“Very Classy”
Reviewed July 7, 2013

Lovely hotel with well trained and presented staff who go out of there way to cater to your every whim.
Breakfast is amazing and the setting of the swimming pool is awesome.
One of the most classy properties I have stayed in for a few years and truly an experience.
Only fault if any is the size of the superior rooms.bit on the small side so if you like a bit more space upgrade.
Would return if I get the chance.

I first stayed at the Phoenix (pronounced Feownik by locals and taxi drivers) 2 years ago and thought it was brilliant, on this return visit my opinion hasn't changed. On my last visit I booked a standard room, but this time paid $10 extra for something a little better. I was surprised to find that the room was identical. But the reason for paying more was that I wanted a view over the beautiful pool and I got one. If you want to save money just book the standard room, but for the perfect stay in a perfect hotel go for the upgrade. Either way if you book in advance on the Accor website the hotel is wonderful value (this time the Indonesian holidays had started and the rack rate was 2.5 times what I paid, but even at 2.5 times what I paid it would still be reasonable value). Maybe it was just a reflection of the time of year, but this time gone are the western tourists to be replaced by middle class Indonesians; my own take it this is a reflection on how fast the world is changing.
Jogja seems to have even more choice of hotels than 2 years ago, but I could not imagine staying anywhere else. The photos are all representative of how great this hotel is. Its full of Javanese antiques and stunning architectural features. If anything the service is even better.
This time I was attending the University of Indonesia Conference at the Sheraton and I have to say how favourably the Phoenix compared with the Sheraton, which seemed very uninspiring. Better still the Sheraton is a long way from town, by the airport, whereas the Phoenix is a Rp.20,000 becak ride from Maliboro. In fact, I feel the Phoenix is perfectly located, far enough away from the mayhem of Maliboro, but close enough to get to the action.
Some reviewers have complained that the Phoenix needs refurbishing, especially the bathrooms, but I cannot say this was my experience. Of course bathrooms don't last in Indonesia and it is possible that some are not pristine, but I cannot image anything being close to unacceptable. I seem to remember that it included a full compliment of toiletries, along with bathrobes and batik kimono.
The first time I reviewed the Phoenix I titled it 'one of the world's best hotels for $50 a night', well the prices have gone up a little (along with everything in Indonesia), but the sentiment is still true. Jogja is by far my favourite city in Indonesia and the Phoenix is the perfect place to stay in this wonderful city. Being busy with a Conference and having so many great restaurants in the city I never did get a chance to eat in the hotel, but remember excellent, if expensive for Jogja, food. The bar has changed to more of a country club style, but its still a little lacking in atmosphere
If you are considering visiting the real Indonesia, rather than Bali, please visit Yogyakarta (known as Jogja) and do not even consider booking another hotel.

Room Tip: Pay for the upgrade for a pool view

One of the most beautiful hotels I knew in Yogyakarta.

Spent 2 nights, and all I can say is: SUPERB!

For those people who seek a perfect place to stay in this city, I would recommend this hotel as I would be surely coming back here.

This is quite simply the most beautiful hotel in Yogyakarta. Formerly the residence of a wealthy merchant, this Dutch colonial building harks back to a very different age. At the same time, the hotel shows it's Asian roots, with Koi ponds running through the lobby area and Indonesian art on the walls.

The rooms are perfectly adequate, though they could do with some brighter lights or colours. The breakfast though was never-ending and tasty, and well worth the extra cost. The service was, as you may have guessed, excellent.

A special mention must be made of the bed! It was truly amazing, and we slept like babies. We were just sad we didn't note down the brand to get one for home! And please do try out the free head massage at the spa. While the spa treatments are a wee bit (cough cough...) more expensive than spas outside, the skill of masseurs cannot be questioned.

Lastly, if you do happen to catch the Ramayana ballet at Prambanan, book the dinner through the hotel. It was a great meal, at a very reasonable price, with the Prambanan temples as backdrop. Hard to beat that for ambience!

All in all, highly recommended, and if only for the beautiful building.

Room Tip: Avoid rooms near the main road, especially those which are faced outwards. The early morning traffic...

I spend 2 nights with my fiance last december in deluxe room. The hotel had very nice staff that always smile and very helpful. The hotel room itself was very classic with batik decoration on the wall. However the bathroom will be nicer if they have bathtub. Very nice pool view and classic balcony of hotel room.
Breakfast was excellent with many food varieties and also gamelan sound background. We will try the antique Mercedes benz in the next visit.
Overall nice hotel, very recommended.

Stayed in the hotel for 3 days during my trip around Yogya's temples and volcanoes.
I have booked a twin room which was on special. The room was well equipped. The only thing was that bathroom (especially shower) requires some refreshment.
All the rest was really perfect. Hotel's exterior and interior is awesome. Service is very good. Breakfast was nice with big selection of tasty food.
Location of the hotel wasn't crucial cuz taxi is very cheap. The only problem is traffic...

Room Tip: Avoid rooms facing street because of early morning calls for praying
