For $18 a night, Via Via is a steal of a guesthouse in Jogja. The guesthouse itself is very basic, but excellent given the prices they charge. I stayed in the Sumatera room with AC and a shared bathroom. It was nothing more than a room with a bed, but the sheets were clean and the bed comfortable. The guesthouse is small, with a kitchen in the back to cook your own food if you want, and a few tables in a "garden" area for sitting. The staff at Via Via are the main treat, as they are incredibly fun, funny, and helpful.
Do note that Via Via is located somewhat south of the main Maliboro street area that everyone visits at least once when in Jogja, but it is only a 15,000 rupiah ride to get there and staying there didn't seem to offer anything that also couldn't be found on the street on which Via Via is located.
Tip: Book ahead online using Via Via's website. They promptly and consistently reply to your emails and the guesthouse was full the entire time I was there.More
