“Good food, so-so setting”
Reviewed September 24, 2013 via mobile

We visited the Royal Garden a few days during our 3 day stay in Yogya and found the food excellent. While the service is indifferent at best, the beers are ice cold! Not the best setting and decor in the world but very good value for money.

“Don't believe the poor reviews, the food is great!”
Reviewed June 24, 2013

I agree with tj_sydney about this place being one of the very few restaurants that got food worth eating in Jogja, because basically apart from some good Western/fusion restaurants owned by expats you don't really have many other choices in this city. The menu is mostly Indonesian-Chinese-food based though it has some Indonesian/Javanese fuse in it, and they are all VERY GOOD, well-prepared, properly cooked with a range of vegetables+meat-poultry selections, also for vegetarians like their scrumptious silken tofu with blackbean sauce. Yes it a bit takes time for your order to get ready but it's so worth it. It's near the Palace, and very easy to find. I think the murky atmosphere and interior that makes it a bit underrated. But seriously, it's a very good choice by the end of the day after you visit some touristy places and want to have some really excellent set of Asian-flavored meals.

“Finally! Food worth the eating in Yogya!”
Reviewed March 30, 2012

Came to the Royal (in a corner of the square in front of the Kraton) after 3 days of pretty much despairing of finding anything enjoyable to eat in this friendly town. The pretty courtyard was being set up for a function, so our smiling waitress ushered us into a small and comfortable dining room. As seems the norm in Yogya, 90% of the menu is deep fried. However, there are still plenty of other choices. After the complimentary appetisers _ delicious tiny tofu cubes in a delicate dressing, and fresh pickled vegetable morsels - we had the chef's own preparation of tofu - silken, just crisped, and bathed in a beautifully balanced satay-style sauce - green beans in a Szechuan style garnish and a delicious seafood and vegetable, coconut milk curry.
Service was prompt, smiling and unobtrusive, prices similar to backpacker joints like Via Via but a whole other level of presentation and cuisine.

“Yummy, food but place and service could be better”
Reviewed February 27, 2012

The food was very delicious and they came in LARGE portion, however it took a while for them to be cooked, we had to wait for almost 30 minutes and they could improve their lighting - use soft yellow lights rather than white fluorescent ones.

“OK, but not at all a "Royal Dining Experience"”
Reviewed August 13, 2010

Based on earlier positive recommendations on TA, we tried the restaurant today for lunch. We felt rather disappointed.
The interior and decoration (including rooms, tables and tableware) are not in line with their slogan "the Royal Dining Experience".
The kind young waitress spoke virtually no English.
The toilets were inadequate: there was one only for men and one only for women for what is a rather large restaurant, with an estimated capacity of over 100 (outside and inside), and these were in bad condition and not clean.
Fortunately, the food was good, though not great. In addtion, the 3 different main courses for our table arrived at different times, minutes apart.
All in all, an OK place very close to the Sultan's Palace (in fact on the opposite corner of the square in front of the palace), but no recommendation from me.
