This was one hotel which hit the nail on the head, where it comes to a perfect blend of quality, service and adventure for the price. As a 5-star property, I expect and got no less.

The room had all modern conveniences you'd expect, nice sized bedrooms and bathroom with good water pressure on the shower. The walk to our room was a bit far - felt like 200m - but there's lots of displays to admire along the way. My wife and I had two elderly women with us - they didn't complaint despite the walk. Service was always excellent, from the well dressed door lady (in local costume) who always welcomed us by name each night, offering to carry our things and the quick check on what we did, if we needed anything else.. To the porter who took care of our things, liaised with our driver each morning, ensuring everything was perfect.

Breakfast each morning was always a good fun experience, as food was displayed in different niche's throughout the open as well as separately air-conditioned breakfast area. I like the wonderful selection of juices, breads, hearty local selections as well as the conservative continental and cook-to-order options.... One could (and I noticed that some did) spend hours over breakfast. I like the 'stall' ran by a local lady, distribution samples of local elixirs! I think mine was a kind of tamarind juice -awesome!

We had a great time, partly thanks to this hotel and to out tour operator. I can't recommend The Phoenix enough.

Room Tip: Try the soft ginger candies at reception! We just had to buy more for home.

hotel building and environment: 5 stars. very beautiful colonial style heritage building. very well kept and maintained.

hotel staffs: 5 stars. very friendly. always smile and greet. i don't have any problem to talk to them. actually most jogja ppl are very friendly to tourists. but the locals do not speak much english.

buffet breakfast and room service: 5 stars. delicious breakfast, this is the only hotel that i don't have to wait for my eggs at the egg station, the waitress will send to your table but they do forget sometimes. eating at the water fountain area with live traditional music played at background is a bonus. room service is quick, about 20 mins waiting. price is reasonable. pizza is really big enough for 2 to share.

room condition: 3 stars. our superior room is quite small compared with other 5 stars hotels i've stayed b4. clean and basic. we stayed at 2nd floor so it can be quite noisy in the morning while guests start eating breakfast at downstairs and also noise from the road. if you are lucky, you can see Gunung Merapi from your balcony in the clear sky morning. the air-cond didn't work in the last morning.

not many proper restaurants nearby. walking to jln malioboro is not that near. i'll suggest you to take trans jog bus or becak.

will definitely stay here again.

We stayed for 4 nights. Hotel was great! The service fantastic. Reception, housekeeping and everyone were very polite. Décor of hotel was good too...very majestic looking. It is about a 15 minute walk to Jalan Malioboro.
The downside: There were some ants in the pantry area of the room. Not sure how it got there but I told the staff and I hoped they will do something about it.
Wifi was free but the speed was kinda slow.

The Kedai Tiga Nonya restaurant is just opposite the hotel. We ate there on the first night. For us (from Malaysia), this is not an authentic nonya restaurant. Those in Singapore and Malacca are a lot better. Not sure how they won so many awards. We ate in this restaurant which is just a short walk away (Restaurant Tio Ciu) and the food was much better and cheaper.

We would stay in the Hotel again for its good service

Room Tip: Pick one of those facing the courtyard or pool. It is a lot quieter

Delightful old world charm boutique hotel! Beautifully decorated with antiques and their hotel signature motif of the “Phoenix” could be spotted every where from the corner of the picture frame, door knobs, coaster, ashtray, newspaper stand. Even the hotel staff batik was custom designed to feature the phoenix! That shows that thought and effort were taken in into the little details that matters.

We stayed 4 nights at this little gem of a hotel. Had a smooth check-in. Front office reception was polite and courteous. Good spoken English. Our room was luxurious and facing the pool as requested. It is lovely to sit out on the balcony and relax. The bed was comfortable and clean. While the bathroom was spacious, nothing serious but some tiles need a more thorough cleaning. Complimentary toiletries require updating to be on par with the good reviews of this beautiful hotel. We enjoyed the little touches of welcome fruit platter of their local fruit “salak” and miniature bottle of jelly fruit gums.

Buffet breakfast was excellent. Choice of international and local Javanese favourites. The ala carte menu was good too. We took time to enjoy the dining experiences; breakfast in the courtyard next to the water fountain, dinner surrounded by the specially chosen antiques and the nostalgic piano accompaniment.

The charming hotel has many photo opportunities with the ethnic furniture and fittings dotted along the corridors and in common areas.

Experience the trishaw ride to the Malioboro shopping area. Not expensive. Or take a leisurely walk there in 10 mins. Staff will assist in hailing the public transport such as the trishaw or taxis.

Lovely stay at a lovely hotel.

Room Tip: Room facing pool.

I've stayed at Phoenix a couple of times now and I've had good as well as not so good experiences. I stayed in a Superior room once, and it was terrible - the air conditioning broke down, they couldn't get it fixed despite by calling ever so often for them to send housekeeping up to look into it, and the wifi didn't work. They finally moved me to another room after banging about the air-conditioning for an entire day.

On my more recent stays I stayed in the Deluxe room and it was worth the upgrade. More space, plus a much nicer view, with a balcony overlooking the pool. (Superior room looked out into someone's back yard, and once, faced a gasoline station.) Everything was smooth this time round - prompt check in, room service delivered on time like they said they would, smooth and prompt check out. Very comfortable bed and pillows. The room service food was average, I wouldn't say fantastic compared to the other restaurants in Yogya, but decent enough. Wifi was working well this time too. My only comment for areas to improve would be the bathroom - the old-fashioned mixer taps in the shower can be a pain because it takes some time for the hot water to come on, and when it does, it's scalding! And I would prefer a shower head that can be moved about too, not just fixed onto the ceiling. In general, I think the bathrooms could do with a refresh.

Other than that, this is a great hotel. Grand without being imposing, with plenty of old world charm and elegance. Nicely located too, for getting around Yogya.

Room Tip: Worth upgrading to a Deluxe Legacy room for a pool view. Superior rooms face dingy backyards.
