If you are more comfortable staying in a reputable hotel and within walking distance to the busiest shopping street, then you won't go too wrong with Ibis Styles Yogyakarta. It is located within 15 minutes' walk from Jalan Malioboro. I think the other international brands are quite far away.
Service staff were friendly, Room was relatively clean and spacious. There were toothbrush and toothpaste which was a welcoming sign. There were some stains in the sink area but I could live with it. Hot water was intermittent. Water also tended to flow out of the shower area. My room wasn't equipped with a safe. The kettle was faulty. Sound proofing wasn't that fantastic, so you could hear the next room talking. The hotel is among the tallest building so the view was unblocked. I was staying on the 6th floor, and the 7th floor was the pool area. Think they have some live performance at night and we could hear the music from our room. The hotel is also situated near the mosque so you could hear the prayers at regular timings.
But i'm not complaining.Food at the restaurant was nice. There was a change in menu for the breakfast daily, and dinner was delicious in case you can't decide on a dinner place. Will definitely go back to Ibis Styles if I'm visiting Yogyakarta.

Room Tip: May not want to stay on the 6th floor if you are worried about the music from the roof top party.

The pool and bar on the rooftop is the main reason I pick this one. And yeah, the view up there rocks, especially in duck or dawn. If you're lucky with dawn, you will find great view of Merapi Mt. in the north. Located in the most touristy area of Malioboro, this hotel is a block away from the busiest shopping street, exotic culinary stands, batik market, etc. Bedroom was rather small (as budget hotel) but meet the price. Friendly and helpful staffs, great menu of breakfast, clean and tidy. Want a nightlife, just got to 7th floor.

Btw, Ibis is not a name in colorful style hotel chain, but they play with it. That was this hotel about. If you don't like this one, its sister just a block away on Malioboro street, The Ibis Yogya.

This was our starting point in a two week trip through indonesia with my wife. We were impressed about the quality, cleanliness and helpful staff of that ibis. It got only confirmed along the rest of our trip that you can't get better value for the money in indonesia, not to say the location is ideal, right next to malioboro, and very close to both train station and bus to airport or prambanan (mind bus costs 3000 idr vs. 80 to 90.000 you would pay for another transportation. On the top of that, breakfast buffet was very rich in both Indonesian or European options and everything we tried was very tasty.

The hotel itself has slightly larger rooms than the Ibis Malioboro nearby. They decor is somewhat funky, but it is ok. It is located close to Sosrowijaya Street with all its restaurants and is walkable to the train station (if you don't have huge bags). Malioboro is just at the end of the street. The staff are super friendly and helpful. The breakfast in the morning is standard fare for Indonesia. It has a lovely small pool on the roof with great views out over Yogya. The only reason I didn't give it 5 out of 5 is that there is a mosque very nearby and you really hear it if your room is facing that side. The hotel cannot do anything about this, but if you want to sleep in, in the mornings then...take it into consideration. It is very loud and you hear it in the room. Overall this is a great hotel and I recommend it highly.

This hotel was fantastic for the price. The staff was very friendly and accommodating. One day we returned late from an early morning excursion and missed the complimentary breakfast (that ends at 10am I believe), and the restaurant staff arranged a breakfast for us anyway. The rooftop bar was beautiful, although service there was slow. Overall we had a wonderful stay, and I would definitely reccommend this place!
