I first stayed at the Phoenix (pronounced Feownik by locals and taxi drivers) 2 years ago and thought it was brilliant, on this return visit my opinion hasn't changed. On my last visit I booked a standard room, but this time paid $10 extra for something a little better. I was surprised to find that the room was identical. But the reason for paying more was that I wanted a view over the beautiful pool and I got one. If you want to save money just book the standard room, but for the perfect stay in a perfect hotel go for the upgrade. Either way if you book in advance on the Accor website the hotel is wonderful value (this time the Indonesian holidays had started and the rack rate was 2.5 times what I paid, but even at 2.5 times what I paid it would still be reasonable value). Maybe it was just a reflection of the time of year, but this time gone are the western tourists to be replaced by middle class Indonesians; my own take it this is a reflection on how fast the world is changing.
Jogja seems to have even more choice of hotels than 2 years ago, but I could not imagine staying anywhere else. The photos are all representative of how great this hotel is. Its full of Javanese antiques and stunning architectural features. If anything the service is even better.
This time I was attending the University of Indonesia Conference at the Sheraton and I have to say how favourably the Phoenix compared with the Sheraton, which seemed very uninspiring. Better still the Sheraton is a long way from town, by the airport, whereas the Phoenix is a Rp.20,000 becak ride from Maliboro. In fact, I feel the Phoenix is perfectly located, far enough away from the mayhem of Maliboro, but close enough to get to the action.
Some reviewers have complained that the Phoenix needs refurbishing, especially the bathrooms, but I cannot say this was my experience. Of course bathrooms don't last in Indonesia and it is possible that some are not pristine, but I cannot image anything being close to unacceptable. I seem to remember that it included a full compliment of toiletries, along with bathrobes and batik kimono.
The first time I reviewed the Phoenix I titled it 'one of the world's best hotels for $50 a night', well the prices have gone up a little (along with everything in Indonesia), but the sentiment is still true. Jogja is by far my favourite city in Indonesia and the Phoenix is the perfect place to stay in this wonderful city. Being busy with a Conference and having so many great restaurants in the city I never did get a chance to eat in the hotel, but remember excellent, if expensive for Jogja, food. The bar has changed to more of a country club style, but its still a little lacking in atmosphere
If you are considering visiting the real Indonesia, rather than Bali, please visit Yogyakarta (known as Jogja) and do not even consider booking another hotel.
