Stunning Republic Beach Resort
Ranked #16 of 123 Specialty Lodging in El Nido
Reviewed June 24, 2014 via mobile

My girlfriend and I stayed here 4 nights. We had one of the two rooms that have a sea view (D1, D2), and the views are indeed incredible. It being the low season it was very quiet and relaxing. The restaurant area was undergoing renovation but it didn't much bother us.

The place is south of the main town area and it's not walkable. We took a trike each way for 40 pesos and it's not as much of a hassle as you might think since they are everywhere and easy to get. For us, the fact that it was out of town was a bonus because it was much more quiet and away from the business of El Nido (even during the low season - I can't imagine what the high season is like..).

There are three reasons for the missing fifth star. For one, the service was good but inconsistent, particularly in the 'restaurant'. The front desk was very accommodating and constantly tried to make sure we have rides and tours (didn't use the latter, but was available to us) and was helpful in answering most questions. The rest of the service staff... less so. The meals took forever to come out, 20-30 min was common even tho we were the only ones eating there) and although they would bring them to our patio, half the time they wouldn't clean after (twice we came back after 6+ hours to find the breakfast plates still there). On that same day, we left the sign indicating we'd like the room cleaned only to find it still hanging and the the room untouched. To their credit, on a later day they took the initiative without our request. Like I said... Inconsistent.

Second, the bathroom had a couple of issues. One was the water pressure which was very low all the time. Then the floor would get wet during the shower because the curtain is not terribly effective at doing its only job. Because it was so small there were no places to hang things to dry or place the toiletries. Not a deal breaker but kind of inconvenient.

The third reason is the food quality. It's decent, and you won't go hungry. They have lots of offerings. But you also wouldn't go out of your way to eat there. It seems a lot of it comes out of boxes and it's not as much cooked, as it is prepared. It will do tho if you don't want to go in town, but don't expect to be impressed.

If it seems like a lot of the review is commenting on the negatives, that is with the intent of making them known and not because they were big issues. We gave it 4 stars after all. The stay was enjoyable and save for a few minor things, we were glad we chose it and would stay there again.

Pros:
-Very good service from the managers, who really went out of our way to help us arranging tours and transportation. They were very friendly and resourceful, above and beyond what you get at other places. They are why I give this place "3 out of 5" instead of 2.
-The "vista" is indeed quite "stunning", especially during sunset.
-The place seems to have 24 hour (or 23 hour) electricity, unlike many other places

Cons:
-We had a very bad first impression, since the van service they booked us on from Puerto was terrible (they showed up 30 minutes late at the airport, kept us waiting in their hot "office" for an hour, stopped randomly along the roadside for 30 minutes while the driver chatted with his buddy). To Stunning Vistas' credit, they apologized for this and booked us on a decent (bus) service back to Puerto.
-The restaurant is HORRIBLE. (Bad food and even worse service). It was so bad, that we preferred to eat breakfast outside, even though their breakfast was free.
-The rooms do not have adequate lighting
-The bathroom is small and poorly let

Overall, this is not a place that befits its price range (which is not particularly cheap by Philippine standards). However, it seems that the mid-range standard in El-Nido / Corong2 is not that high. And the service from the hotel staff itself does partially make up for the setbacks.

I'd recommend this place, with the caveat that the restaurant is best avoided, and that you may want to check your room before booking.

A word on Corong2 vs El Nido. Corong2 is significantly less crowded and touristy, and feels actually quite local (with just a few hotels). It is definitely nicer and with more space. The scenery is arguably a bit nicer, but nice in both spots. The main advantage of El Nido is that it has more F&B options (which are basically non existent in Corong2, outside hotels). The good thing is that if you stay in Corong2, it is very easy (and really quite cheap) to get a tricyle ride -- 5 minutes -- to El Nido. The road is a bit too long and dangerous to walk comfortably.

The Stunning Vistas Resort is just perfectly located a few minutes from the town of El Nido. It is far enough to keep you away from the hustle and bustle of the town, but near enough to allow you to enjoy the many restaurants and bars in El Nido town if and when you want to. The staff are all friendly and ready to make your stay even more delightful.

My family and I are coming back to Stunning Vistas!

Planned a first ever family getaway after ages! I'm telling you for a family of 16 members, it is not that easy but this place sure beats the 5 hour drive. We stayed here 3 days out of the 4 day tour package. Location is great if you're looking for a place that is far from the town hustle, beach front and amazing sunsets! It is approx. 5-10 mins tricycle ride if you need something. Staff is incredible in hospitality,Ms. Lisa and her crew! there was a live band too during our stay (April 2-4). There isn't any kitchenette but if you buy fresh catch from the market, the staff are good in cooking it for you at a reasonable price. I do have to agree about buying pearls, just wait until you get to Puerto Prinsesa if you are on a tour to purchase as you will be disappointed of the price mark up. Overall, I will definitely comeback next time :)

I was looking forward to Stunning Vistas - and not just because I was coming from Blue Cove on Albaguen Island! I wasn't disappointed. We arrived to a warm welcome from Lisa (the front office manager), Luther who works the bar and does grounds maintenance and Jane. We were quickly shown to our rooms and given a welcoming drink. The rooms are simple yet nice. There was an air con already churning out nicely chilled air, twin beds with crisp sheets and a large bathroom with hot shower which was used to wash away three nights of Blue Cove! There is an extensive menu with a mix of Filipino and Western dishes, and of course the necessary San Miguel beers and cocktails. It also has a good, strong wifi signal. The accommodation is effectively on three sides of a square, the fourth side being completely open with a 'stunning vista' of Biscuit Bay. It leaves a green square in the middle with admittedly old sun loungers, and a small stage on which a local band plays on Saturday and Tuesday nights (who were quite fun and played requests for us!) and piano on a Monday night. The resort also runs its own island hopping tours, using its own boats and staff who are friendly and adept. We went on one and the lunch they prepared on the beach was lovely! You have to try the massage service. Edna provided the best massage I've had in Thailand or the Philippines. You can tell she's been property trained - and quite different from the beach side massages you get in Sebang. The final head massage is to die for! The Resort also pulled out stops as we (our party was 19 by this time) celebrated a 10yo's birthday. They procured a cake, beautifully decorated, and even a dozen lobsters which were cooked to perfection. It's not all perfect - there are feral dogs that stalk the beach and bother you a bit at night while you're eating dinner, the sole bathroom amenity was a small bar of soap which ran out after 3 days and some of the furniture is a little dated.

I don't often give a five star rating. For me, five stars aren't a reflection of luxury, but an acknowledgement that expectations have been surpassed and the whole is greater than the sum of its parts. Stunning Vistas deserves a five star rating because everything clicks and just works. The staff are absolutely lovely, the outlook from the deck is gorgeous, and it's great value. El Nido's tourist infrastructure (apart from the super-resorts off shore which are several hundred dollars a night) is fledgling. There are a few bars in the 'town' as well as dive operators. If you plan to visit and explore this part of the world, stay at Stunning Vistas. You won't be disappointed.

Fantastic & highly recommend this place! After 6 hrs on a rough road, arriving at Stunnings made it all OK!!! We arrived at 5.30pm & greeted with a beautiful sunset! Kids run straight to the beach & forgot all the aches & pains of our journey from PP! Staff are helpful & entertaining! Food is average & I can't complain bcoz I had the best rocky road ice cream there-don't order the halo halo not authentic! Stayed for 4D/3N in beach front cottages with ocean views - the hammocks were a bliss! They had a live music on weekends & good thing it finishes at 8.30pm! The place is peaceful & away from tourist night life! Great place for kids as they have plenty of yard & a big bonus is the private beach! It's not whitesand beach but good enough to swim & kids to play as its shallow & calm. The rooms are spacious & comfortable. Don't expect 5star hotel furniture. It's clean & the shower is ok with hot water.
BEWARE: few vendors comes around to sell pearls etc, they are marked up x5! If you want to buy good quality pearls best to wait at Puerto Princessa & ask your driver to take you to the right place. Also no ATM facility in El Nido, bring plenty of pesos.
SUGGESTION:
1. Best to fly to El Nido & take a bus to go back to PP - 6hrs on road was tough on kids...we had 3 kids & all of them had motion sickness!! Was not a pleasant journey!!!
2. Must book a tour to underground river 3 weeks prior your arrival as this tour gets booked out during peak season- we missed out! :(
3. Book tour A & C worth every penny!! If large group you can ask for more discount & senior & kids rate! We had 12ppl cost us 25,000 pesos for two days with kayak hires. Hire a kayak it's worth it!!! Also bring a pair of reef shoes-lots of corals & can be painful to walk around coral areas.
And bring your own life jackets for kids under 9. Their life jackets are too big & some don't fit well. For safety best to bring your own.

Enjoy EL NIDO!!! Definitely will come back & Stunning Vistas is our place to stay! I wished we stayed longer than 4days soooo many beautiful places to see!!!

I wanted to give this place 5 stars, I really did - The location was great, the beach was nice, and the staff was absolutely wonderful. The room furnishings were a bit spartan, but it was clean and comfortable, and the grounds were kept up nicely. However, I had some minor quibbles: The shower felt like it was permanently set at "gentle rain" - there has to be a way to increase that water pressure. (My room was on the second floor.) And there were a few things that needed TLC: The ceiling had brown spots (I could not decide if it was water damage or mud from some errant wasp nests), and the walls need a fresh coat of paint.

I stayed for 4D/3N in late Feb, and the weather was perfect. I did not need the AC (but it worked fine anyway). Breakfast was included in the room rate, and the choices were good. Might I suggest partnering up with a local bakery to provide pan de sal or ensaimada or other Pinoy goodies for breakfast? Maybe some pan de coco or bibingka for merienda?

The room did not have enough desk or counter space. Maybe you could add a small desk or side table? It doesn't have to be fancy. Just a flat space to set stuff on.

I loved this place. Warm up that hammock. I am definitely coming back.
