Review of Tubbataha Reef

Also the second time there it was great diving. We saw many sharks, white and black tip reef sharks and grey reef sharks but also barrakuda, big schools of jackfish, turtles, manta rays, marble and blue spotted rays and even a whaleshark. The corals are in perfect condition. Especially the huge sea fans and sponges are very impressive. However, it's a place for experienced divers. Currents can be strong and unpredictable and all dives are wall dives. Visibility was 15-20 m, sometimes better. From Puerto Princessa to Tubbataha it's a 12 h boat ride and often quite a rough one as it is open sea. So be prepared with anti sea sickness medication. This time we went with the Philippine Siren. The boat is quite comfortable, cabins are really nice and spacious but there is not too much shaded area to relax between the dives and it is rolling heavily in rough waters. Diving was well organized, the crew very nice and helpful.

I don't like to exaggerate but believe me when I say this in all honesty, no exaggerations. This is THE BEST dive site in the world. After you see Tubbataha, you'll never want to dive anywhere else again.

I have been to a lot of beaches and yet I had never seen such vibrant underwater colors! Fishes I have only seen on tv or on books were there swimming around...really amazing!!! This is where I realized that we really should protect the seas and preserve such beauty.

For the serious recreational scuba divers who are looking for the best dive, Tubbataha should be in their short list of places to dive. Sharks, pelagics, turtles are the common attractions of Tubbataha and sometimes whale sharks are sighted. The atoll is 80 miles from the nearest land, so underwater visibility can be spectacular. Walls all around, most, no all dives are wall dives. Sharks can be seen stalking jacks and turtles in shallows. Above water, the bird island is simply awesome teeming with boobies and other birds. The season for Tubbataha is summer time (Philippine summer that is). Live aboard cruises starts about March with last cruise at about end of May or June, depending on the onset of the southwest monsoon. Underwater attractions are guaranteed but divers should diligently choose the dive boat to completely enjoy the Tubbataha trip.

I went to this world class dive site twice in my more than 10 years of diving here in the Philippines and i dont think words are enough to describe this amazing dive site. Ive dove in most major dive sites here in the Philippines and this is still the ultimate dive site.

This site can only be reached by liveaboard and is only available from March till june. The best time to go here is during the month of April. There are several dive operators and local groups that offer chartered live aboards to this destination. Reservations usually start as early as november and december. Prices may vary depending on the type of boat using and can vary to 4 diving days to 5 diving days. Meals are also included usually 5 buffet meals a day and the dive service is excellent.

For those divers out there here is what we saw during my first trip...imagine seeing all of these in 4 diving days: Whale shark (yes we were extremely lucky to encounter one of these gentle giants in one of our dives), hammerhead sharks, manta ray, eagle ray, and marble ray. Black tip reef sharks and turtles are virtually guaranteed on every dive that it gets to be boring, huge school of jacks and barracudas and the list goes on. Visibility during the month of April is a clear 45 meters. Another draw to this dive trip is the camaraderie with local divers during breaks between dives. You get to swap stories over beer during evenings after the last night dive. (i would highly recommend taking a night dive here...nothing beats the thrill of seeing a shark swimming around you at night and trying to find out where it went) The rule for most divers who travel here (at least for us) was max out your air...virtually every diver in our group consumed the whole tank since the dive here is absolutely breath taking. Btw some operators even provide photo and video services for your trip here. You have the option to purchase the dvd at the end of your trip and virtually every single diver is featured in the disc.

Here is the link for the dive site http://www.tubbatahareef.org/?page=home

To any divers who plan on visiting this amazing dive site and needs more info dont be shy about sending me a msg regarding any question and i would be more than happy to help you to the best of my ability.
