The guide approached us and explained to us about the origin of Taman Sari and told us he would not charge for the guided tour. Of course it was not a free tour, he did a good job showing us the premise. It was the harem of the sultans and his wives. You can finish viewing the place about 1 to 2 hrs, and it is a good place for photos.

We were so entralled with the Water Castle considering the sultan at the time had the vision to build time such as monument so long ago and the beauty in its architecture. Enjoyed the pools and the labyrinth created by its tunnels for security reasons.

For me as a dutch woman everything in Yogya is very interesting because for example of the role from the sultan during of the war against the dutch from 1945 to 1949. But that is not something you will see in the watercastle. In it self the castle is not very impressive, it is quiet and beautiful but that's all.But the sultans use of this castle is a little bit tricky;it is always the same history from a ruler who thinks he is a god and he can do what he wants, all beatifull women are at his disposal, he just has to pick the best one .When you walk in the castle and climb the tower it is nice to imagine how it was in former time's.Suppose you were the sultan, who would you pick.
The little villages around and the mosk are very worthwhile. If you did not do your home work before it is recommend to take a guide. (not expensive)
And besides yes it was warm and yes it rained.

The place itself is not that big. Having 2 pools on 1 side for the 35 mistresses & 150 kids, and 1 pool on the other for the sultan. While the tower in the middle was used for sultan to "spy" and pick a mistress to accompany him at his own pool. On the other hand, there are some places that served sultan's daily needs (eg changing room, noted : the "rooms" are just empty space without any decorations / furniture).

Surprised by the fact of the water castle, it's a quite interesting place to visit. But since our tour guide actually did not explain in depth, and he tried to end our tour quickly (the tour lasted around 20 mins), i personally think it's better to do your own research and visit beforehand.
