“Cozy place to sleep, rest & eat”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed May 7, 2013

The memorable things in this hotel were the bed & many food varieties for buffet breakfast. The softness of the bed was so excellent that my usual-backpain-after-sleep became none. However, I noticed a stain on the left side of the bed sheet when I tried to know what brand of bed the hotel was using. The breakfast offered international buffet, from Western, Japanese, Chinese, Javanese cuisines till "jamu" - traditional herbal drinks which I hadn't encountered in other local hotel I've stayed. The lobby and the lift corridors smelled nice.

The staff are very attentive and friendly. We enjoy the vanilla sky bar upstairs for drinks at night. The breakfast has great variety and delicious. Room service is very prompt. The spa is a hidden jewel, excellent massages and treatments with trained therapist.
The room is magnificent. The hotel is very new and the modern decor is excellent. Definitely five stars.
Location is across the street from a small supermarket and a traffic light away from a mall. Lots of fabric shops next door. A 10min taxi ride away to malioboro street but not an issue. We enjoy our stay very much. Kudos to the hard work and efficiency of the reception staff.

I visited this hotel in April 2013. It is quite small and its presentation in all available web pages is very pretty. The more disappointed I have got after my arrival. I was warmly welcomed at the main entrance by the doorman, but also by incredible smell that reminded me air fresheners in public restrooms. This smells stretches the entire reception area and lobby. Rooms are nice, but do not meet the quality and comfort of a 5-star hotel. This hotel has a small pool (with no possibility to take a sunbath), a small spa and quite a large restaurant. Service, food and drinks are totally overpriced, note that you will pay for a glass of very cheap supermarket wine min. 15 USD; the staff is not well trained. I returned my meals several times, since its quality did not meet the sanitary requirements. It highlight of the whole building should be a rooftop bar with the live music, which, however, disturbs with its volume the guests of the hotel who already want to sleep. If you need a taxi, you have to demand that someone will organise it for you. In the lobby area you can find a travel agent, who really does not offer anything except a car with driver, anything else is not possible and a hotel shop, which re-sells post cards and stamps for double price.
I travel a lot, mainly in Southeast Asia, but this hotel does not deserve even 3 stars, I consider it a very strange attempt to operate 5-star hotel the low cost way. I cannot recommend this hotel to anyone who is used to a high standard and top quality service.

It has a doorman, a restaurant, an exercise room (small) a pool and a small spa, but this is not a 5-star hotel. The room size was average, the bathroom was small, but the bed (king) and pillows were extremely comfortable. Two bottles of water were provided free of charge, but that wasn't enough as you can't drink the water or use it to brush your teeth.

The property has only been open a year, but is showing it's wear. For example, the carpet in the room was poorly stained and dirty, the decorative throw on the bed stained, and the bathroom caulking a bit dirty. Wireless is provided in the room free of charge, but the signal was poor and most often, I sat in the lobby to connect. Any issues were raised directly with the front desk staff, and while they tried to help, many things just went unfixed.

There is no concierge, and unless you speak Javanese or Indonesian, it was very difficult to get information on planning day tours, get questions answered, etc. A question asked of three different people resulted in 3 different answers, not the service you expect from a high end hotel. There is a travel company located in the hotel, who I used as my concierge, and booked a few trips through, but they were expensive. One of the hotel bellman, also came to my rescue and hired me a car for 1/2 the price the travel agency charged.

I tried all three meals (breakfast, lunch, dinner) at the restaurant. Breakfast included a buffet to meet the needs of Indonesian, American/Australian, Chinese and Japanese travelers. Lunch and dinner were just ok. The food was average, and more expensive (double the price) if you were to order the same thing outside the hotel. I found there were many terrific restaurants to eat at a short pedicab ride from the hotel.

I visited over a holiday weekend, and it was at full occupancy, as they offered a special deal for locals - therefore the clientele was not what I expected for a 5-star hotel

Overall, there was nothing outstanding or terribly poor to mention, but I certainly wouldn't return.

Room Tip: For a quiet room, ask for one away from the club on the 7th floor, as well as away from the main str...

This newly opened hotel (I believe it was opened 2011/2012) is truly a 5 star international standard hotel in a very traditional and laidback city of Indonesia. The hotel rooms are extremely clean, good sized with contemporary interior and excellent medium-firm mattresses. The restaurant downstairs also serves awesome breakfast (they even have Jamu, the Indonesian health drinks and Martabak, the Indonesian pancakes). Besides breakfast, their Indonesian menu for dinner is delectable. I was kind of disappointed at the Vanilla lounge on the top floor because the band was singing somewhat cheesy pop songs and they were serving American food which I was not interested at all. Last but not least, the service level of this hotel's personnel is excellent. I am not sure if it is just the Javanese hospitality ? But the people were so friendly and helpful.

Room Tip: If you pick a twin room, you might still get a double bed, but no fret, they have Californian king s...

On arrival greeted by amazing and helpful staff. Room huge, clean and well appointed. King + size bed with soft pillow top. Gym, pool, sky lounge plus entertainment. A definite recommendation to anyone in Jogja. Only down is the street is full of fabric sellers, but still close to everything!

I don't normally write long winded reviews but in this case I felt compelled too. I am lucky enough to have stayed in some nice Hotels all over the world but on top of the nice facilities in this Hotel there is something very special here that makes this Hotel a very special place to stay. The Staff here are absolutely wonderful! From the professional service provided by Yusep and the beautiful Anggi with the amazing smile, all of the Staff were fantastic! Words can not adequately explain how great the Staff at the Grand Aston are. I truly hope that the Grand Aston rewards and retains its staff as without them, this would be just another nice Hotel. I will only be recommending this Hotel to my Friends and Family and this is definitely where I will be staying on my next visit to Yogyakarta. Thank you to Maria, Yusep, Anggi and all of the Beautiful Staff at the Grand Aston!
