We've been to Milas two times on our 4-day visit to Jogja. My daughter (10 y.o.) was at the beginning sceptical of the place as her fall back choice in many restaurants when we are travelling abroad is chicken nuggets. However, she loved the place so much that she was offended when we did not go there on our third night, when we decided to try something new (actually, Kesuma that was also great).
We really liked not only the food but also the laid back atmosphere, with people sleeping on bamboo mats, long-haired girls practicing massage techniques on each other, backpakers playing cards, guest from all over the world having fervent, friendly discussions in many different languages etc. The beautiful garden setting and the library made us stay and enjoy our delicious food for hours.
We've tried many of the dishes. Our favourite was slightly spicy aubergine with tempe, but we also loved grilled tofu with sweet and sour vegetables, Indonesian salad with fresh coconut and homemade pasta from the kids menu (my daugther's favourite was the one with tomatoes: deliciously fresh tomatoes and local parmesan cheese). We also enjoyed desserts very much (chocolate cup was my daughter's favourite and we really liked bintang pisang - grilled banana with ice cream and strawberry sauce). If you are a fan of sweet, thick coffee you really must try Milas kopi with coconut milk - it was incredibly good. Also, their herbal drinks are a must - ask for chilled option.
You could really taste that the food was not enhanced with any artificial ingredients - it's light, not greasy, delicious in a fresh and home-like way that these days you can hardly ever experience when dining out. Also, it's very reasonably priced - for a real feast for 3 people, with coffees, fancy drinks and desserts we paid something like 20-25 USD.
Things to keep in mind is that the are open until 9 pm only (although one night we left at 9.30 and the restaurant was still full but maybe the last order is at 9) and that the toilet is only a squat one which was a little bit discouraging for our daughter at the beginning and younger children might need some assistance when using it (it has no built-in flush etc.).
Overall, fantastic experience to be remembered.
