“Beachfront but not swimmable.”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed November 14, 2012

Location: It is beachfront, but the beach has alot of mangroves so you don't want to swim in such a muddy beach. Because it is near still waters, there is a lot of mosquitoes. You will see alot of their staff trying to kill these flying creatures using an electric swatter.
Pool: Their pool is basic but nice.
Lounge: Offers great wifi and free flowing milk and coffee.
Reception: Did a great job for our tours and daily activities. They are very accommodating and will give you a free shuttle service to any place you want in the vicinity.
Rooms: Tidy and pleasant. Comfy beds and pillows.

Thanks for scoring us 4 out of 5. Thank you also for finding our rooms tidy and pleasant, our beds and pillows comfy, our staff efficient and accommodating, and our pool nice, albeit basic. I'm also glad you appreciated our free wifi, free coffee, and free shuttle service.
Quite frankly, though, I'm a bit confused why you say we have a muddy beach because of all the mangroves. Mangroves do not necessarily need soil to grow -- they are equally abundant along sandy beaches as along muddy riverbanks. I can categorically state that our beach is NOT muddy at all. Perhaps you were recalling a different beach, given that it's been almost a year before you chose to post a review.
Same with the mosquitoes -- we've never had any major problems with mosquitoes, and definitely have not found it necessary to use an electric swatter to try and kill them. We DO advise our guests to use insect repellent when going outdoors because sandy beaches are the natural habitat of sand flies -- tiny, almost invisible, insects whose bite can be an inconvenience. We've managed to keep our beachfront relatively sand fly-free, not through the use of electric swatters (which would be inutile against them), but through regular, old-fashioned, beach-combing.
Hope this clears things up a bit. Again, thank you for taking the time to post a review and we look forward to welcoming you on your next visit to Puerto Princesa City.

The hotel was clean, comfortable and spacious. however, i would not say that this is beachfront. the sprawl of land at the back is a mangrove and I would hardly classify that as beach... most of the days it would be a bank of sea bottom. Good for walking around, picture taking and picking up bottom dwellers with your kids. It would still be a good place to lounge around, but if you expect swimming and wadding at the beach, forget it... take a dip in the nice pool instead and save the beach swimming for Honda Bay or such. The location is pretty much out of the way from everthing else since it's tucked away somewhere at the back, hence the mangrove backyard... but they can offer you drop off and pick up service without charge to major attractions (unless it's way off the hours of their operation). Food was good and pretty reasonable though the kitchen closes at 10 so stock up with some snacks in case you or your kids gets the munchies in the middle of the night. Staff were friendly and very attentive. They were also very helpfull to assist you in getting around. I would stay again considering their rates offer good value for money.

Room Tip: Schedule your tours in advance since the hotel is not accessible from the main road

Thanks for taking the time to write a very helpful review. It's nice to know that you found our hotel clean, comfortable and spacious and that you appreciated our free scheduled shuttle service to and from the City, the good restaurant food, our friendly and attentive staff, and our value-for-money room rates.
A lot of our guests also appreciate the fact that while the restaurant does close at 10pm, they can bring in food from outside or have them delivered to the resort, with no extra charges or corkage fees! We also have a limited selection of food and drinks available at the Front Desk, for those craving for a little midnight snack.
About the beach: and yes, it is a beach -- one that is subject to high and low tides, just like any other beach. The only difference here is that the beach slopes gently and there are no sudden drops so the high and low points of the tide can seem very far apart. One good thing about it is, as you mentioned, kids can have a nice time exploring the beach during low tide and, during high tide, they can wade, swim or kayak through the mangroves safely since the water is shallow enough even for toddlers to play in. There is virtually no danger from undertows or huge waves.
One factor that has contributed immensely to the conservation of Palawan's rich marine and terrestrial biodiversity is its successful protection and conservation of its mangrove forests. As such, we take great pride in our location by a beautiful mangrove beach, one that affords our guests spectacular views of the sea and one of the most stunning sunrise panoramas I've ever seen, even if one has to wake up early to see it.
Ahem. Sorry if it got a bit too long-winded back there. Anyway, no visit to Puerto Princesa City is ever truly complete without visiting Honda Bay. Guests can go island-hopping from one beach-fringed islet to another, each offering unique sights and attractions. We advise our guests to tell the boatman to take them to Pambato Reef -- the snorkeling there is excellent! Lots of interesting corals and colorful fish. Our Guest Services Desk can provide other information on what tours and activities are available in the City and help our guests make the most of their vacation to Puerto Princesa City.
Thank you very much for choosing to stay in Microtel Puerto Princesa and we look forward to welcoming you again on your next visit!

Pros- the service was great! Staff was friendly and professional at the same time. THey have a shuttle to anywhere in the city- drop off and pick up; coffee service and mini bar in the rooms, tea service in the lobby, wifi in the lobby, breakfast included in the package we got
Cons - the breakfast is much to be desired: vegetables swimming in butter, dry bread, small servings of omellete (the beef tapa was good though, and they serve different dishes daily) the hotel is not really beachfront like the photos show, there is a sandbar in front of thr hotel where you can walk for a kilometer or more before you hit the water (but the area is very picturesque)
There wasn't any tea available in the breakfast or in the rooms but you can get some bags in the lobby if you want to (I discovered this on Day3 of our stay!). It was far from the city but they did compensate by having shuttles available.. They even rented out just to accomodate the guests!

Overall, I would still go back And I would recommend to it my friends.

Thanks for taking the time to post a review of Microtel Puerto Princesa here in Trip Advisor! We're glad that you found the staff to be professional yet friendly at the same time, and that you appreciated the free shuttle service we provide for the convenience and safety of all our guests.
We have noted your comments regarding the breakfast and have informed our concessionaire accordingly.
Regarding the beach -- I'm no meteorologist, but we've observed that high tide usually comes twice a day. During Amihan (northeast monsoon) season though, it goes down to one long period of high tide and the rest of the day it's low tide. The tide schedules change daily, usually moving back one hour everyday so if today high tide comes at 12 noon, tomorrow it will be at around 11am, and so on and so forth. It's not a hard and fast rule, though.
The Weather Forecast we post daily at the Front Desk is there to inform our guests of the tide schedules and prevailing weather forecast for the week so they can plan their activities accordingly.
We are grateful for your recommendation and we look forward to welcoming you again here in Microtel Puerto Princesa!

Microtel staff was very welcoming and nice. The hotel was 25 minutes away from the airport and main city of Puerta Princesa, but close to the Hunda Bay and Underground River tours. The lagoon in the back was a nice view that you wouldn't get if you stayed in the main city's hotels. Don't expect to swim in the lagoon as the water receeds during the day and doesn't reach the hotel until evening. Breakfast is average. The rooms are modern and spacious. The standard room had 2 double beds, large shower, and room for 4. The only thing I didn't like at all is the road into the hotel. It is very rough. I don't understand why they haven't paved it because it is horrible.

It was a great decision for us to choose to stay in microtel for our 4 nights stay in Palawan with my family. The staff was very accommodating and assisted us in all our concerns. The location is quite far from the hustle and bustle of the city but is complimented by a great view of the sea, mangrove, and swimming pool that my kids enjoyed. The location is ideal for us since we don't need to go out of the hotel just to spend bonding time together as a family. The food at senordamla was great but we hope that kid's meal be offered in the future. We also appreciate the assistance provided to us for our tours in PPUR and Honda bay. The beds were great and rooms always made up. The hotel really provided us a time to rest, to enjoy Palawan and bond with my family. Thanks a lot!

I'm glad to hear that you and your family had a great stay in Microtel Puerto Princesa. Parents, especially of young kids and teens, appreciate our location which is far enough from the City to provide a safe, calm and relaxing atmosphere close to nature, but still conveniently near all the best restaurants, souvenir shops, museums and tourist destinations that the City has to offer. Best of all, the beach is shallow enough, even during high tide, to be safe even for toddlers and preschoolers while still allowing adults to enjoy activities such as kite-boarding and kayaking. Our Guest Services Desk can also arrange scuba-diving, snorkeling, and fishing activities for more adventurous guests. There's really a lot of opportunity for family-bonding moments here in Microtel Puerto Princesa! (PS -- we've asked Senordamla to expand their menu to include kiddie meals and you can expect to see these included in the menu upon your next visit. Thanks for the suggestion.)

But boy oh boy, the beachfront is nothing spectacular really.
I would be better off staying in a city hotel with a pool.

Price is on the average considering the amenities, but that is all there is to it.

There are many inns around the city that could very well give you shelter after a day of doing touristy things.

Will stay in other places next time. Once would really be enough for the experience.

If budget is a problem and you only need a place to sleep, there are a number of good tourist inns and pension houses in the City we could refer you. Thanks for your review.
