, nice tv, robes, slippers, and down pillows. Beds were firm and duvets were soft and lovely :) The towels were nice, white, and thick and smelled good!

Breakfast is ample, the choices are not so large but we enjoyed the crispy bacon (at request) and yogurt.

Beachfront does not have the same quality of sand like that of the main island's but the pools are beautiful. There are 3 pools with many cabanas or lounges. The hotel area is huge and we did not get to explore everything sadly. The place is really beautiful...

The adventure zone for kids was excellent, huge space where my son enjoyed so much. Just be sure to bring socks, so you don't have to buy from them. They gave my son a towel and bottled water when they saw he was sweaty. The girls/nannies were nice, energetic, and spoke in straight english :)

My family had some gripes during the short stay:
1. The staff can be a pit pushy especially in asking you to sign your breakfast check. Usually, you sign it at the end of your meal but they give it to you within 5 minutes of sitting down and bug you to sign it.
2. The free shuttle service to D'mall or the main island is not as often as you would like it to be. There's one at 11 am, 1pm 3, 5, 7 and 30 minutes after that until 9. Last service is at 10 so after 10 you better look for another ride going back. You can request but it gets pricey at 500 pesos per ride. A trike would take you for 100 pesos.
3. The food at poolside and ventana (cafe) had large servings but were not very tasty. Of course they're at least 500 pesos but you could find cheaper alternatives at the other island. Room service (sinigang) was large but again not very tasty.
4. My son got a fever on first night and I asked for a digital thermometer. A nurse came by very quickly but only had an analog thermometer and no child med available like paracetamol. Luckily, my siblings were at D'mall and so they were able to buy from the drugstore.
5. Kayak or water sports are not free. 600 for kayaking for an hour. Kiddie lifevests are available too.

Despite the gripes, I would still come back :)

A good 5 star beach resort and hotel. Modern and large and so not to everyone's taste. Rooms are clean, large, and of a high standard. Restaurants also very good. Prices are high and so value for money is only average; as you would expect good quality at such a high price. Service levels are good and staff are willing and friendly but not as well trained or managed as you would expect. managers are seldom seen! Beach is very nice and diving school is also very very good. The hotel is a little far away from the more lively town and beach resorts in station 1 and 2 - but taxis/tuk-tuks are cheap and easy to find and take 10 minutes to get to town. In summary, you would need to be very fussy to not enjoy a holiday at this hotel.
