“Don;t try to book Big Apple, especially not if with a group or you want reply to your booking email”
1 of 5 bubbles Reviewed January 10, 2014

On 20 Dec 2013 we emailed Big Apple the following email:

We are a group of 17 people (12 are divers, the other spouses) and we would like to book 8 rooms at your resort, plus diving trips for the divers.

One of us has stayed at your resort before and it looks like your resort would be perfect for our group.

We are based in Amsterdam and will fly to Manila and rent a bus to go to Batangas and take a longboat to Puerto Galera.

The period we would like to stay at your hotel is Mon 17 March arrival and March 26 departure.

Can you let us know if that is workable for you, and which rooms will be available during that time?

We received no reply whatsoever.
We resend our booking request on 22 Dec and again on 2 Jan.
And although we received return receipt, we received no reply.

Clearly this resort is not interested in attracting business, so on 9 Jan 2014 we wrote the following:

We assume you are too busy to even reply an email and do not want our group to stay at your resort.

We understand, and we have this morning confirmed out booking with another resort who were happy to have our group in March, both for accommodation, food as well as diving.

We wish your resort all the best, for you must be booked 100% full 365 days per year to not even show the courtesy to reply our emails.

I am sure you do not mind that we let the rest of the world on Tripadvisor and other sites that you are too busy to book any more rooms for 2014 and too busy even to reply to booking/reservation emails.

All the best.

As accustomed by now; no reply.

Needless to say we booked our whole group at an other resort happy to have our business.

Klaas Vermolen

Room Tip: For a good room and responsive service; do NOT book at Big Apple but book one of the other resorts.

We apologize for the lack of communication and bad customer service you received. The Big Apple management and staff from that time period have all be terminated and are no longer associated with the resort. Sincerely hope on your next tip to Sabang you can give the new management and staff a chance to regain your business.

We had booked this place for about 2 weeks, ended staying one night and leaving the next morning.
The place is a total disgrace.
Our first room smelt of urine and the bathroom ceiling and half of it had fallen off...
We asked for another room and in the shower was a bucket for you... No water from the shower tap...
The whole place is dirty with drinks, food and other stuff lying around the pool and everywhere until the next day...
If you are a couple or a group Of friends DO NOT GO THERE!
If you a single guys that want to pick up easily however that might be a place for you...
Other than that the price is highier than other MUCH nicer places around...

For single men this is a great place for you to meet the locals and have some fun......... if you are travelling as part of a couple or family then this is not the place for you.

Our room was 500 pesos a night and it was definitely a case of you got what you paid for - a dingy dirty room with cold water and full of mosquitoes. However of course 500 pesos is very very cheap and we heard that the more expensive rooms are lot nicer. On the plus side the staff are really friendly, always happy to clean the room, change towels or generally have a chat with.

The food was expensive (compared to nearby restaurants) but very tasty.

The location is good, right on the beach although we preferred White Beach on the other side of the island.

Room Tip: Choose a room away from the bar, it gets pretty rowdy!

Thank you for your review. You are quite right, you get what you pay for, however, the problems you mentioned have been noted and corrected. No matter what the cost of the room, it should be clean and comfortable. With new management and staff on station, we are addressing the problems that have been mention in other reviews. And yes the food is tasty and is now better than it ever has been. We have a new chef on staff from Manila, a trained culinary grad, and you can sure tell the difference. Great tasting food and huge portions, next time you are in Sabang please stop in to see the changes we have implement a sample the new menu.

I have stayed here many times over the years....just stayed here for 2 nights in oct 2013 WOULD NOT STAY AGAIN... ALL the food is shocking and the Australian manager has let the place go by allowing scumbag vendors to walk inside hotel like they own it and bug all the guests ALL THE TIME... THE ROOMS ARE OK BUT TOO EXPENSIVE FOR PHILIPPINES.....much better to stay at capt gregs sabang or better still go to Thailand..i understand its a dive resort but when my girlfriend and I wanted to use the pool it was allways full of wannabe navy seals in their dive gear.....NO GOOD GO ELSEWHERE

Room Tip: rooms around pool

Sorry your stay here at the Big Apple was disappointing. We were aware of those short comings and have made changes across the board. There is new management, new wait staff and a new chef, please stop by to see the new Big Apple next time you are in Sabang.

I can here with my partner on the recommendation of 2 friends. The Resort is given a glossy appearance on the website but in reality it is old and worn out . On arrival I thought oh my good what have I brought my partner to. Our first room which was the most expensive with four poster bed was infested with cockroaches so we immediately complained and was moved to a newer block room 30 which actually had plastered walls not the woven raffia type so we could actually see and entrance holes into the room. We stayed 8 nights and had no intrusion of bugs into the room however there away a cute rat seen outside on the landing together with huge resident toad. If you are into critters the no problem. The whole resort is run down so we ended up most evenings eating in the bar. The food was varied and we had not problems , try the pizzas they are huge. If I came again with my partner I would stay at a more up market resort. The transport arrangements made by Big Apple from Manilla to the Resort were excellent. Don't be conned into paying money for the trip to individuals on the journey. The fee is paid to Big Apple. Now to the diving, we brought out own equipment but as an instructor could tell the equipment they provide was of a good standard. The weather was unfortunately not good as we encountered the end of Typhoon usagi and it rained all week. The corals were nice and would have been better with sun light on them. If you have been to the Red Sea then you see nothing different here. The dive team were very helpful. Your equipment was put together before you arrived each morning, you then checked it and the boys carried it to the boat. All dives were just a few mins boat ride. Jason the aussy dive master was excellent, there seemed to be a resident instructor call Pedro who very rarely acknowledged us even though we dived there for 7 days. I think the resort is owned by an Australian guy who passed by the reception desk as I was paying. We stayed for 8 nights, had dived for 7 days and also eaten in the bar so had spent a lot of cash. Was disappointed that he did not say hi or asked if our stay was ok. Very poor customer focus. For people on a tight budget and like the bar 'activities' then this is ok.

Room Tip: Choose room 27 to 30.

Thank you for your review. Many of the issues you mentioned have been corrected. New management and new staff have been in place now for several months and are slowly but surly making the Big Apple a better resort. Yes some of the rooms are dated, plans are in place to give some of the rooms a facelift and more attention. The bar and restaurant are adjacent to Sabang beach, its a seasoned beach side establishment with character that the locals and expats love. Please stop by the next time you are in Sabang to see the changes we have made and to try some food off the new menu.

Who: This places is great for single men (or those who want to have fun in the evening) coming to SCUBA dive. If you are a loving couple or family, this place is not for you. Couples and Families go to White Beach

HOTEL: The big Apple is in a great location right on the beach with its Bar and Restaurant right up front for a great view of the water. They offer a really good rate but you get what you pay for. The rooms are run down at best but are for the most part clean. Those of you wanting “Hot Water” don’t count on it. Each time I go there I have to try about three rooms before I can find one that actually has working Hot water. Even in the “NEWER” rooms in the back on the right. Towels are another BIG issue for this place. In the five times I have stayed there I have NEVER received a dry towel from the maid. I don’t think they have a dryer. They only line dry the towels and with the high humidity, they never dry. This is a budget rate place and you will get what you are paying for.

SCUBA: All around a good experience. However, there is one Instructor there (believe his name is Peter Wilson) who has been diving for many years but sucks as an Instructor. The instructor you want is Jason. He is GREAT! This other Instructor is very grumpy, will rush you, and doesn’t understand how to keep an eye on the student under water. He appears to only want to get through the lesson as fast as he can so he can get back to the bar and drink! They have decent equipment to use and I really like that they take all your dive gear out to the boat for you.

RESTAURANT: Okay food at best. The staff is great though. Bad side is that there is an old lady (been around for years) which comes in and walks around to each table with her hand out begging. If you sit near the front of the restaurant you will have 5-10 people during your meal ask you if you want to buy something from them (Pool sticks, necklace, knives, etc.)

BAR: Decent prices on drinks, pools table, and sports on the TV. Good local bar which allows the freelance women to come in. I don’t recommend you do anything other than chat with these girls as they do not get weekly doctor checkups like the Bar Girls do and if anything is stolen out of your room where are you going to go to find her? Just enjoy the drinks and go get your girl from the local discos.

POOL: It has a pool but you may be inconvenienced if you want to swim during the day as this is where they hold SCUBA classes each day. The pool is not cleaned as much as it should be. There is leaves and derbie floating around in there all the time. But it is cleaner than the ocean.

Area: Sabang is a perfect place if you are a single man looking for SUBA during the day and FUN (wink wink) at night! With SIX discos with hundreds of bar girls all within a three minute walk of the Big Apple, this really isn’t a place for kids or happy couples. Nearby White Beach is more of a place for couples and families.

Thank you for your insightful and comprehensive review of the Big Apple....most of the review was spot on. The Big Apple doesn't pretend to be something it is not. If you are looking for a more upscale resort, the Big Apple won't be for you. But if you want modest accommodations at a low price, good food with large portions, cheap strong drinks, and a friendly professional dive shop then the Big Apple might be right for you. Yes there were problems back when you originally penned this review, but there is new management and staff on board and they are addressing those issues you mentioned. As far as Peter Wilson is concerned...yes Peter tends to be a little rough around the edges at times. He’s cantankerous old salt with a lot of character, sort of like Quint in the movie Jaws. He has 30 plus years as a dive instructor, over 30,000 dives, over 12,000 students and several diving records. He’s the most experienced diver on the beach and the go to guy when you’re in a jam. Thank you again for your review.

Just spent 12 days staying and diving out of Big Apple Dive, Sabang, I paid for budget accomodation and the place I stayed in was good. The staff were very helpful and quickly sorted out any issue. The bar and restaurant area were excellent looks straight out over the sea and was always the most happening place at night and the food was great. The ease of diving out of Big Apple cannot be overstated, Jason and Peter the dive instructors were excellent, very easy going yet attentive, good aussie blokes (never thought I would say that). A Big thanks to Steve the owner/manager of the resort, I enjoyed my stay there and will come back one day. Value for money was excellent.
