Duchess Pension
Ranked #94 of 199 Puerto Princesa B&B and Inns
Reviewed October 31, 2011

I am a Television News/Programming Producer and Consultant and my works brings me occasionally to Puerto Princesa. I know a great deal when I see one, after staying in other Puerto hotels. The Duchess is my home, when I am here. It is well run and tidy, with a very nice staff, who remembers me. It means allot to me, that the staff didn’t forget who I am. I like the quiet, neighborhood location, only blocks for major retail and restaurants.

What I always notice here, is the constant facility improvements that never seem to cease at the Duchess. They are always improving something from new flooring to painting, and adding new plants to the garden. Now, they are putting in a couple of big saltwater aquariums, in the garden area for guests to be able to enjoy some of Palawan’s marine life.

What is interesting to me about the aquariums is that they are totally natural. The sand, corals and saltwater was brought from sea. The saltwater filtered through a coral filtering system. Can’t get much more natural or eco friendly than that.

One thing I noticed on this site, were some pictures of the Duchess, apparently submitted by another guest, some time ago. I thought it might be useful to my fellow travelers to provide updated photos of this nice, little family owned hotel. I am not a great still photographer (Much more adept with video), but everyone should get the idea.

I have stayed in other hotels in the Province, but I always take up residence here, because I feel the most comfortable. PS for American Visitors: Pension means small or little hotel….not a retirement facility!

this pension house is really budget friendly. we stayed here for 4 days and 3 nights. during our stay, we never had a problem specially with our tours because the staff were dependable. good working A/C, enough water supply, good breakfast and fast responses of the receptionist. In this pension, you will have the service you paid for.

I like to consider myself well traveled. I have stayed at everything from a Guest House, to a Bed and Breakfast to a five star property, during my travels. I accidently found a more than reasonably priced Puerto Princesa Pension (means small) Hotel, in the Philippines Province of Palawan.

The Duchess is a cozy, clean, more than an affordable hotel, with a friendly and helpful staff. The Staff can set up day trips to the world famous Underground River (competing now to be one the Seven Natural Wonders of the World), Island Hoping and meet you at Puerto Princesa Airport, if you want.

I was amazed at Duchess’s prices. Singles for 250Pesos per day (about $6 American) and 350 (about $8 USA) for a double. That is a great deal, given what else I have seen in Puerto.

They had numerous breakfast offerings, most for 100 (Just over two bucks) Pesos or cheaper. They were full meals with coffee. I was impressed with the food and the great prices.

I got pancakes for 50 Pesos, or just over one buck. This is a wonderful place to stay and I will be back. It is located in a nice part of town and walking distance of two indoor markets and tons of retail. I don’t think there is a better deal, in town.

Puerto offers everything from eco tourism to natural wonders. It is a great place with diving, zip lines for the adventurous, plus butterfly and bird watching. The beaches are nice and clean, just like this almost totally crime free city. A trip to the Underground River and Honda Bay is a must.

I highly recommend Puerto Princesa and the Duchess, which is a well run, pleasant, tidy and comfortable family owned hotel.

Stayed here for 3 days 2 nights.. Had a room good for 6 pax for P1200 per night.. It was really practical to have the package they offer as well.. Had a good time w/ the funny and cool tourist guide, Kuya Albert.. The package we got included Honda Bay Island Hopping w/ cost P1100/pax and P1500/pax for the underground river.. The place had the necessities we needed, towels, hot & cold shower and breakfasts for 3 days.. Duchess is on the town proper and you can easily hire a tricycle if you want to have the city tour... We'll definitely go back there if we visit Puerto Princesa agin..

It took two weeks via email and txt to arrange everything with these people. Even after I sent the deposit money, I couldn't get them to confirm my reservation for 5 days. I just had to go there and cross my fingers that everything was ok. And it was.

You get what you pay for, the room is lackluster and just has the basics (unless you pay more for tv or internet). They did have a towel, soap, and tp, which was a plus since those things are never guaranteed in the PH. The water heater did not work except for a token amount of heat, which was fine really as it was enough to make the water pleasant, if on the cold side. We arranged a trip to Honda Bay and the Underground River with them and all went smooth and well - except for one morning when they forgot to make us the breakfast we ordered the night before, making us 15 mins late.

The place is worth P700 (it's actually rather nice for that price), and it's clean enough for a few days stay, so I'd stay here again and I would recommend it to others. If not for bad communication, it would have been great.
