“Great historical setting, good service but food not up to par”
Reviewed November 15, 2013

This is a place to have a semi-private meal with friends.

A converted Dutch style colonial house situated in one of Yogya's leafier neighborhoods. This restaurant as been converted into a restaurant several years ago. The fact that is has lasted and leaped over the three year hurdle means it is now a veteran in Yogya's dining scene.

Not because of the food, however. There is a dearth of correct usage of spices to correctly cook those mainstays of Javanese cuisine such as Sataj - real spelling! - Ayam Tjilatjap and Brongkos Bringhardjo and especially Nasi Brijani whose taste reflected more a mild northern English take-away rather than the proud sub-continental mainstay it is supposed to be.

Service was quick, friendly and efficient. This despite the fact that we came as three families inclusive of three loud and messy (and delightful) two year olds. All mains and desserts arrived at their proper times. A pleasant rarity, this good service in stand-alone restaurants here in Yogya.

The house itself is a delight to dine in. Reimpressions of 1920s and 30s advertising on the walls. Comfortable furniture and magazines and books, mostly in Indonesian, for those that want to have a quiet moment of escapism in the hustle and bustle of Yogya while sipping on one of the many cool drinks which really is the forte of this establishment.

For a quiet comfort drink and mildly seasoned comfort food while reading a book or magazine, this really is the place.

“Close to the hotel, price is good”
Reviewed October 19, 2013

The price is cheap but the food is ok ( not a super nice but not bad either). Try the original vendor if you want a nicer food ( e.g go to the street place for bakmi jawa)
