“Great Place to Stay in Yogyakarta”
Reviewed January 16, 2013

I had an excellent weekend stay at the Phoenix Hotel Yogyakarta. The rooms and service are great. It isn't in the center of the main shopping area, but it isn't all that far if you want to walk or take a very inexpensive ride.

From the outside, this hotel seems to be rather simple. When we arrived, we were wondering what all the hype was about, from rave past reviews that we read. However, all these changed when we stepped into the hotel. It was an experience, to say the least. The decor, atmosphere, and architecture was superb.
We were given a pool side room which really pleased us (and our kids). Open the glass doors, and we were just steps away from the deck chairs and pool. Fortunately, noise was not a problem. Normally one would expect pool side room to be noisier but we did not encounter this. Perhaps when we were there, the activity level around the pool was minimal. Total number of people around the pool side was < 10 including us. More than adequate pool deck chairs.
Room was charming, cozy and comfortable. Bed were a little hard, which was to our liking. Duvets that came with the bedding was very nice. Flat screen TV, cable TV channels, really nothing to complaint about.
Breakfast spread was very good. Check out the selection of fruit juices on offer (see attached photo). Then there is the choice of traditional concocted beverage (jamu), useful if you have a sore throat, cold, etc.
Location of hotel is convenient. It is walkable to Malioboro Street, just over 1 km. We walked with kids and it took some 20minutes. A straight forward walk - come out of the hotel, turn right. At the first traffic light, turn left and cross the street. The all the way straight and you will see Malioboro Street. Alternatively, becak will cost total IDR 20000 for 2 adults (one way). Same price coming back.
For those who need to know, there is a McDonalds within short walking distance. Come out of the hotel main entrance, look to your left and you will see it.
Taxi to airport was pretty cheap. Around IDR 30000. Journey took around 25 minutes. We initially asked the hotel about the hotel transport to airport (IDR 80000), but they recommended us to take the metered taxi, which they hailed for us.
Service overall was fantastic, from check in, to breakfast, to pool side, to checkout. Concierge was also most helpful in giving recommendations and useful information.

We booked connecting rooms for 3 nights at the Phoenix, as we travel with 2 young children. This worked perfectly, and we were given one upon arrival (early in the morning) and the other a bit later when it became available.

The rooms are lovely - heaps of character, and whilst not huge, roomy enough and beautifully furnished. Balconies were lovely - ours overlooked the courtyard, which could get a bit noisy (after dinner with the clatter of clean up/chair stacking etc) but otherwise really nice. The hotel's decor is incredible - and really interesting to look around.

A highlight was the breakfast - one of the best buffet breakfasts we've ever experienced. About 7 kinds of fresh juice, and a huge plus for us was the extensive local delicacies area, served by staff in traditional dress. There were lots of other Indonesian and Asian choices too, which we appreciated. Our kids enjoyed the good Western food selection too, and warm breads/croissants, so a very happy family at breakfast time! A lovely touch was the traditional music being played by two local men in one corner - they even let our kids have a go, which they loved!

The pool was great. Well presented and wonderful plush paddy lounge chairs. The spa looked good and was quite popular.

We were given a list of trips/driver and car prices when we checked in, and really appreciated this as it took the hassle out of trying to organise trips ourselves. Prices were reasonable so we organised a car/driver to take us to Borobudur, Prambanan and Mt Merapi. Merapi was clouded over, but Borobudur and Prambanan were fantastic! Our driver was excellent. We took two of the hotel's bicycle rickshaws to the Sultan's palace, where a lovely old lady guided us around. We booked one way only, but the rickshaw drivers hung around, took us back to the hotel, and we felt they were trustworthy enough to negotiate the total price on return to the hotel (which we generally never do!) They requested a reasonable fee at the end of our trip, so we were happy with the experience, and the kids loved riding on them!

There is a small supermarket nearby for stocking your fridge, which we liked. Dinner at the hotel was fairly pricey, and as one other poster commented, a few more Indonesian choices would have been nice. But the food was delicious, and apart from one young waitress who poured half glasses of wine and clearly didn't like her job very much, we found service to be very good. Western food was great for the kids too, with good healthy choices, and our kids loved it. We ate here most nights and splurged on some nice wine. Our only complaint was that staff didn't seem to have heard about a foie gras/bordeaux December special which was advertised on flyers in our rooms. And which we hoped to order... we tried, and when they knew nothing of it, we gave up! They did however provide fish food for our children to feed to the fish in the water features, which was lovely.

Staff at the front desk were very friendly and professional, very tolerant of, and friendly towards our children, and we also used the business centre to book train tickets on to Jakarta for us. This was a great experience, and although you could fly for roughly the same price, seeing the scenery in Java (in air conditioned comfort) was well worth it.

All in all, a really amazing hotel, exceptional value, and one of our trip highlights! Highly recommend!

Only one comment, please kindly improve the sound proof of the windows and room. I can hear the noise from the streets and other hotel guest dropped the spoon on the floor, and etc. Can be very annoying during night where i look forward for peaceful night rest.

Simply the best- service is excellent, staff is very well trained, discrete though everywhere, a helping hand only when needed- food is outstanding, handmade pastries artistic, combined with some genuine Javanese gamalan players in the patio an uplifting and unique cultural experience, the true spirit of Java is felt- room (suite) has perfect bedding, a good living-room both rooms have tv, a smoking balcony in the back overlooking the volcano and a great bathroom, staff clearly put in an effort to make you feel welcome, daily fresh fruit and small pastries all lovely dressed with fresh flowers, coffee(espresso) and tea-maker in the room, free mini-bar so none of the extra's nonsense- pool is lovely especially in the evening, the hotel just works like a perfect clock, everything is done with precision and refinement- a unique Javanese experience, definitely the best hotel on Java.

Room Tip: If you tell the receptionist a little about your good and bad habits he instantly finds you the best...

I can fully recommend this hotel to everyone travelling to Yogyakarta. We stayed there for four nights and were very impressed by the nice (business) room, the amazingly friendly and efficient service and the nice restaurant. The hotel is partially in a beautiful historic building and the rest of the hotel is built in the same style. It feels like being in the early twentieth century. The hotel is also nicely situated, a short stroll from the Malioboro and not far from the airport. We also used the drivers from the hotel to visit several of the sites. They were very friendly and efficient. If there is any criticism for us, it might be that there is not enough Indonesian food on the menu of the restaurant. However, the Indonesian food that is on the menu is delicious. To finish off our stay we had the romantic dinner. A 6 course menu with only delicious Indonesian food. To be recommended just like the hotel.

Really beautiful colonial building with a gorgeous pool area (especially at night!) staff were friendly & attentive too.

Bit smaller than the pictures but i didnt really mind it. The breakfast spread was generous & loved the crackers that were served with the cheeses...had a herbal tonic from the Jamu table they had during breakfast (was pleasantly surprised !) for a bad sore throat i was nursing..

Off the main Malioboro street which made it a peaceful stay. Will gladly stay here again!
