Malioboro Street Flea Market

A lot of junk clothes and knick-knacks. Nice local ambiance but not much else. We walked up & down Malioboro several times but could not get to buy anything worthwhile. Worse, my wife was bitten by a horse so be extra careful when walking past the horse carriages.

Malioboro is a shopping haven for bargain hunting tourists. Definitely one stop shopping in Yogyakarta for almost anything you want to buy (traditional local foods and snacks, batiks, shirts, artifacts) within very reasonable (and still negotiable) prices. Don't like haggling? You could go straight to Mirota located on the southern part of Malioboro Rd. to buy those in fixed prices. While on Malioboro, try to ride on becak (tricycle) and horse carriage around the area, and snap a pic or two next to Malioboro road sign in Javanese letters (similar to "Iamsterdam" in Amsterdam).

Malioboro street and markets are amazing places - you can get great batiks and artifacts (mostly batik though) all over the place. The prices are very reasonable, you should probably bargain though. We visited a few times and also went into the Pasar Beringharjo which is open only until 3 or 5 pm (depending on which part you visit). This is also a must-see, it is a market for locals, but if like us, you want to see more of the local color, it is great, For example, we bought some Indonesian Cardamom which is very different from Indian/ typical cardamom - more deep and spicy in flavor, less sweet, but great with tea! Fascinating little stores with all kinds of stuff, we got my daughter "croc-like" shoes for about US$6 and they were very comfy and well made. Nice Batik shirts for Dad and son at about US$8... Often there are street performers and musicians also performing on the street. The street and markets are crowded, but worth it.

Malioboro street is full of souvenirs, Batiks, curios. Shop keepers generally quote thrice the price and you need to bargain and bring it down to 1/3rd of it. Its a good idea to walk around see the whole street on 1st day, make up you mind on things you need to purchase and then get into the shopping spree on the second day.
