Excellent accommodation in centre of Yogyakarta; service is excellent and rooms are great.
Prices for rooms are variable so shop around, as we got a superb deal via Accor hotels and could afford to upgrade to a suite, which was top notch

pros: location is perfect to visit Prabanan, Borobudur etc. They even arranged for a car at good rate (can negotiate) for the visits. Service is very good and they go out of the way to help. The pool is really neat, located in the middle of the courtyard. The breakfasts are superb, with local delicacies, western type (incl Egg counter etc) and local remedy drinks. The decoration is very nicely done both in the main areas and the rooms.

The suite rooms are really large and tasefully done, with superb bathrooms. You can choose which pillow types you want and the service is excellent and quick. They make a really good job of cleaning so it seems immaculate and the staff are genuinely friendly and not seeking gratuities.

The airport pick up is reasonably priced and worked for us smooth as silk. Their travel desk is honest and makes genuine suggestions as to what is best to do (even recommending us to book train tickets to Surabaya via a travel place to save money and pay with a CC).

Cons: the front of the hotel does not do the place justice, but enter and it is a different world from the hussle and bussle on the outside; accept the fact this is a Muslim country and so the calls to prayers are heard from 5 am...not much for the hotel to do about that.

I would recommend this hotel as one of the best in Java and would not hesitate one instant in going back. Frankly, find the best price by shopping around and don't hesitate to book this. You will not find better.

Room Tip: Go for the suites, for the small price differential it is so worth it! Ask to be on the courtyard o...

We stayed at this hotel for 5 nights. It is a beautiful building with great decor. The staff are very friendly and courteous. It is like going back in time in this hotel. The rooms are large and comfortable with a great shower. We had a room with a balcony overlooking the pool. The buffet breakfast had a good choice of food. The hotel is quite a way from the main city sites but there are lots of becaks and taxis.

At The Phoenik hotel all adds up. From the very nice staff, wonderfull combination of antique style and modern facilities, fresh flowers and some salak at the arrival, till the scale in the bathroom. Breakfast serves for all tastes, a nice welcome from the "Jamu lady" (to help you from all your aches and paines) and the live gamelan music.
We even got a lot of assistance when we visited an orphanage. So this is the best hotel to stay in.

Room Tip: Rooms with cityview are quiet, rooms with view at the swimmingpool depend on the guest usage.

We spent 3 nights in this lovely hotel.
We were given a very nice room at the top floor, facing the swimming pool: great view and, above all, great beds - the mattresses and the room in general were so comfortable that waking up in the morning was so difficult!!
Guests have at their disposal a buffet breakfast, quality and variety are good and you can have the type of breakfast you like: continental with mini croissants, small cakes, bread and jams, yogurt and fruit, or Indonesian with hot food, or something similar to an English breakfast.
If you wish to have dinner at the restaurant, better to book in advance, if you have any particular preference regarding the table. We ordered from a la carte menu, but were not impressed: the atmosphere was nice but the service was very slow and the food wasn't at the level we were expecting (maybe a wrong choice of the mains but we didn't like to find on the plate a bowl full of beef fat only or chicken with more skin then meat). They also propose some BBQ nights that I'm sure are much better, so go for it you have the chance.
We tried also a traditional Javanese massage at the Hotel Spa: excellent and not that pricey, of course for the European standard (52 euro for 2 people, for an hour massage): book in advance.

The only negative point regarding this hotel is that - when we asked to do an extra night, as we had to change our plans -they asked for a higher rate (as we had previously booked through a website at a more convenient rate) - and that could still be acceptable - but we were then given a noisy room facing the main road on the back and with a disgraceful view, even if we had asked specifically for a similar room. I would have preferred they would have told us immediately that there was not availability of that type of room, as we could have moved somewhere else. We had to spend half of the morning on the phone with the reception to clarify this misunderstanding, and then we were given a room at the ground floor, a kind of compromise.
A part from this inconvenient, our stay was great and I would definitely recommend this hotel.

Surroundings and transports.
The hotel is very close to Malioboro, the shopping street (where you will find plenty of batik and handcraft shops), and also a few meters from the bus stop that can take you to Pranbanan temple in 45 minutes. To move around take a becak, it is quite funny, there are hundreds in the city, and remember to haggle the price (it should be from 5000 to 15000 R for trip). Taxi from the airport is 40/50.000 R, if you pay directly at the taxi counter at the arrival - Taxi to the airport using the meter was just 26.000 R. Always remember to ask the taxi driver to use the meter, as some of them tent not to do it and to propose you a forfeit price that is of course much more expensive.

Room Tip: Ask for a room facing the swimming pool or the fountain area, at the higher floors. Avoid rooms on t...

The Phoenix Hotel in Yogyakarta is one of the best hotels I ever have visite. It is very well maintained, very clean and comfortable, especially the deluxe room with balcony with an view at the swimmingpool. Old and new parts of the building breathe and colonial atmosphere. The staff is lovely, friendly and correct. Breakfast is extensive and with live music of too (sometimes one) gamalanplayer(s). The inhouse tour is a little bit dissapointing but it's free. The hotelshop sells nice batiks and other souvenirs, but it's expensive. Also the laundry service is pricy (but very quick). The hotel is located 15 minuts walk from Jalan Malioboro (thé shopping street of Yogyakarta). Nearby the hotel you will find several ATM's, small shops and all kinds of transportfacilities (betjak, taxi, chaise). Restaurant Paprika is one of the best restaurants in Yogyakarta. The food is very tasty and affordable. The winelist is okay but - as everywhere in Indonesia - to expensive. When you are in Yogyakarta I will highly recommend this fantastic hotel.

Room Tip: Take a free jamu (herbdrink) before you get breakfast! Balcony is great for those who love to smoke...

We stayed for two nights in this hotel. The service was excellent. The room was large and quiet.

Here some special notes: Since the room prices are relatively low for a 5* hotel you will find quite a lot of tourists there which normally wouldn't stay in this category. Restaurant and service prices reflect the category, so don't expect the prices you will find outside own the street. The Mariboro street is in walking distance (ca. 15'). As an alternative you can use one of the numerous rickshas for 1-2 euro depending on how tough you negotiate.

historic hotel with unique architecture.

Service was good & hotel is kinda quiet.
When I stayed there, the lift was broken so have to take the stairs up and down to 3rd floor.

Room was relatively tight & have a small balcony. Although its a historic hotel, bathroom is like it was built in the 1980's (meaning old & tired), with shower and no bath tub.

Hotel have 1 restaurant & a bar, food & drinks are good. pool is small & more like a plunge pool.

I dont mind staying here again, but will choose a bigger room.

Room Tip: the newer wing have bigger room & facing the pool
